Line-Haul Gearing Recommendations.A major factor in optimizing performance and fueleconomy is vehicle gearing. Follow these simplerecommendations to ensure gearing is properly selected.

On-highway 80,000 lb (36,287 kg) or less:

■ For maximum fuel economy or for vehicles intending tocruise greater than 65 mph, gear for an engine speedof 1450 rpm at the 65-mph checkpoint.

■ In operations where fuel economy is not a primaryconcern or cruise speeds are typically below 65 mph,gear for an engine speed of 1550 rpm at the 65-mphcheckpoint.

■ Gearing combinations that produce an engine speedless than 1400 rpm at the vehicle’s intended cruisespeed should be avoided.

The formula for determining engine speed (rpm) at the65-mph checkpoint for a selected gearing combination is:
