Worried or confused about Inheritance Tax?

£3.3 Billion estimated to be paid to the Capital Taxes Office in 2005/6 -

36% more than 2003/4.

Do you know how much you will contribute?

The Government rely on ignorance and inertia so take action now. We are happy to hold an initial meeting, with no

obligation, to establish if we can reduce your tax burden.

It’s your money….. don’t keep your head in the sand.

St. Saviour’s Church – Disabled Discrimination Act Building WorksAs well as being a place of worship, St Saviour’s Church is a focal point for the village of

Hagley. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 requires us to take reasonable steps to make

physical changes to our buildings to ensure equality of access for disabled people. Plans havebeen drawn up to add a new access ramp and refurbish the existing toilets incorporating atoilet for the disabled. Our fundraising target for the work needed is £30,000.00

We are seeking financial support from the community by asking if people could sponsora part of the building. The following table comprises a list of 13 sections of the building.People can sponsor units of work varying from £2 - £20 per unit. If people can gift aid theirdonation, then for every 4 units sponsored, we are able to build 5 units:-

Building Section Cost of sponsoring one unitExternal Ramp £20.00 per inchAsbestos Removal £3.50 per square footDemolitions & Alterations £5.00 per square footDrainage Works £4.00 per inchInternal Walls £5.00 per square footFloor Finishes £5.00 per square footWall Finishes £3.20 per square footWall Tiling £5.00 per tileNew Ceilings £2.50 per square footElectrical Work £10.00 per foot of cablePlumbing Work £2.00 per inch of new pipeExternal Paths £2.00 per inch of pathExternal Steps £2.50 per inch of step

If anyone can help in this way, then please let either Dave Pettit (730248) or MargaretHenderson (884788) know, or sign the list which is in either church, enter the number of ‘units’they wish to sponsor, indicate if gift aid is applicable.

My Late Mother – Mrs Roslyn HeathcockMy Dad, Leslie, and the rest of the family would like to say a big thank you for cards,

letters and other acts of kindness shown following the death of Roslyn on 2 April. She hadlived in Hagley for most of her 89 years and donations in lieu of flowers totalled £2,025. Boththe attendance at her Thanksgiving Service and the letter from Treloar, a children’s charity, affirm the esteem in which Roslyn was held.

Dear EditorAt about 2.15pm, 2nd May, I became aware of a strong smell of acrid smoke in

my house. My guests and I rushed to the kitchen, to see dark plumes of smoke andsmall pieces of paper drift past and through the open door and window.

This high level of pollution lasted for a short time only, but long enough to spoilthe washing on the line. For the rest of the afternoon, and even up to 10.00 p.m. (thetime I am writing) smoke is drifting into the house.

This is not a “one off” event, although it occurs less often now, than in previousyears. A warm, Spring day, a pleasant Summer spell, and even misty, mellow Autumndays makes someone light a fire in Spring Close. It is never when the wind is blowingdirectly into his house!

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all garden fire enthusiasts thatgreen bins are provided for garden prunings etc. and that there is also a very efficientcouncil special collection service, which costs a mere £10.00 for 10 bags of gardenrubbish, or large rubbish of any kind.

Please, please stop this anti-social behaviour.Name and address supplied

Dear Editor

Traffic Chaos in West Hagley

You will recall that you published in the November issue of the Hagley VillageNews my letter dated 28th September 2005 concerning traffic congestion in WestHagley which had been all too evident for some years and especially on WorcesterRoad B4187, part of which forms the village shopping street where congestionfrequently reaches saturation level.

Subsequently Hagley Parish Council has demanded action to deal with theamount of traffic along “Hagley’s congestion-hit village centre” and have put forwarda series of proposals in the Hagley Parish Plan 2005.

I understand that as the recent Hagley Parish Plan has no formal status it is amatter for Worcestershire County Council as local highway authority to adopt andimplement the acceptable highway proposals in that plan.

So again the question in need of urgent response is – precisely how doesWorcestershire County Council as local highway authority intend to resolve thisproblem of intolerable traffic congestion in West Hagley?

Hopefully Worcestershire County Council’s Chief Executive or Member forHagley will be able to provide you with a substantial response for publication in theforthcoming edition of the Hagley Village News.

Yours sincerely,J.H. Gemmill

Play AreaWork is now well underway installing the new play equipment. The grand

opening of the play area will take place at the Hagley Village Fete on Saturday 15th Julyat about 1.45 p.m. The project will be completed with new gates, new seats and bins witha new path to join up the existing paths and brighter lighting.

Alcohol Free ZoneWith the warmer days and lighter nights, it is time to remind everyone that the whole ofthe playing field area including the car parks is an alcohol free zone. This means that thepolice will take action against anyone consuming alcohol in that area, as it is an offence.Another thing to remember is that the CCTV cameras will also pick up any incidents, theydo work. This also applies to the day of the fete.

Sweetpool Nature ReserveThe Parish Council is currently in negotiation with Bromsgrove District Council, whoown the Nature Reserve, with a view to entering into a partnership agreement for themanagement of this site so that we can make the best use of this valuable naturalresource.

Bromsgrove District HeartstartThe Parish Councils supporting our local branch of Heartstart in their efforts to raisefunds for the British Heart Foundation. We wish Jim Austin all the best in his trek to theEverest Base Camp.

He takes over in a busy year and will be assisted by Councillor Mrs. MargaretPritchard who continues in her role as Vice chair. The council would like to thankCouncillor Alan Brown for all his work as Chairman during the past year.

We are still short of Parish Councillors, why not come along to one of the meetingsand see what goes on. Contact details for all Councillors and the timetable for meetingscan be seen on the notice board on Worcester Road.

CLUB REPORTS

The Society met on Tuesday 2nd May to hear Mr Ray Sturdy give an illustratedtalk on Worcestershire Remembered. Using a series of excellent slides Mr. Sturdyprovided a pictorial history of 20th century Worcester and its surrounding

countryside. He showed how, during the century, Worcester had been radically changed with thedestruction of many old buildings, some of which would have been of historic interest today. Manyof the changes were,of course, made to cope with modern road traffic. Pictures of the city at thebeginning of the century showed many narrow, almost empty, roads. Mr Sturdys talk also illustratedthe social history of the period; of how 100 years ago a large proportion of the population workedlong hard hours and lived in what would now be considered poverty. Industry had also changed,Worcester had been a busy river port, this had now gone and the traditional glove making and themanufacture of porcelain are now very much smaller. However, most of the changes have greatlyimproved the quality of life for most of the people.

Mr. Sturdy gives his talks to raise money for the charity MENCAP, to which he donates his fee. TheJuly meeting is on Tuesday 4th at which Mr. M. Thompson will give a talk about Carpet Weavers,Mills and Machinery. New members and visitors are all welcome at St. Saviours church hall, 8.00p.m. Visitors £1.50 including refreshments. Annual membership £7.00.

Last month the Side by Side Theatre Group gave an excellent performanceof Midsummer Night’s Dream at Blakedown Village Hall. They will go on torepeat this at the Edinburgh festival. We held a Horserace Night in the sameHall, and raised around £300 for local charities.

Many of the club members had an exciting day out at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb andhospitality was kindly arranged by the Bewdley Rotary Club.

CLUB REPORTS

AAFFTTEERRNNOOOONN WW..II..May is the month at which resolutions of national importance are discussed and

voted upon. The result of the vote is then passed to the delegate to the Annual GeneralMeeting of all WIs to be held in Cardiff. By passing resolutions at the AGM the NationalFederation of WIs is given a mandate to pursue them with the appropriate bodies.

This year the resolutions are concerned with Renewable Energy and Sport for aHealthy Population. Both were passed by Hagley Afternoon WI.

After the resolutions had been dealt with Elaine Barber gave a very informative talk on Fair Tradeand its goals to help producers achieve a fair and living wage, and to sell their products worldwide.

Hagley Afternoon WI is celebrating its 85th Birthday with a Luncheon on 21st August. It is hoped thatall present members will be able to attend this very special event together with a number of invitedguests. As well as lunch there is to be entertainment and displays to represent the WI during the last 85years. There cannot be all that many WIs formed so long ago that can say they are still here and thatthey are still thriving Hagley Afternoon can!! Something of which to be really proud.

At the meeting on 10th July Catherine Clark is to give a talk and demonstration on Some WonderfulHats! Meetings are on the 2nd Monday in each month, 2pm at Hagley Community Centre, if you wouldlike to join us.

TREFOIL GUILDThe month of May had a sad beginning with death of Betty Ellis, a member of theGuild since its inception. We will miss her very much and our heartfelt condolenceswere sent to her family.

Marjorie led the walk on May 11th and all were in need of the sustaining cup of tea awaiting themon their return, having chosen the longer route. It would not have done our map reading skills muchcredence to admit to this being a mistake.

The Droitwich Guild celebrated their 20th Birthday with an excellent supper. We certainlyenjoyed their hospitality and can only hope they mark their 21st in a like manner. In July we meet fora visit to the cinema. Liz will be making the plans for the evening of July 13th.

WEST HAGLEY FOOTBALL CLUBFirstly, I would like to thank everyone for all their help and support on

Presentation Day. It was a great success and we raised enough funds to purchase themuch needed speed and agility equipment.

Next season the club will be putting emphasis on improving fitness andconditioning and this equipment will be incorporated into all of the children’sSaturday or midweek training sessions.

It has been a very successful season for both our boys’ and girls’ teams with many winningleagues and cups and others being promoted within their respective leagues.

This season we entered our U12 Girls team into the Stourbridge & District Central Venue league. They finished third overall, which is a great acheivement for their first year.

Next year we will be entering three girls teams into the league U10, U12 and U14. We arecurrently trying to build the girls U14 squad so if any girls, age 13 or 14, are interested in joining Nick(Head of Girls Section) for pre-season training, with a view to joining the team, please contact KarenHanson on 01562 882767.

The demonstration meeting of the Club in July is by Tony Chance when his subjectis Weather and Water in Oils. Whilst oils are specifically mentioned, many of thetechniques could apply to watercolour work as well keeping in mind that thismedium is mainly transparent, whereas oils are opaque. This can include pastel

work which is also opaque. The subject reminds me of that great painting of Leader’s, February Fill Dyke which can be seen in the

Birmingham Art Gallery. The date of the meeting is Friday 14 July at 7.30 p.m. in St Saviour’s Church Hall.Looking to the next month, August, we have Animal Art in Pastel with Bob Elcock.

SCHOOL NEWS

We enjoyed our Summer Fayre, held on Saturday 17th June in Clentschool grounds. This was a true ‘village affair’ as we joined forces with St.Leonard’s Church to ensure a bigger and better event. There were plenty oftraditional stalls plus varied entertainment including Punch and JudyShows, Maypole dancing and traditional races. The funds raised will be split

between various charities and the PTA funds which in turn supports educational activities forour children.

Recently eight children from Clent lunchtime chess club took part in the world’s largestchess competition. The tournament was held at Worcester University and each child played6 games during the day in a formal competition environment. Two of our children havereached the country finals in Manchester, so well done to them.

One area of concern to governors and parents is the proposed withdrawal of free schooltransport from Clent School (and Belbroughton) to Haybridge from September 2006. Thisdecision had been made because the proposed walking route is now deemed ‘safe’ despitethe route being unlit and isolated for long stretches. Many of our parents are writing to thelocal authority to object to this decision.

If you would like your child to attend a caring Church school with modern facilities in abeautiful environment then please contact our Head Teacher, Mrs Barbara Turner. Moredetails are available from our school office on 01562 730668 and our email address [email protected].

CLENT PAROCHIAL PRIMARY SCHOOL

HAGLEY PRIMARY SCHOOLOur Spring Fayre was a great success despite the heavy rain and a magnificent

£5,000 was raised which will go towards our outdoor developments. Members of ourYear 4 choir joined 150 pupils from four other schools at Bromsgrove School for aproduction of ‘The King of Ireland’s Son’. It was a tremendous success and thoroughlyenjoyed by children and parents.

So as the end of the School year approaches, we wish all the Year 6 children lots ofluck as they move to Haybridge and whilst we are looking forward to our summerholidays, our thoughts will be with Emily Barnes’ family and fiancé. Emily Barnes, one ofour wonderful Year 3 teachers, sadly died just before the Whitsun holidays. The staff, children and parents all have fond memories of Miss Barnes and they will stay with us fora long time.

SCHOOL NEWS

In May, Haybridge was delighted to be presented with the Challenge Award for ourprovision for Gifted and Talented students by the National Association for Able Children. Thisis a highly prestigious award which only a handful of schools across the country have received. The assessors were impressed by the teaching and learning they saw and even more so by thestudents they interviewed. Well done to all those involved.

We have now said goodbye to both year 11 and year 13. Year 11 celebrated the end ofthe year with a debonair ball at the Mill Hotel in Alveley whilst year 13 celebrated in style at The BotanicalGardens in Birmingham. In the lead up to their exams, the year 11 students had a very different style studyleave with a programme of study ranging from relaxation techniques and goal-setting to structured revision andask the teacher sessions. Both year groups worked really hard in preparation for their exams and we wish themall the very best of luck; we will miss them a great deal.

We also had a very productive activities week with students taking part in various activities. There weretrips to Spain and France for the many pupils in years 7 and 8, whilst those students who stayed behind hadfun partaking in activities such as drama and engineering.

Laura Whitehead

HAYBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

In the summer term there are many school trips, some of which are residential. ThePE department have organised the annual Year 8 visit to Snowdonia. We have a group of Year12 students visiting the art galleries of Paris and a Year 10 retreat to Savio House (Year 7 studentshad a wonderful retreat at Alton Castle).

On 14 July we hope to arrange a number of activities to support the National Sports Aid fund-raising campaign. We are drawing up plans to provide pupils and staff with the opportunity to run a mileand raise money for this initiative.

Twenty-four Year 10 pupils went to Sunfield School and created some land art with Mike Fletcher. The group took lots of photographs and they will be able to use them in their course work.

The Gifted and Talented Art Club took part in a workshop with a Bhangra artist in May. On 24May, a graffiti artist gave a workshop to Year 9 students.

Year 10 will visit Worcester Cathedral as part of their GCSE preparation. Year 10 and 11 enjoyedan evening of minimalist music at the Symphony Hall in March.

Year 10 put on their own concert in March to showcase their course work achievements to date, and organised the whole event themselves! A song-writing duo gave a workshop to groups in June.

There will be an end of year Arts Showcase open to parents on Tuesday 18 July. This is a chance tocelebrate some of the highlights from the year in Art, Dance, Drama and Music. Anyone interested insupporting the evening can obtain tickets (£2/£1 concessions) from the school.

The science department organised successful activities during National Science Week. An article in the Observer described our A-level English Literature teaching as the best in the

country. Our colleagues in the English department deserve our congratulations for achieving such aprestigious award.

LADIES FELLOWSHIPIn 1906 a group of ladies at the Free Church decided to form a sewing group. They met

regularly sewing and selling garments to pay for the new church building. Subsequently theymet the challenge of two world wars knitting hundreds of garments to send out to servicemen.

As the years went by and hand sewn garments lost their appeal the group still metregularly but became known as the Ladies Devotional, meeting each month for a short servicefollowed by a cup of tea.

Ladies Fellowship, as it is known, continues this tradition of a hundred years of caringfellowship. We are a friendly group meeting each month for a time of devotion with aninteresting speaker. The average attendance is 25/30 and we love to welcome new faces. Ourmeetings are always announced on this page and you would be most welcome - so ladiesplease come and join us.

A SATURDAY NIGHT OUT“Do not try to prove your manhood by drinking!”

Words taken from a recent government health warning to weekend binge drinkers? No, theyare words which come from writings which go back over two thousand years. They are foundin Chapter 31 of a book called Ecclesiasticus. This is one of the books making up “TheAprocrypha”, a collection of wisdom books that did not become part of The Bible, but werenevertheless considered to be important sacred writings.

It is strange that these words are as relevant in the 21C as when they were first recorded. We may have more knowledge than the writer of the words..... but wisdom?

The rest of Chapter 31 is interesting. A good guide for a life-style guru!
