ARE YOU LISTENING OR JUST HEARING?

Dr. S CHAKRABORTY...................................................

We are given two ears andone mouth for a reason. Godknew listening is twice ashard as speaking.

Right from birth todeath, the first and most usedskill is listening but we alwaystake it for granted. We takecoaching for speaking, stagemannerism, to be grammati-cally correct and all, with justone assumption that our au-dience is absolutely attentiveand truly listening us. Is it so?With only 2% of people be-ing taught listening as a skill, its too much of a ask with a

mobile in hand.So what exactly is

true/emphatic listening?Soas the chinese symbol sug-gests, listening not only needsears but alsoundivided attention along withconnecting with the heart ofspeaker while making eyecontact.

For most people lis-tening means waiting for yourturn to speak or preparing foryour next question. Due to this70% of all communication aremisunderstood, misinter-preted, distorted or not heardat all.

True listening de-pends on three skills; atten-tion , attitude and adjustment. It is a active process and oneneeds to train oneself. Ourbrain inherently thinks fourtime faster than we canspeak. We speak at 200- 300words per minute but canthink at 1000 – 1200 wordsper minute. So it gives usenough free time as a listener, for the mind to wander and

go away from the topic. Bydefault our attention will behard to focus because of thisextra time. We need to usethis time to listen emphaticallyby analyzing the content oftalk, feelings of the speaker, looking for non verbal cues toknow whether he meanswhat he is saying, refrain our-self from completing the sen-tence of speaker and finallyto summarize or reflect backwhat he said.

Why listening is im-portant?It is our primary communica-tion activity. Our listening hab-its are not the result of train-ing but rather due to the lackof it. It is the most importantskill that a employer searchesbefore hiring and a patientdesperately seeks before con-sulting a doctor.

Why listening ishard? We are always pre occupiedwith the past or future, maynot like the speaker or hismannerism, our own anxiety/

stress before coming to listenor often having a idea in mindwhat the person ‘ should do’,makes it hard to listen to thatpersons point of view.

Finally a good lis-tener tries to understand thor-

oughly what the speaker istrying to say. In the end hemay disagree sharply butbefore he disagrees, hewants to know exactly whatit is, that he is disagreeingwith.

Sub: Department of Space waives of bandwidth charges payable by BSNL

On one hand telephone services specially Broadband is deteriorating every passing day,on the other hand BSNL resorted to increase in rentals, call charges, without eveninforming the captive customers. Not only the charges have been increased, even thenumber of free calls, sms and data usage has been reduced drastically. Is it not addinginsult to injury! I hope after the BSNL gets bandwidth waiver, it would pass some of thebenefits to its customers.

EDITORIAL.....Buy a neta, get one free

When he got married to an In-dian, Hollywood film directorDavid Lean remarked that hehad not only acquired a wife butan entire family of her relativesas well. If matrimony Indian-styleis a family business, so to speak, politics Indian-style is equally ifnot more so. As if to underscorethe point Congress candidatefrom Haridwar, Renuka Rawat, who is married to the chief min-ister of Uttarakhand, HarishRawat, has reportedly launcheda 'Double ka Dum' poll campaignwhich effectively says 'Vote forme, get CM free'.

Renuka has confessedthat she has borrowed her doubledhamaka idea from televisionadvertisements which try to lurecustomers with what in the tradeare known as 'bogofs', an acro-nym which stands for 'buy one,get one free'. Marketing punditsmight ponder whether a salesstrategy that is appropriate for thepromotion of consumer durablesis equally suitable for selling a po-litical candidacy. However, in theabsence of the Election Commis-sion raising an objection to the'freebie' offer of a chief minister,Renuka's sales pitch might wellwoo voters on the look-out forfamily-pack bargains and combodeals. The motto of 'family first'has long been a pivot of the In-dian political scene, which hasoften been described as a son-rise industry. However, on theegalitarian principle of equal op-portunity, what might be called'dine-astic rule'— in which mem-

bers of the family dine togetheron the loaves and fishes of pub-lic office — has been enlargedto accommodate not only sonsbut sons-in-law and daughters aswell.

BJP's prime ministerialhopeful, Narendra Modi, invitedcomment on this score when hedescribed the Congress as theRSVP party, the initials standingnot for the convent ionalRespondez S'il Vous Plait but forRahul, Sonia, Vadra andPriyanka. Exhorting people notto vote for a 'ma-beta'organisation, the Gujarat CMcommented that along with its'jijaji' the Congress party's jig isalso up.

However, Modi's earlierclaim that he was less likely thanothers to succumb to the temp-tation of graft and corruption be-cause he had no family membersto support has backfired on himwith the revelation that he does, after all, have a wife whom hehas for all these years kept un-der wraps in what can only bedescribed as an excess of hus-bandly modesty. Making politi-cal capital of NaMo's newly dis-closed marital status Congress inturn has called for bestowal of theBharat Ratna on Mrs Modi, whohas been projected as the idealexample of the self-sacrificing In-dian wife. Whatever the resultsof the elections are, one thing iscertain. FDI in retail might be out,but in politics it'll be a permanentfixture: Family Dedicatedly In-volved.
