Abstract
This thesis on “Construction and Negotiation of “Lanna-ness” in Contemporary Thai
Painting” explores negotiation of meanings of Thainess in Thai art world through a group of
Northern Thai artists. The researcher employs concepts in anthropology of art, particularly the
idea of “art communities”. The ethnographic fieldwork, based mainly on interviewing with artists,
was conducted between May 2009 to April 2010.
The main finding is that Thai art world is a field where various Thai ideologies such as
nationalism, monarchism, and localism, are contested. In this Thai art world, many organizations
and agents, including the state, the private sector, art markets, art connoisseurs, galleries, and
artists, participate to negotiate for the meaning of Thainess. Artworks representing imagined
Lanna-ness are a construction of Thainess selected from different aspects of ways of life. By
illustrating their own local culture, the Northern Thai artists directly challenge the domination of
the mainstream central Thai culture. In addition, Lanna-ness represented in contemporary Thai
paintings produced by this art community is a contested identity negotiating with the global art
world.

Abstract
“Alcoholics and Social Disorder” seeks to understand why most alcoholics in Thai society fail to free themselves from habitual drinking and alcoholism. To explore this problem, I find “illness narrative,” a concept proposed by Arthur Kleinman, a powerful tool to engage with patients while being able to bear witness to their suffering and the fragility of their human conditions. The main finding of this research is that though generally viewed and treated by medical staff as the patient’s personal problem, alcoholism is closely related to the political economy of alcohol business. Monopolized by a few major corporations and legally sanctioned by the Thai state, alcohol business makes available alcohol beverage for people of all ages and classes. This results in the increase in alcohol consumption. Such a condition also pushes people suffered by alcoholism to the margin of the moral community. That is to say, because alcohol production and consumption is not illegal, alcoholism – though a threat to social well-being and stability – is not viewed as a serious or urgent problem. This worsens the situation of the alcoholics for they are viewed negatively by society while being denied helps. Thus, to alleviate the suffering of the alcoholics, all parties concern have to transform the social roots of the illness as well.

Abstract
This piece of research intends to present a sociological perspective on the pirated CD
market. Using Bourdieu’s work on economic behavior as a guideline, this paper argues against
the traditional economics standpoint that explains the emergence and the existence of a market
solely from the decisions of buyers and sellers that come into agreements, and argues for the
seeking of historical and social explanations of economic behavior of an individual person and
the working of the market. For Bourdieu, such explanations can be gained by using his
conceptual tool, the theory of practice. The main findings of this study are as follows; the
traditional definitions of informal economy are inadequate for defining the pirated CD markets
that occur in a more advance state of technology and social complexity; the expansion of global
market has forced the Thai state to accept and enforced the western notion of patent laws which
has forced the copied CD markets into illegal status with a new name, the pirated CD market.
This illegal status, however, is the origin of the whole new historical development of the
occupational habitus of each of the existing sellers aiming at the survival of his occupation. At
the same time and by the same token, each of the sellers has developed his new fields of
structural relations mainly with state personnel and their relations are contradictory in nature,
crossing between the practices of the legal rules and the illegal rules. The future of the markets
seems to correlate with the state action and changing technologies of mass media.
