CELEBRATING 85 YEARS

As we look to the past and to all that has shaped the Loreto that we are today, we say “Thank You”. “Thank you” to the sisters most especially and to all those loyal supporters who have gone before us to help create this wonderful school community; a community so richly and proudly steeped in the ethos and tradition of Mary Ward.

The generosity of past generations has provided for us in ways beyond measure and we acknowledge this with truly grateful hearts.

At this significant time in our history, when we celebrate 85 wonderful years, we look not only to our past but also to the excitement of our future.

With the arrival of Year 7’s in 2015, comes a unique opportunity to renew, reshape and redefine our campus in ways that will not only accommodate the additional students and staff but will also meet the learning needs of Loreto students well into the future.

The Facilities Masterplan that has been developed by Thomson Adsett sets a blueprint for capital development ‘beyond today’. This Masterplan will both excite and challenge us. Necessarily it has a number of key elements which, will be staged and achieved over time. With the support of the whole community, these future developments will not only enhance, remodel and refurbish the existing amenities, they will also provide new and important additions.

I very much look forward to sharing these plans with you as part of 85 Years’ Celebrations. An Information Evening will thus be held on 17 June. This evening is open to all interested members of the community.

(PS: Those of you attending the Gala Ball will enjoy a special sneak preview of the Masterplan launch . . . so, if you haven’t yet booked your tickets, it’s definitely not too late to join us).

8. Membership of any Loreto College Coorparoo Association or association bodies, whether executive, or as a committee member, or otherwise, will not preclude participation in this raffle.

9. Any disputes or disagreements arising from the holding of the College Fee Raffle will ultimately be determined by the School Council. Once Council has made its determination, no other correspondence will be entered into.

Art Department News Year Nine has continued their response to the environment with a photographic excursion to the City Botanical Gardens to collect images to be developed into a painted response. In the meantime their Term One pots have dried and been bisque and glaze fired. These pots were designed with form and surface being inspired by nature. Some of their artwork

Blazer Orders

Blazer orders have now arrived and are awaiting pick up from the uniform shop. Year 8 students have been given new dates and times to pick these up. Hopefully all Year 8 students will have their blazers by the end of day on Wednesday. Please make sure that blazers are clearly marked with your daughter’s name as we have so many blazers that end up in

Debating News The results of round three of the QDU competition are shown below.

With one more debate to go in the Preliminary Rounds, Loreto has five teams who could still qualify for the Finals Rounds.

These are our 8.1, 8.2, 9.1, 10.1 and 11.1 teams. Many of these teams must win Round 4 to qualify, however, we

Drama Department News On Tuesday night Drama students will be attending a performance of Mother Courage and her Children at The Playhouse Theatre, Southbank. The performance begins at 6.30 and concludes at 9.10. Bertolt Brecht is an important playwright as his plays caused the viewer to take a critical view of the action on stage.

In the September holidays (22 – 27 September), Artslink Queensland are offering the MAD Camp2013 at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School. The Curvasis Fund has generously donated $12,000 to the organisation which subsidises the cost of the Camp, reducing it by $200 so that enrolment costs only $395. Students will learn skills relating to Drama or Dance, attend Masterclasses, attend a live performance and work towards a performance piece for the Friday night. Music News Congratulations - To the members of the Clarinet Ensemble and their conductor, Ms Melissa Cox, on their recent performance at St Elizabeth’s Catholic Primary School. The girls were excellent ambassadors for the College and we have received glowing feedback on their playing, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the younger students.

Rehearsals During Exam Block - There have been some changes to rehearsals over the following two weeks (Weeks 8 & 9) so that students can focus on their exams. Please carefully note the schedule published in this newsletter so that you can meet all your commitments. Students should also be aware that all rehearsals will run as normal in Week 10 (the final week of term), including Percussion Ensemble 2, Exit Stage Left and Concert Band 2 before and after school on the Friday, Athletics Day.

Loreto Music Festival - Congratulations to all students who entered the 2013 Loreto Music Festival and a special congratulations to all girls selected to perform at the Finals Concert (a complete list is now available both in this newsletter and on the Music Noticeboard). Could all these finalists please check the list on the Noticeboard and make sure they have submitted a copy of their music and accompanist’s music to Mrs Carr. All finalists who are using the College provided accompanist will have rehearsals scheduled during the day/afternoons of Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 June. A schedule for these rehearsals will be published as soon as practical.

QCMF - Don’t forget that all Loreto Ensembles (except Beginner Brass Ensemble and the String Quartet) will be performing at the Catholic Colleges Music Festival between Thursday 15 and Sunday 18 August. We will not have exact times for these performances until the Festival Schedule is released at the start of Term Three. However, this is one of our three main performance opportunities for the year and the only Adjudicated Festival that most groups enter so it is our expectation that all students will be available for the QCMF weekend.

Private Tuition – All parents are reminded that this Friday 31 May is the final day for withdrawing from Private Music Tuition for next term. Please notify your teacher and the Coordinator of Music via email ([email protected]) or in writing by this Friday so that tutors can organise their teaching loads and timetables for Term Three.

World’s Biggest Orchestra – During the July holidays, Australian Jazz Icon James Morrison will be organising a Guinness Book of Records world record attempt at forming (and actually playing music with) both the World’s Biggest Orchestra (6500 musicians) and the World’s Largest Trumpet Section (1200 musicians)! The events will be held on Saturday 13 July at 12.00 pm in King George Square (Trumpet) and 3 pm in Suncorp Stadium (Orchestra). There is a $15 registration fee and all the information and music can be found at this website: http://www.worldsbiggestorchestra.com. If enough students are interested, then we will organise a Loreto group to enter – let us know if you want to be part of this massive event by

Friendship Survey

Loreto College has been asked to participate in a research project on how adolescents make friends in terms of their needs and decision processes, and how this affects their self-esteem. Year 8 students will receive an information letter and consent forms for both parents and students this Wednesday and are asked to return the consent forms by Friday 31 May. The half hour survey will be administered on Wednesday 12 June at 1.30pm. There is no compulsion to participate, but this research will eventually inform support programs for adolescents around this very complex and significant issue and so assist young people in the future.

Marist Dancing

Last Tuesday evening 65 Year 10 Loreto Students attended the final dance of Marist Dancing at Riverside Receptions,

New Farm. The students were dressed beautifully and had a wonderful night dancing and enjoying the company of the

Marist boys. Each school awarded a prize to the student who displayed improved skills and enthusiasm on the night.

Grea Effeney received the prize for Loreto College. The attending teachers from all schools commented on the

magnificent way the students conducted themselves and our students should be duly proud of the way they represented

the College at this event. We look forward to continuing this long-standing tradition next year.

P & F News P & F Meeting

The P & F will hold its next meeting (and last for two months) next Tuesday 4 June in room 605 on the bottom floor of the

Gonzaga Barry Building at 7.30pm. If you attend you can expect to hear, among other things, an update on how the funds

you contribute to the P&F levy are being spent this year: an ‘evacuation chair’ for students with limited mobility, a

dishwasher for Mary Ward Centre (MWC), an upgrade of the drama room air-conditioning and a defibrillator. Funds raised

last year are being spent on a drop-curtain for the MWC, which will be installed during the June school holidays. You will

also hear a report on the Great Gatsby Gala Ball being held on Saturday.

Sports Support Group Meeting

The Sports Support Group will hold its next meeting tonight in the same room. On the agenda is fundraising to install solar heating for the swimming pool and entering Loreto Netball teams in a club competition next year.

Year 12 Parent Dinner The countdown is on! Once the girls immerse themselves in the glitz and glamour that is the Year 12 Formal, the parents will have the opportunity to indulge in some fun of their own. All Year 12 parents are invited to attend the popular Parent Dinner on Saturday 13 July, 8.15pm at Tattersall’s Club, $60pp. The night will follow the Formal pre-dinner drinks at the Hilton.

The evening promises to deliver a glamorous night of celebration with fine food and fabulous company. Dinner will include a two course alternate drop menu, tea and coffee (cash bar only). The question on everyone’s lips… What will you be wearing? Ladies dress requirements are smart/business attire and the men are to wear a minimum of a long sleeved shirt, buttoned at the cuff and tucked into tailored pants, accompanied with enclosed shoes (sorry guys, no denim!). Discounted parking vouchers will also be available on request throughout the night.

Sports Department News BSGSA Sport

Soccer Unfortunately last week all the games were washed out. Let’s hope this week has a better outcome!

This Week’s Draw - Round 3 Open A, Open C and Junior A teams play at home and the Junior C team plays away.

Junior C team play St Rita’s College at North Side Sports Field.

If students are being picked up from Indooroopilly, students must provide a signed note to Mr Jones, no later than the

morning of the fixture. The away teams will return home @ 5:30-5:45pm depending on the traffic. The Open A and Open C

teams both play Mt Alvernia while the Junior A team plays Lourdes Hill at Annerley Soccer Club, 98 Victoria Terrace,

Annerley. The home games will finish at 5:00pm and students need to be picked up at the venue. Students are

CSGSA Cross Country Meet Will be held on Friday 31 May at Limestone Park Ipswich. The girls must be at the College by 6.50am to meet Mrs

Stevens. The girls have worked very hard this season and we wish them all the best on Friday. A special thankyou to Clare

Geraghty and Andrew Lulham for their professional coaching and commitment to the team. There will be a Cross Country

breakfast on Wednesday 29 May at 7.00am. There will be no training on Wednesday or Thursday.

Notices / Bulletins . “Brissie to the Bay” Bike Ride - Fundraising for MS Australia Young On Sunday 23 June I will be riding 50 km in the 2013 “Brissie to the Bay” bike ride to support people living with Multiple Sclerosis. I am lucky enough to be able to take part in this ride, however many people with MS cannot even walk, let alone enjoy riding a bike. I have committed to raise $2500 to make my personal contribution to fight MS. Please help support my fundraising efforts by sponsoring my ride. 2013 Faber Lecture by Fr Michael Kelly SJ

Pope Francis is the first Jesuit to be elected Pope. In the weeks after his election, many questions have been asked about Jesuits and their spirituality; one might be – how has Ignatian Spirituality influenced our new Pope? Ignatian spirituality is based on the life and teachings of St Ignatius Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. Father Michael Kelly SJ is based in Bangkok, where he leads UCA News, a multi-lingual and multi-media organization re-porting news and information across the region in six languages. Michael will present this lecture on behalf of the Faber Centre of Ignatian Spirituality.

Health & Well-Being Council RECIPE OF THE MONTH by Hannah Reece

This Term the Health and Well-Being Council are aiming to promote healthier snacking by providing you with recipes for delicious and more nutritious snacks. This is the tasty recipe is great for the lunch box. Enjoy!

CHIA, DATE & WALNUT BALLS Makes approximately 24

Ingredients: ¾ cups rolled oats ½ cup walnut halves ¼ cup desiccated coconut 2 tablespoons white or black chia seeds (optional) ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted 1 tsp natural vanilla extract 1 ½ cups pitted dried dates, chopped Extra desiccated coconut for rolling

Method

Soak the chopped dates in boiling water for 1 minute. Drain.

Place the oats, walnuts, coconut, chia seeds, cinnamon, cocoa powder and vanilla extract in a food processor

and process until finely chopped.

With the motor running, start adding the dates a few pieces at a time, processing until you’ve used all the dates

and the mixture begins to come together. Now bring it together by hand, adding 1-2 teaspoons of cold water if

necessary

Roll the mixture into bite-sized balls and roll in coconut.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

These treats contain no butter, sugar or flour and they are a good source of fibre. If you have any healthy
