SOVIET UNION- JOSEPH STALIN
• fascism - government rooted in militarism, extreme nationalism, and blind loyalty to the state
• outlawed all political parties but his own
• outlawed criticism of the government
• If you were caught you were put in jail or killed
• Conquered Ethiopia by the use of aggression (warlike act without cause)
ITALY- BENITO MUSSOLINI
• Turned the National Socialist German Worker’s Party into the Nazi party.
• Used anger from the Treaty of Versailles to gain support.
• Becomes dictator of Germany, turns them into a fascists state.
- Militaristic totalitarian state
- government controlled press, schools, religion
• Scapegoats = Jews blamed for all of Germany’s misfortune - rounded up and put into concentration camps.
• Used propaganda to “brainwash” the people
• Defies Treaty of Versailles – builds up arm forces and expands east - Rhineland

• Good Neighbor Policy - He got rid of the Roosevelt Corollary (Teddy) - Got rid of the Platt Amendment which limited Cuban independence - Removed troops from Nicaragua and Haiti – FDR tried to repair relationships with Latin America.
