Even before he was officially commissioned by Congress, Pulaski joined the American Army as a volunteer. At Brandywine, in 1777, he led a daring attack against the British, thereby saving the re- treating American Army. At the insistence of General George Wash- ington, Pulaski was made a Brigadier Gen- eral and the first Commander of the American Cavalry. He established the Pulaski Legion, a corps of Freshmen, German Hes- sians, and Poles, who were instrumental in saving the City of Charleston, South Caro- lina, from British occu- pation in 1779. Fines for violations are $35 for vehicles travling 6-10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit while in a safety zone, and $100 for vehicles traveling 11 or more miles over the posted speed limit. The City plans to equip Children’s Safety zones around parks and schools with ASE cam- eras in an effort to increase safety and reduce speeding. Any rev- enue generate by the pro- gram is to be invested in critical safety initiatives including after-school, anti-violence and jobs programs. The enforcement hours will be limited from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in safety zones around schools on school days (Monday through Friday); 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.: 20 mph speed limit when children are present; 30 mph speed limit when no children are present 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Enforcement around parks will be limited to only those hours parks are open (typically 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week) with a 30 mph speed limit. ___________________ Illinois State U. The Winter OlympicsBy Dr. R. Pletsch The Olympics are hereand you can't get awayfrom them. Why not usethis to expand our stu-dents' knowledge. It canbe history, art, math, ge-ography, language arts, science, and almost any-thing else, for any grade. One of the easiest waysis to have art projectswith an infinite amount ofpossibilities. What arethose circles for? What isa biathlon? Math can befiguring out differences intimes and scores. Geogra-phy is also simple, draw acountry or Sochi. I had an 8th grader atNathan Davis ask "howcan people watch theOlympics on TV when theskaters and skiers don'teven face each other. Youhave to trust the clocks. IfI were the judge, theAmericans would wineverything." -- great startfor discussions, moralityvs. reality. Do judgescheat? Today with access tothe internet, the studentscan look up everything. Ihad a girl notice at thelast Olympics that the en-tire Italian men's hockeyteam were Americans -- agreat observation and dis-cussion point. Maybe theycan do a computer searchto find out just how manycountries American citi-

DR. R.J. PLETSCHzens represent. Othersubjects for upper andmiddle grades include:When did the first WinterOlympics take place? Whydid the USA boycott the1980 Summer Olympicsand have other countriestaken similar actions? Why not talk about the1936 games in Nazi Ger-many when Jessie Owenswas the hero, great forBlack History Month. Thestudents may also lookinto the terrorist attack atthe 1972 Olympics andhow members of the Is-raeli wrestling team werekilled and what their fam-ilies must have felt watch-ing it on TV. I had a student tell meafter the Miracle on Ice inthe 1980 Winter games,"Now I know I am anAmerican. I was so happyI cried." The backgroundof the Iranian hostage sit-uation is lost to thoseunder 50, but a great re-search project. The tearsit brings to me todaymakes it my favoriteOlympic moment. The other thing thatcould bring a great discus-sion, "What is curling?" ___________________
