UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
You should have received your child’s Year 3 or Year 5 NAPLAN results by now. Please take the t ime to read the report closely and celebrate your child’s achievements with them. Remember that this year was a trialling time for the students doing NAPLAN – particularly the Year 5 Writing task. Overall we are pleased with our students’ results and we are on a par with the rest of the state of NSW. If you have any questions regarding your child’s results or the assessment generally, please make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher. Recently we have had cause to speak with a number of our students who have been reported by neighbours as doing the wrong thing with regard to road safety on their way home from school. Please talk with your children about being safe when near cars and roads. Especially remind them of the safety rules during the upcoming school break. On the last day of the break, our local Lions Club is running the Kings Langley Village Fair at Morgan Power Reserve, Vardy’s Road on Sunday 13th October from 9am to 3.30pm. The organisers have also arranged for a School’s Got Talent competition – whereby local schools can showcase the talented students they have in their school. We here at Lynwood Park are entering our Stage 1 and Stage 3 dance groups. The competition is running between 10am and 12 noon, so come along and have some fun at the fair while cheering on our students at the same time! So far, 45 of our 180 families have participated in the 2019 Tell Them From Me Parent Survey. If you haven’t already done so, can I please urge you to complete the survey before 25 October 2019. It won’t take long to complete, and it will provide us with valuable information to assist in our planning for future directions for our school. Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions. The survey can be accessed from this web address: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/lpkp1 In term four, we have some exciting events coming up related to our desire to provide even more quality extra-curricular opportunities for our students. In 2020 we are hoping to form a Y3-6 school concert band in conjunction with other schools in our area. The exact composition of the concert band will depend on the levels of interest and participation each school receives from its students and parents. We are hoping to form small band ensembles in each school. These will then have the opportunity to perform in a much larger concert band by combining together with the other schools. To help us in our endeavours, Seven Hills High School has offered their resources to enable this project to be a success. The overall project management, music tutoring and organisation of the concert band will be performed by School Bands Australia (SBA). We have three dates coming up in term four related to this project:

If you haven’t downloaded our app yet, please consider doing so. It’s free and we send a lot of information and updates to our community using this app. Addit ionally, you can use it to send through absence or late notifications to the school. It is particularly handy to have when an excursion is coming up, as we can send last minute notifications or change of plans to our parents quickly and efficiently. For Apple devices it can be accessed from the App Store, and for Android devices it can be accessed from Google Play.
Download instructions:
Search for “School Stream” and download to your phone.
Open the app and type “Lynwood Park” into the search bar to load the school’s profile.
Make sure you agree to Push Notifications when the app prompts you.
Please read the flyer attached to this newsletter regarding the Saver Plus program. It is a free savings program whereby
eligible participants can receive up to $500.00 from ANZ bank in matched savings for education costs for themselves or their

Learning Snapshot
Focus on Mathematics: Measurement
and Geometry
Students have been learning a range of new skills and information during Math
(Measurement and Geometry) lessons.
Students develop their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding through a
range of learning experiences across
measurement and geometry lessons. This broad syllabus strand includes learning relating to length, area, volume and capacity,
mass, time, position, two- dimensional and three- dimensional space.
Kinder Classes have been learning about capacity.
Through hands on measuring, Kindergarten
have been able to estimate, compare and
record the capacities of everyday containers.
Students enjoyed using the sandpit to fill
containers, predicting what would happen if
more cups of sand were added and explaining
why characteristics of the containers help
determine their capacity, for example tall
containers do not always hold as much as short-
er containers if they are tall and thin.
Stage 1 Classes have been learning the difference
between volume and capacity. They have been
exploring, measuring and recording these using
uniform units such as millilitres, litres and cubic
centimetres.
Students have enjoyed changing the shape of
objects and exploring the changes, if any, to its
volume and capacity.
Stage 2 Classes have been exploring the concept of
mass. We have been using scales to assist in
measuring, recording, comparing and estimating
the masses of objects using kilograms and
grams.
The students have enjoyed using the scales and
estimating the mass of objects around the
classroom environment. They have also been
building objects and can use a range of
numerical skills to calculate the volume of the
object they have built. Students realised that an
object can have the same volume but be a dif-
ferent shape.
Stage 3 Stage 3 has been learning to use a range of mathematical skills- measuring, multiplying and applying algorithms - to calculate the volume
and capacity of objects. While Stage 3 can calculate the volume of objects well using sums, they certainly enjoyed building 3D objects and calculating the volume of those objects.
After Stage 3 finished building and calculating volume of their own objects, they then turned to
calculating the volume of everyday objects and discovered why volume is important.

Sports Mufti Day
On Tuesday the 24th September the students of Lynwood Park
participated in a Sports Mufti day and were encouraged to come
to school wearing the team colours of a sporting team they
support.
The cost of wearing “Sports Mufti” on the day was a gold
coin donation or a ‘Gala Day’ donation for students in years
3-6.
Thank you to every one for supporting this event .

PBL – Reward Day
On Tuesday 24th September, students in K-2 and 3-6 were
rewarded with free play sessions in recognition for their
exceptional behaviour throughout this term.
Congratulations to all these students on following the
expectations of our great school!
Thank you to the school community for your understanding
regarding our decision to postpone the K-2 Zoo excursion. It was
truly a great decision as the weather turned out to be worse than
expected.
While the students were disappointed, they have looked forward
with great anticipation to their excursion in Week 10.
We look forward to sharing some recounts of our day with parents
and friends in the first newsletter of term 4. In the meantime, here
is a sneak peak of some of the animal friends we met on the day!

Stage 2 Homework Projects
As part of their homework this term, stage 2 students designed
and created their own cereal boxes. They then marketed their
cereal boxes in a presentation to their peers, stating a price
comparison, where it could be purchased and explaining the
ingredients and the benefits of their cereals. Students did a great
job and had fun creating their product packaging. Here are some
of the cereal boxes.
Stage 2 Teachers
Radical Recyclers
Last week, stage 2 and stage 3 students were treated to a free show
provided by Blacktown Council about recycling. The show was very
entertaining and informative with a high element of student
participation. All students thoroughly enjoyed the show and were
able to take away some information about how they can increase
their recycling at home and at school.
Students in 3-6 have been collecting soft plastics from their recess
and lunch at school. It is then taken to Woolworths to be collected by
a company called Red Circle who can recycle it into products such
as furniture and bags. In doing this, students also became aware of
just how much soft plastics we are using every day at our school
and when they counted it up at the end of the week they decided
that they needed to reduce the amount of food they are bringing to
school in plastic.
Students have been trying to bring in reusable containers and to
also pack healthier snacks that have their own natural packaging
such as bananas, apples and mandarins. One of the photos shows
a big bag of soft plastics collected at the end of just one day from
the 3-6 students! Also are some other photos showing delicious food
brought in reusable containers by some of our students, in an
attempt to reduce our plastics and our impact on our school and the
environment.

Smooth Walking Excursion
In week 9, Seven Hills High School invited our Year 5 students to spend a day finding out about life as high school students. This is intended to begin the process of preparing our students for the changes ahead when they finish primary school, to help to deal with fears and to get them excited about the new things they will be doing. A big thankyou to the parents who helped with transport on the day, allowing us to offer this exciting day at no cost to the students. Here are a few comments by students about the day. We met 2 students who went to Alabama to a NASA space camp. The showed us pictures and told us all about their trip and the things they learned about space travel. In science we had to build a balloon rocket. We had to release it and see which one went the furthest up a string line.
In a history lesson we found out about Ancient Egypt. We got to make our own little models of mummies. For food tech we went to a kitchen and the Year 9 students helped us make cookies which were delicious. They made us do the washing up and we each got a bag of cookies to take home. The school gym has lots of equipment that we got to use. We used a treadmill, exercise bike, ropes and a weight machine. It was really hard work.
For sport we played slide hockey in the hall. The game was real-ly fun. The day was lots of fun. I can’t wait to go to high school.
Stage 2 – Who Killed Kermit?
Long neck Lagoon - Enrichment Program
On Wednesday 18th September, Jordan, Katija, Chase and
myself went to Longneck Lagoon for an enrichment Program.
When we arrived we had to wait for everyone to arrive.
There were two other schools there to do the program as well.
Once everyone was there we went in to the classroom where
we did our first activity. Our first activity was called ‘Being a
Scientist’ which involved asking a question, doing research,
making a hypothesis, conducting an experiment and collecting
data. Sometimes we had to conduct the test more than once.
We also did water testing for turbitdity, ammonia, oxygen, pH
and temperature. It was a very fun day and we would like to
thank our parents for driving us there.
Poppy Monger, 3/4 Magenta
We went to Longneck Lagoon on Wednesday 19th of September. It was raining but it was fun to be with other schools doing activities. The most fun part was when we got to go dip-netting in the rain and my hair got drenched! When we got back we got to use the microscope and look close up at the bugs we found. At the end of the day we all got a certificate and went home. Katija

Peer Support
We have already arrived at out last week of Peer Support for 2019!
The students have had a lovely time getting to know, and work with
students from all different grades. Year 5 and 6 students have done
an amazing job as leaders, they have developed a whole range of
problem solving skills as well as building new friendships to help
younger students. Thank you to all the staff for assisting Peer
Support to be a success this year.

This year’s gala day will be held on Wednesday, 23rd October and
planning is well under way for this very popular school event which
is now held every 2 years. Gala day aims to raise funds for
resources, the Year 6 farewell and for the school gift from the
departing Year 6 students. This event is for all K-6 students and
classes 5/6A, 5/6S and 5/6T will be running the gala day with
students already planning for their stalls to ensure there is plenty of
variety and fun involved.

Gala Day. They have been screen printing and painting ink
designs onto fabric library bags ($3 each), busily making loom
band bracelets (20cents – 50cents), melting their designs down
into drink coasters (50 cents each), hot gluing hair accessory clips

Gala Day Activities
To assist you in budgeting for your child for Gala Day, a list of the expected activities and their costs follows. Talk to your child about what activities they might like to spend their money on when attending the Gala Day activities on Wednesday, 23rd October. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn about allocating money and spending for specific purposes – particularly if they are limited in the amount of money provided to spend.
GALA DAY BBQ We are running a barbeque on gala day.
As teachers will be busy supervising students, parents or family members are asked to help organise the barbeque and ‘bag’ the sausage sandwich. If you are able to assist on the day, please see Mrs Stewart asap. Your help would be much appreciated!
Students will be asked to pre-order their BBQ sandwiches, they will not be available to purchase on the day. The order form was sent home yesterday. Please see the office if you need a new order form.

How does Saver Plus work?
Saver Plus participants select education-related items they wish to save for. They agree to a savings routine over a period of 10 months. If participants make regular and consistent savings deposits and completes the MoneyMinded Financial Education Program, every dollar they save will be matched with an additional dollar, up to a total of $500.
Matched funds are used to buy an education-related product or service for the participant's personal vocational development or their children's educational costs. For example, education resources could include uniforms, textbooks, camps, excursions, special subject costs, musical instruments, sporting equipment or a computer.
Where are savings deposited?
Saver Plus participants open an ANZ Progress Saver account in which they deposit their savings. This account does not have any monthly account keeping fees.
What does the MoneyMinded Financial Education Program involve?
The MoneyMinded Financial Education Program covers personal finance and money management. It usually involves four workshops each 2.5 hours long. They are conducted in small groups. They include saving strategies, setting goals, budgeting, superannuation, scams, credit cards, credit checks and banking. The workshops are informal, fun and interactive. They are designed to help develop financial skills, knowledge and confidence.
What happens if participants want to leave the program or make withdrawals?
Participants are free to leave the program at any time. This would mean that they give up the opportunity to have their savings matched with additional funds, but they still receive all of their savings and any earned interest.
Participants are advised to use the account exclusively for Saver Plus program savings and whilst they are not prohibited from withdrawing their funds before the end of the program, the amount withdrawn will not receive matched funding.
How will participants receive the matched funds?
At the end of the savings period, Saver Plus National Office will arrange for an electronic funds transfer (EFT) into the participant's ANZ Progress Saver account after receiving a request with a copy of evidence that shows the price of the item/s and details of the registered business that is selling the item/s.
