July the month of Ukrainian Saints ‘Let us today worthily honor the memory

of the first flowers of Christianity in the

lands of Rus’-Ukraine and those who have

shone forth with heroic virtues during the

persecution of the faith as true righteous

ones of God and witnesses of the Gospel of

Christ, for today they pray for the salvation

of our souls in the glory of God.’

On July 10th we celebrate one of the

founders of monasticism in ancient Rus

-Ukraine, St. Anthony Pechersky, laying the

foundation of the Kyiv-Pechersky Monastery

-monastery of the Caves. St. Anthony and

St. Theodosius adopted the monastic rule of

Ss. Basil the Great and Theodore Studite

and adapted it to the circumstances of our people. In Ukraine,

the monasteries were never distant from the cities and the

people. Many of our monasteries have miraculous icons and

became sites for pilgrimage. The nobles and average lay

people could visit the local monastery to seek spiritual

advice from the monks.

On July 11th we celebrate St. Olha-Princess of Kyiv,

grandmother of St. Volodymyr the Great-Baptiser of Rus

-Ukraine. The Tale of Bygone Days extols her in these words;

‘She is the forerunner of the Christian land, as the morning star

before the sun, and as the star before the dawn…She was the

first to leave the land of Rus to enter the kingdom of heaven;

for this reason, the sons of Rus praise her as their Queen,

for even after death she prays to God for the land of Rus.’

St. Olha is the first Christian ruler to occupy the throne of

Kyiv, the first enlightener and teacher of the Christian

faith in Rus-Ukraine. Her baptism opened the road for the

Christianization of our people which would be undertaken by her grandson, Prince Volodymyr the Great.

On July 15th we celebrate the Baptiser of Rus-Ukraine

Prince Volodymyr the Great. Being raised a pagan;

Volodymyr was baptized and became known for his great faith

which was expressed in various charitable works of mercy.

He accepted the Christian faith in its Byzantine

Святі нашого народу - це святі рівноапостольні великі князі і просвітителі української землі Володимир та Ольга, стовпи віри й славетні воїни Христові, засновники українського монашества преподобні Антоній і Теодосій, світочі смирення, побожності, миру, справедливості та непротивлення злу страдники Борис і Гліб, подвижник церковного єднання священномученик Йосафат, преподобна Йосафата (Гордашевська), блаженні пратулинські мученики Данило, Лука, Вартоломей, Онуфрій, Пилип, Костянтин, Микита, Ігнатій, Вікентій, Іван, Константин, Максим, Михаїл та їх брати у звитязі муче­ництва пізніших часів Миколай, Григорій, Йосафат, Іван, Гри­горій, Василій, Микита, Симон, Теодор, Павло, Петро, Климентій, Леонід, Микола, Омелян, Зенон, Іван, Северіян, Яким, Віта­лій, Андрій, Микола, Роман, Олексій, Лаврентій, Олімпій, Тарсикій, Володимир, а також інші численні преподобні, ісповідники, святителі, мученики, священномученики українського народу, які під час свого життя прославили Бога на рідній землі. Після їхньої смерті Господь прославив їх численними чудами. Наш народ вшановує їх як заступників на небі. На світі живе незлічена кількість героїв, пам'ять про яких не зникає із занепадом цивілізацій, а навпаки, з плином часу все більше зростає. Це – святі. Святий Іван Богослов в об'явлені пише: Великий натовп, перелічити який ніхто не міг. Від імені кожного народу і племені, які стояли перед престолом і Агнцем, одягнені в білі одежі, із пальмовим віттям у їх руках. Вони викликували гучним (prod. na st. 3) (cont. on pg. 3)

Цей численний натовп – це святі, які своїм праведним життям на землі вибілили свою небесну одежу і удостоїлися найпочеснішого місця в небі – біля самого престолу Божого. Серед тієї кількості святих є й українські. Часу не вистачить, коли хотів би розповісти про Володимира Великого і всіх засновників і просвітителів Русі; Антонія Печерського і його послідовників та всіх інших українських святих. Тих, хто зрікалися світу, посвячувалися на служіння Богові, склали обіти досмертної чистоти, добровільної убогості і абсолютного послуху. Тих, хто постійно молилися, терпеливо зносили всі труднощі, які зустрічали на життєвому шляху. Тих, які монашою рясою закрилися від світу, стали засновниками монашого життя на своїй землі. Святі молилися до Господа і перемагали. Вірили в Нього, і Він допомагав їм. Тому роби тепер те, що вони робили колись, - і будеш там, де вони перебувають, - в Небі. Амінь. о. Іван Залуцький

form of worship, which became the spiritual-moral fiber of our nation, becoming the basis of our culture, customs, and morality. Most of our national customs and traditions evolve around the church. Our Christian faith and it’s uniquely Byzantine-Ukrainian expression provided great spiritual consolation for our people during centuries of foreign occupation, to the imposition of godless Communism that took away their moral fiber, to the new god of consumerism and post-Soviet corruption. On July 24th we celebrate the Passion-Bearers Ss. Boris and Hlib. They were sons of St. Volodymyr, after his death the Princedom of Kyiv was divided among his sons, but Sviatopolk murdered his brothers Boris and Hlib to take their portions of the Princedom for himself. Boris and Hlib were informed of their brother’s evil intentions. They were deeply committed to their Christian faith, and preferred to love their enemy, and refused to raise a hand against Sviatopolk. They imitated Christ, who knowingly and willfully went to His Passion for our salvation.
