Energy, Infrastructure, and Manufacturing Driving Automation Marketin IndonesiaBy: Bob Gill

Increasing demands for energy, infrastructure, and manufactured goods will drive the automation technology market in Indonesia as Southeast Asia’s largest economy continues to expand. The automation products, systems and services market is expected to grow strongly over the forecast period (2013-2018), according to a new ARC Advisory Group study.

Aside from 250 million people, Indonesia’s favorable demographics include a young and still-growing population and a rapidly rising middle class. The country also has an abundance of natural resources, including coal, copper, gold, nickel, tin, oil, gas, and palm oil. GDP is predicted to increase by a factor of 10 over the next 15 years to exceed $9 tillion, making Indonesia one of the world’s biggest economies come 2030.

“Consumer-based manufacturing industries such as automotive, food & beverage, and household

and personal care are all investing heavily to boost production capacity and meet demands for products previously out of reach of most Indonesians,” said ARC Southeast Asia General Manager Bob Gill, co-author of ARC’s new “Automation Systems Market Outlook for Indonesia” “The new and upgraded plants require modern automation technology to ensure reliable, productive, safe, and secure manufacturing.”Indonesia, which seeks to rectify its considerable deficits in energy and shortcomings in infrastructure, offers lucrative opportunities for automation suppliers serving industries such as oil & gas, power, cement, and water & wastewater.

Attracting Automation SuppliersWith an eye toward this increasingly attractive market, automation suppliers are ramping up resources in Indonesia. A third of suppliers surveyed opened offices in the last five years, while those with a longer history are moving beyond Jakarta and Java, notably to Kalimantan and Sumatra. While suppliers

with manufacturing plants and engineering centers are currently in the minority; this is likely to change as product demand accelerates and user needs evolve over the next few years.

Investing in Oil and GasDue to rising domestic demand and previous lackluster investment, this one-time OPEC member now spends billions on imported crude oil, gas, and petrochemicals. However, with active upstream participation by the world’s oil majors, Indonesia is looking to initiate and increase production from a number of recent finds, as well as uncover new sources of oil and gas in remoter areas of the archipelago. Downstream, a slew of multi-billion dollar investment plans have been announced to upgrade refineries and construct several new petrochemical plants over the next several years. Revitalizing InfrastructureDetermined to improve Indonesia’s notoriously low-quality infrastructure to developed-world standards, newly elected president Joko Widodo, announced ambitious plans to build 15 airports, 24 seaports 3,600 km of new roads, and an extra 35,000 MW of installed electricity capacity by 2019.

“For many, the new business-friendly president passed his first test by executing a campaign promise of lowering the level of fuel subsidies, which have long been decried as a huge misallocation of public funds. The billions of dollars in savings are being diverted to infrastructure, education, and health, all which stand to enhance the economy,” notes Bob Gill.

Companies have invested heavily in the development of the programmable logic controller (PLC) in an effort to improve programming tools that reduce engineering time. Engineering or programming tools are increasingly a differentiation criteria for PLCs. Engineering time is a threat to the success of many projects, and an engineering tool can reduce downtime and the effort it takes to maintain the line. It is important to leverage the standard IEC programming languages because there is currently no universal programming tool that can maintain PLCs from various suppliers.

“The capabilities of a PLC for some of the most demanding requirements today require a more rigorous approach to supplier selection. Furthermore, Big Data, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and Industrie 4.0 require automation solutions that can be extended to support these future capabilities,” commented Florian Güldner, the principal author of ARC’s “PLCs and PLC-based PAC Evaluation and Selection Guide”.

Selecting the Right Controller Is Often Not StraightforwardAdvancements in technologies have made the capabilities of the controllers used in the discrete and process industries more comparable. Increasing processing power and networking technologies, along with a lower cost base, enable today’s PLC-based PACs to address many DCS applications, especially if these applications are not at the high-end of the performance spectrum. Purchasers need to evaluate which controller best suits their application; in many cases users may find that PLC-based PACs may offer the best value controller.

Understanding the Needs of the Application Is the Key to a Winning StrategyThe criteria list that is included in this report is the result of ARC’s analysis of the emerging practices of adoption. Often the total solution is complex and functionality involves the combination of an expanded range of capabilities and specific technology. However, as you will see, the criteria is more than just a list of the technical requirements to meet the objectives of successful adoption. While a product’s functions plays a major role, suppliers have specific domain expertise, geographical presence, and knowledge of certain industry dynamics. These must all be evaluated in your supplier and technology selection process.

Sugar plant benefits from integrated processautomation using PROFIBUS

Konya Seker is the largest private sugar producer in Turkey. At the end of 2004, the company put a new sugar factory into operation. The factory is located in Cumra, in the highlands of Middle Anatolia, about 185 miles south of Ankara. The factory can process up to 12,000 tons of sugar beet per day, yielding about 1,500 tons of sugar. The new factory was the largest single project in the European sugar industry at the time.

In the automation of the plant, the task was to achieve two goals that had always been considered incompatible:• On the one hand, a highly modern plant was to be

installed which would impress every engineer and set a new standard for the entire sugar industry.

• On the other hand, demanding economical aspects had to be taken into consideration: The production was to operate more cost-effectively than any other in the industry.

With more than 50 years of experience in the sugar industry, Siemens came with the best recommendations for meeting these seemingly contradictory requirements. On the basis of numerous successfully completed new building projects in the sugar industry, Siemens designed the overall concept in close cooperation with the customer. The concept combines the advantages of Totally Integrated Automation with a uniform automation concept using Profibus as a fieldbus system. The result is an open, efficient, and at the same time cost effective automation solution for the longterm. Simatic PCS 7 was used as the process control system.

Design ConceptAn essential step toward cost optimisation in the automation of the plant was the consistent use of PROFIBUS c o m p o n e n t s for plantwide n e t w o r k i n g .

The process instruments (around 600 including 316 PA devices) are linked to the control system via PROFIBUS. PROFIBUS not only allows the transmission of the pure process signals, but also the transmission of all calibration data from the central engineering system after installation of the device on site. This approach considerably simplifies the engineering requirements: All of the instrumentation was configured by just one project engineer. In addition, PROFIBUS PA (PROFIBUS for Process Automation) transmits the power to the individual devices. Up to 32 measuring instruments can be connected to one line that is supplied by a coupling module, without marshalling distributors or signal conditioning. The field wiring work was therefore limited to an absolute minimum. For measurements such as level, pressure, temperature, and flow, Siemens sensors and transmitters are used, while Sipan analyzers evaluate process parameters such as pH value and conductivity online. All actuators, such as vents, valves, motors, and frequency converters, also communicate with the control system via PROFIBUS.Hence, all field devices of the plant are connected to just one single bus (PROFIBUS) proving the unique capability of PROFIBUS to support perfectly this kind of hybrid plant instrumentation.

The factory’s control technology is based on the Simatic PCS 7 process control system throughout. The PCS 7 servers, the operator systems, and all operating stations are networked by Industrial Ethernet. The main factory of Konya Seker in Konya is connected to the Cumra factory by an intranet link. A management information system (MIS) was installed in Konya and Cumra. It stores all the relevant process and laboratory data and generates all thereporting for the two factories, with extensive real-time reporting online. With the MIS, the company is able to continuouslykeep an eye on the processes, detect critical developments early, and respond to them proactively before there is a total production outage.

ResultThe automation technology implemented at the sugar factory in Cumran provides the technical basis for optimized processes and cost-effective continuous operation of the factory. That became clear already during commissioning, as production was successfully brought up to maximum capacity within just a few weeks from zero to full steam. Easy commissioning, fast and centralized access from the operator, and improved resolution of the measured values have been recognized as important advantages of the PA devices. In close cooperation with the committed teams of the machine manufacturers involved and Konya Seker, Siemens proved that it is possible to reconcile the often conflicting demands of technicians and commercial managers – provided the technology is integrated just as well as the persons involved. That was certainly the case in Cumran.

The global oil and gas industry, once a shining beacon

of growth, has been under a gloomy overcast for nearly

a year now. Oil prices have fallen by approximately 50%

since the summer of 2014, and are affecting everything

from investment and jobs to gasoline prices and consumer

consumption. Nowhere is this dynamic felt more than in

Texas, as it has been one of the champions of the North

American shale revolution.

Of particular concern for companies in the industrial

automation space are the significant contractions in

capital expenditure, ranging from 10% to 40%, announced

by the world’s largest oil and gas companies for 2015.

The Industrial Automation Equipment (IAE) market will

continue to grow (albeit at a contracted rate) in 2015

despite facing some headwinds, mainly in the form of

low oil and commodity prices and weakened demand

from some developing economies. These headwinds will

dampen overall market revenue growth by approximately

1%-2% this year.

Improving global economic growth, particularly in the

United States, European Union (EU), Japan and India, will

continue to support growing sales of IAE products in 2015.

Although slowing growth in China and recessions in Brazil

and Russia will limit this expansion, it won’t be enough

to counterweigh the improving conditions in the other

regions.

It’s true that significantly decreased capital investment

in the oil and gas and other commodity-related sectors

will hurt sales of IAE products into these industries in

2015 and 2016, but this decline will be offset by growth in

other industries such as automotive, food and beverage,

packaging, materials handling and robotics.

For example, the oil and gas industry, which accounted for

approximately 7% of total IAE sales in 2014, is expected

to see an investment decline of about 8% in 2015. This

contraction in capital expenditure will be somewhat

counterbalanced by increased spending in the cement

& glass, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage

and other sectors.

Of the three major IAE product groups, motors and motor

controls will be most hurt by low oil prices as sales into

the oil and gas sector comprised nearly 8% of the total

revenues for these product categories in 2014. Automation

equipment will not suffer as much, with the exception of

process controllers, which derived nearly 25% of their 2014

revenues from oil and gas. The least disturbed product

type will be power transmission products. However, the

market for hydraulic systems, which is part of this product

group and is quite reliant on oil & gas industry sales, faces

significant declines in 2015.

Overall, the IAE market will continue growing in 2015,

with revenue expansion expected to come in at 4.5% over

2014 levels. As oil prices begin to recover, which is widely

expected to occur by late 2015, the outlook for industrial

automation suppliers will only brighten further.

Raj Batra, President Siemens Digital Factory Division USA, stated that large and small manufacturing companies have the opportunity to reinvent themselves with the application of new technology. Batra described how the future lies in the convergence of product design, production planning, production engineering, production execution, and services. This convergence can be accomplished by using the latest technologies to create the digital enterprise. The digital integration from design to manufacturing shrinks the time to market and improves quality. This enables companies to more efficiently deliver product and process innovation and be more competitive. We have reached an inflection point in industry where products, business models and positions that once gave companies their competitive edge are no longer secure unless companies embrace new technology.

Batra discussed how automation systems are aging and reaching the end of their useful life. He noted something he has never quite understood by saying, “Since it is not in vogue to keep your iPhone for 6 months, how is it OK to have an automation asset running for 30 plus years?” He cited a Morgan Stanley study

estimating the average age of U.S. industrial equipment is the highest it has been since 1938.

The environment for manufacturing growth in the United States is good. Capacity utilization is at 78% and consumer spending is making solid gains. Manufacturers have the opportunity to embrace digitalization that will achieve more speed, agility and efficiency and lead to a competitive advantage.

Ford ExperienceAndy Herbert, Plant Manager Chief Stamping Engineer of Stamping Business Unit at Ford Motor Company, described their experience and vision for a controls standard. Herbert and the stamping business unit have responsibility for all the stamping dies and stamping equipment in North American Ford plants. This year they launched four new press lines, two new blanker machines, one straight cut, all with new controls. In addition, he has responsibility for hydroforming and other equipment, which makes the unit a diverse organization. He noted that the first thing people typically look at when entering a car showroom are the lines on the vehicle. “That’s what we do,” said Herbert.

Herbert described his experience 8 years ago when he took over a plant. One of the presses still had controls with vacuum tubes! Highlighting the need for controls standard, he discussed how one plant had a production line with five presses. It had three different types of presses which included four different drive systems, five different types of controls, and four different types of automation. The diversity of automation and controls posed

challenges to those who operated and maintained the lines in a plant. In the United States, they have ten plants. Europe has five plants and Asia Pacific has 8 plants.

In all, they have a total of twenty-six facilities around the world. Ford has defined a new global control and automation standard to simplifying engineering, programming, operations and maintenance.

Controls and automation are becoming a major competitive factor and the simplification using modern technology is essential for efficiency. Benefits include improved safety, higher quality, faster delivery, lower cost, and more efficient maintenance. Herbert emphasized how operators can now run any line without having unique training for each.

All of this ties into the ONE FORD concept to achieve global continuity and enable continuous improvement. Ford’s goal is to become the best automobile maker in the world.

When asked about attracting new talent, Herbert related his recruiting experience at his alma mater Ohio State. He believes potential employees want to see the products being produced and are attracted to those that excite them. “When I started with the company in 1985, what enticed me to come to Ford was the 1983 turbocharged T-Bird,” said Herbert. “That was it!” Young engineers want to see the product they can take part in producing and it doesn’t matter if they are in controls, design, or other engineering and manufacturing function

Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina may invest in an overseas refinery for the first time to help meet the rising fuel needs of Southeast Asia’s largest economy, its new CEO told Reuters.The quest for oil-processing capacity abroad is partly spurred by a dearth of investor interest in building refineries at home, a result of unfavourable investment conditions set by the government. Overseas assets have also become more affordable after benchmark oil prices slumped 50 percent from their peak in 2014, slashing valuations.”We may acquire a refinery overseas, but its (production) would be dedicated to us, We will look for an opportunity now because a lot of (refineries) have been offered for acquisition “said Dwi Soetjipto Pertamina CEO .

For years, Indonesia’s fuel output has suffered from a lack of investment in its refinery sector. The newest refinery was built in 1994 because of high operating costs at its aging facilities, imported fuel is often cheaper than domestically produced fuel.

To re-balance that, the former OPEC member has signed agreements with global energy firms to upgrade its refineries and build new facilities, hoping to double domestic fuel output by 2023. Indonesia’s fuel needs are rising 5 percent a year from around 1.6 million barrels per day, of which Pertamina supplies around half from its six domestic refineries.

Seoetjipto declined to comment on a budget for the plan to invest in a refinery overseas. He said Pertamina was also studying the option of being a shareholder in an existing refinery and we don’t have to be the majority shareholder. It depends on how much (fuel) we can take”. While tumbling oil prices have made overseas assets cheaper, they have also halved profits in Pertamina’s upstream business. The firm is targeting its 2015 profits to slightly exceed the $1.5 billion earned in 2014, said Soetjipto, appointed to his role in November.

Indonesia’s move to shift the burden of fuel subsidies to Pertamina has also cut into its capacity to invest, Soetjipto said. In January to February, the firm lost $72.5 million on fuel sold at prices set by the government below Pertamina’s preferred level he said. Because of these “difficult conditions,” Pertamina has cut its investment plans this year from $7 billion to $4.5 billion, Soetjipto said.

Pertamina is also watching its trading arm Petral closely. “If they can’t bring added value we will just dismantle (Petral),” Soetjipto said, noting Petral directors’ salaries had already been halved.

Modern CNC machine tools use tool path data generated automatically from a CAM software package. This allows for highly complex parts to be machined without the extensive manual programming used in times gone past. Now, 3D models that have been designed in modelling software, as well as 2 dimensional cad drawings, can be used to generate the CNC data for use directly at the CNC machine. However, not all CNC machines have the same capabilities. What is Prismatic Machining, and what type of CNC machine do you require for it?

CNC Routers, Mills and Machining Centres are now very prevalent in manufacturing shops around the world. These come in many shapes and sizes, as well as varying levels of complexity. Often, with a little ingenuity, quite complex machining jobs can be performed with limited machine capabilities. We will briefly discuss some of the main differences between these types of machines, along with a couple of limitations.

5/6 axis machining is the optimal method for machining 3 dimensional objects. They may be a robotic arm, but more often are a vertical or horizontal mill with a bed that can rotate and tilt. This type of machine is able to machine from almost any angle to create a finished part. The down sides to this type of machine are the initial cost, as well as the extensive training required. Prismatic Machining is one of the many machining options for this type of machine.

4 axis machining is more common and usually involves a vertical spindle that can move in 3 axes, and a 4th axis to rotate the work piece so that processing can be performed on the reverse or adjacent faces. Machines such as CNC routers and Machining centres sometimes employ this method. Prismatic Machining is also suitable for this type of machine.

3 axis machining is similar but without the benefit of a rotating platform axis. This is the most common form of CNC machining centre and can perform surface machining on free-form shapes of any kind but only from a vertical perspective. Once again, Prismatic Machining is suitable for this type of machine.

2.5 axis machines are usually able to run a complex path in 2 axes simultaneously, but require a step move for the third axis. Often this is used to move to a specified Z depth into the material in one move, and then perform some form of horizontal machine routing in order to remove material. Prismatic Machining is suitable for this type of machine, although there may be some limitations on the type of processes that may be performed.

2 axis machining allows for lateral motion and usually requires a manual process to adjust the depth of cut. While Prismatic Machining is possible on a 2 axis machine, it can be quite time consuming to perform the necessary adjustments for each process.

Prismatic Machining is a method that allows the use of a 2 or 2.5 axis machine to perform a variety of 3D machining. While the results can be very effective, the complexity of the software and the associated learning curve is often much less than 4, 5 or 6 axis machining. Although it is ideal for 2 or 2.5 axis machines, the same processes are still very applicable to more capable machines.

The main characteristic of Prismatic Machining is that the motion of the cutter is restrained to a plane that is orthogonal to the spindle axis. In other words, the machine can move up and down, or laterally, but not usually both at once. Tool path operations can be defined to perform four main types of machining operation. These are axial or drilling routines, pocketing, surfacing and contour profiling. These operations are usually performed in multi-level passes. Some machine controllers allow the work plane to be re-defined to any of the three orthogonal planes (XY, XZ, YZ). This will allow for complex paths to be performed in another plane also, but does not cater for simultaneous 3 axis movement.

If a team of Toronto-based researchers has its way, older adults and people with disabilities – including dementia patients – will one day have the help of robots.

The high-tech, low-cost helpers are currently being tested at the HomeLab, a physical mock-up of a furnished single-floor condominium unit at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute.

Although robotic systems such as this are likely five to 10 years away from being widely available, the lab’s research manager, Dr. Jennifer Boger, says they have “tremendous potential” for supporting dementia patients and their caregivers.

“They are intended to help alleviate caregiver burden and allow caregivers to spend more time with the person, doing things other than helping with activities of daily living,” Boger said.

While the thought of robots conjures images of humanoid servants, these robots are more like a system of sensors that can talk to the patient.

A team of researchers from the University of Toronto is developing robotic systems to help patients who have cognitive disabilities, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, with activities of daily living.In the kitchen of the HomeLab unit, a system of sensors signals to “ED,” a mobile robot, with a video screen face, to wheel its way

up to the sink and help a patient with Alzheimer’s disease make a cup of tea.

“Turn the water on now. Try pulling the silver lever towards you,” ED says in its robotic voice.

In the bathroom, another system of sensors called “COACH” detects whether the patient has difficulty with hand washing.

Mounted to the right of the mirror above the sink, a video monitor shows the patient how to wash their hands.

“Let’s start washing hands. Turn on the water,” it says to the patient.

Dr. Sharon Cohen, a behavioural neurologist and medical director at Toronto Memory Program has observed the clinical trials first hand, watching actual dementia patients interact with ED and the COACH system. She believes patients can make a personal connection with them.

“There’s no reason why the individual can’t develop a relationship with an inanimate object if he or she finds it helpful and enjoys its company,” says Cohen.

RFID AND WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY

Julia Santogatta, director of wireless initiatives at Belden, looks at the security concerns associated with wireless networks, and explains how these can be overcome.

The biggest concern about wireless solutions in the industrial world often comes down to either reliability or security. However, on a wired network, passwords are not generally needed to plug a PC into a router and get onto the network. Further, there is no requirement for the data to be encrypted. Hubs can be laid down using tools such as Wireshark with all of the data streams being visible. This is not the case with wireless, even with only the most basic and common security measures in place. Wireless has extensive built-in security and, as the standards evolve, mandated security requirements have expanded, making wireless inherently more secure. Wireless can be an extremely secure, shared medium if you follow an important ‘Wireless Golden Rule’ – deploy securely, monitor regularly –and begin by asking some typical questions about wireless local area network (WLAN) implementation and security.

Even with the best security strategy in the world – wired or wireless – things change over time. It is key that security strategies include setting up systems to monitor the network, automatically alerting for unusual activity, as well as having a regular update process for the system, software and plan. Researchers regularly identify new threats. In order to stay protected, regular monitoring is vital.

Secure deploymentHow can wireless systems be deployed securely? To get started it helps to answer seven simple questions about the implementation:

1. Are the network devices protected? Network devices can include switches, routers, other access points and controllers. The

wireless network should not open up potential trouble for the rest of the network. Firstly, disable older, unsecure configuration methods such as telnet, http and serial. Then change the configuration default passwords. Then, the best way to protect the network devices is to utilise varying levels of access to the devices. This can be done by considering the use of access control lists – either

through individual local databases on a device, a central integrated or external RADIUS server, or by using TACACS+ authentication and authorisation.

2. Is the network protected from misconfigured devices and bad behaviour? A misconfigured device could be anything on the network – a PLC, a drive, an access point, or a computer. It can be possible to have a device re-configured and to introduce errors, such an uploaded of an old version with the wrong IP address set or unintended changes to the traffic routing or security settings. A device may have been infected with a virus and instead of communicating to the machine next in line, it attempts to connect to the internet.

In such scenarios, there is a need to prevent rogue devices or users from affecting the network. For those using EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profinet UDP or other industrial protocols, the best solution is to implement the Layer 2 or Layer 3 firewalls that are built into the access points. Use these to consider limiting network traffic to only expected and accepted traffic types. An extra measure of authentication can also be added by using certificates on devices.

3. Are the authenticated, legitimate wireless users or devices (safeguarded from other equipment? There needs to be protection from users or machines that should not be on the network, or even a specific portion of the network so first turn on encryption. Then, take into consideration the possibility of ‘man-in-the-middle’ – a scenario in which a device intercepts communications between two legitimate parties and then masquerades itself in order to sniff data frames and scan for credentials and data it is interested in. Man-in-the-middle is often done by sending fake address resolution protocol (ARP) frames to associate the attackers’ MAC address with the IP address of another network device. The ARP packet is the discovery packet to figure out who belongs to what IP address.

To prevent modification, consider enabling IP spoofing protection. Finally, consider utilizing 802.11w functionality, such as management frame protection to further protect wireless devices and users.

4. If using a WLAN controller, is the network protected between the access point and controller? It is good practice to segment the wireless traffic from the rest of the network if using a WLAN controller. Consider turning on the functionality of a control and provisioning of wireless access points (CAPWAP) tunnel – a simple tunneling method available on most wireless access points and controllers. Alternatively, consider the use of a virtual private network (VPN) to encapsulate and encrypt data between access points and a central VPN concentrator.

5. Will the security measures recognise Denial of Service (DoS) potentials, air interference, or when other ‘bad stuff’ might be happening? Whether someone or something is purposely trying to jam the network, or something has simply caused interference – network managers need to know about it. When setting up a WLAN bridge or infrastructure, use a wireless intrusion detection system (WIDS). Within the WIDS, for example, set up simple network management protocol (SNMP) traps to send notifications when access points go away and rogue access points are detected. Once something is detected – for example, a wireless connection to a security camera is jammed – the administrator will be alerted. A WIDS will also automatically detect DoS attack points and notify interested staff by SNMP alerts, log messages and email.

6. Are there legacy devices to consider? Have they been handled properly so accidental vulnerabilities are not opened up? Most companies will have some type of legacy device in their facility. It is not realistic to update everything all the time. Take note of these devices and consider addressing any security gaps by isolation with Layer 2 or Layer 3 firewalls and per device PSK (private PSK) on a separate WLAN service set identifier (SSID).

7. Do physical considerations around the wireless devices themselves or the wireless coverage areas need to be addressed? Finally, think though the physical aspects. Will the wireless LAN travel to unintended areas? Take this into consideration and possibly turn down the radio frequency (RF) transmit power on the devices to limit coverage to approved areas. In extreme cases, it is possible to restrict the RF to necessary areas by using RF shield tint on windows or RF paint on walls. Beyond this, remember if the RF is leaking into extra areas and ensure the authenticity of any users, access points or end devices as previously mentioned. Finally, check that any cabinets and racks are locked and secure to prevent physical access.

Conclusion Wireless security does not need to be overwhelming. Remember the Golden Rule – Configure securely, monitor regularly – and get started by handling the basics and more with these key questions

ABB is the leading power and automation technology group has received orders from Hyundai Heavy Industries for electrical and telecommunication systems. The order is worth around $100 million, with about half booked in the last quarter of 2014, almost $27 million in the first quarter of this year and $20 million in the second quarter. It enables Hyundai Heavy Industries to fulfill its obligations to Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Co. under the contract for EPC Work of Nasr Full Field Development Project.

The solution has provided by ABB such as power management, power-from-shore and telecom systems which are interconnected to ensure the highest levels of efficiency, reliability and safety. The facilities covered by the referred contract will be powered by a 132 kilovolt (kV) AC subsea ring cable from Das Island, about 160 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi.

The power management system is based on ABB’s System 800xA Extended Automation control system, which integrates the network of transformers and switchgears and enables operators to control this vast electrical installation in a safe and consistent manner. It includes an intelligent asset management system for predictive maintenance of equipment, reducing operating costs and extending its service life.

ABB will supply 28 bays of compact 132 kV GIS for one onshore and two offshore platform installations as well as medium voltage products including 33 kV gas-insulated switchgear and 11 kV and 6.6 kV air-insulated switchgear. ABB pioneered high-voltage GIS in the mid-1960s and has a global installed base of more than

23,000 bays. Its product portfolio covers voltage levels from 72.5 kV to 1,200 kV.

Additionally, ABB will supply multiple types of transformers, shunt reactors and associated equipment ranging from 500 kVA to 100 MVA, minimizing losses through the lifecycle and lowering environmental impact. The transformers and reactors are suited for hazardous and challenging environments. ABB will also provide a complete and fully integrated telecommunication system to the Al Nasr super complex for internal and external communication and field security. Key products are computer networks, electronic personnel tracking, a camera system, radar, public address and general alarm systems, access control, a telephone system, radios and a transmission system between platforms.

The project will be executed by ABB’s engineering services and project management team in Norway, with equipment manufactured by ABB in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany and Norway. Delivery is scheduled for the third quarter of 2016. ABB has supported the Al Nasr Full Field Development Project from the concept stage, through front-end engineering and design and now the construction phase. The scope of supply includes design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning.

Carlos Arturo Torres Tovar of Umeå University in Sweden has come up with one of the greatest ideas in child prosthetics I can remember. Essentially, he designed a prosthetic arm that’s compatible with Lego, so kids can create their own custom creations off of their prosthetic.

Not only is it cool for the kids and an awesome invention, the fact that it is easy to assemble and helps children with a missing limb build confidence is heartwarming. Carlos believes his IKO arm, which features a twist-and-lock modular design, will help kids who used to see another child with a prosthetic as different in a different light, probably even the cool kid in school. It would be great to see kids bonding over a Lego prosthetic, learning and interacting at the same time! Salute to Carlos for the idea and best wishes to the research and development team as the IKO arm continues to get better and better.
