BASLER ELECTRIC, BOX 269, HIGHLAND, IL 62249 PHONE 618/654-2341 FAX 618/654-2351 INTRODUCTION The Energy Storage Device ESD 202 is used where a station battery source is not available to provide circuit breaker trip power. The ESD 202 converts ac bus voltage to dc and stores enough energy to trip the circuit breaker (191 Vdc @ 9.1 Joules) one time for 12 seconds after ac power has been interrupted. WARNING! To prevent personal injury or equipment damage, only qualified technicians or operators should install, operate, or service this device. ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS Output Power: 191-339 Vdc 9.1 Joules minimum at 191 Vdc 21.6 Joules minimum at 295 Vdc 24.2 Joules minimum at 311 Vdc 28.7 Joules minimum at 339 Vdc There will be at least 9.1 Joules at 191 Vdc, 12 seconds after removal of ac input voltage. Power Input: Operating range: 208 to 240 V +10%, Single phase, 50/60 Hz, Burden 10.0 VA maximum. Power Dissipation: 2.0 Watts maximum continuous. PHYSICAL SPECIFICATIONS Operating Temperature: -25° C (-13° F) to +65° C (+149° F). Storage Temperature: -40° C (-40° F) to +85° C (+185° F). Vibration: Withstands 2 Gs at 10 to 200 Hz in each of three mutually perpendicular axes. Shock: Withstands 15 Gs in each of three mutually perpendicular axes. Dimensions Refer to the Outline Drawing. Weight: 0.55 lb. (0.25 kg) Net. Meets CSA C22.2, Number 14, “Industrial Control Equipment.” Meets UL 508, “Industrial Control Equipment.” THEORY OF OPERATION (Refer to the Functional Block Diagram) Power input to the ESD 202 is 240 Vac. This input is rectified and used to charge the output capacitor (C1) to approximately 340 Vdc. As long as the ac input is applied, C1 continues to be charged in this manner. The capacitor will hold a charge of at least 9.1 Joules at 191 Vdc for at least 12 seconds after the ac power is removed from the input. HUMAN-MACHINE INTERFACE The LED DS1 indicates that the ESD 202 is operationally ready. DS1 illuminates when the capacitor has the minimum charge of 150 Vdc at 5.6 Joules The LED does not indicate whether or not the ac input is being applied. INTERCONNECTION The device should be connected as shown in the Interconnection Diagram. Each breaker should be provided with its own ESD 202. The use of a single ESD 202 to provide a tripping output for more than one breaker (or other device) is not recommended. Such configurations should only be considered when it can be demonstrated, through independent testing, that combinations of breakers (or devices) can be reliably operated from a single ESD 202. OPERATION When the ESD 202 is properly interconnected and after 240 Vac input power has been applied, the unit is operationally ready. The illumination of the LED indicates that the unit is charged and ready. No adjustments of any type should be necessary. NOTE Read DISCHARGING paragraph before working on unit. DISCHARGING Since more than 300 Vdc can be present on the ESD 202 output terminals, it is advisable to discharge the storage capacitors if the unit is to be worked on for any reason. The following procedure can be used for discharging the storage capacitor. CAUTION Lethal voltages are present. Qualified persons should install, operate or service this device. 1. Obtain a 470 ohm, 5 watt wirewound resistor. 2. Connect a few inches of 14 AWG, 600 V, insulated wire to each end of the resistor. 3. Remove ac power input from terminals 1 and 4. 4. To discharge the capacitors, CAREFULLY touch one wire to Terminal #3 and the other wire to Terminal #4. Hold the wires on the terminals for at least 5 seconds. 5. Insure that the capacitors are discharged by connecting a dc Voltmeter across terminals 4(-) and 3(+). REPAIRS The ESD 202 is not field repairable. Should the device require repairs, return it to the factory for service. FIELD SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT The ESD 202 has been completely checked at the factory. If for any reason the unit fails to operate properly, it should be returned to the factory for repair and/or replacement. CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION OF BASLER ELECTRIC COMPANY, HIGHLAND, IL.
