‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY

We often hear this sentiment around Christmas time, but it is not true for everyone. There are many reasons for people being depressed during this time of the year rather than being "jolly.” Please let me share with you some information presented by Ashley Henshaw in an article entitled, 6 Most Common Causes of Holiday Depression. It may be that someone you know could use some special love and encouragement during this time that receiving a "normal" Christmas present would not offer. Think about the following information and look for ways to help people during this holiday season. That may be the greatest gift you could give. When the colder weather sets in and the holidays roll around, many people experience a change in mood that can sometimes escalate to depression. This type of holiday depression, while common, can be caused by many different factors in an individual’s life. For some, it may be one single, solitary issue causing the depression, but for others, it can be a combination of many things with which they are struggling. In this article, you'll learn the possible causes of holiday depression so you know what signs to look for if you think you may be suffering from this condition. What Is Holiday Depression? The winter season and the holidays are one time of the year when many people become especially vulnerable to depression. This is a condition that may affect a person only for the duration of the season, or it may simply be a trigger for depression that could extend beyond the winter or the holidays. In addition to or separate from this condition, some people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which is a seasonal type of depression connected to changes in the weather. With both types of these conditions, symptoms like loss of energy, sluggishness, increased appetite, irritability and unhappiness are common. Common Causes of Holiday Depression One of the challenges with holiday depression and seasonal affective disorder is that there are so many different possible causes. Some of the many potential triggers for this condition are: Stress: The holidays, while a time for celebration, can be a huge source of stress for many people. One factor can be shopping for gifts, which takes up time, involves dealing with crowds and traffic and the pressure of deciding what to get for your loved ones. Additionally, many people may experience anxiety about how much money they are spending. Stress can also stem from organizing family get-togethers, making sure holiday cards are sent out on time and dozens of other things that make holiday schedules packed to the brim. Fatigue: Along with packed holiday schedules comes exhaustion, which many people have to deal with during this season. Fatigue is a common contributing factor to holiday depression since it leads to a lack of exercise, not wanting to leave the house and may even lead to a weakened immune system.

Family-Related Issues: Some people rarely see their families outside of the holidays, which may make this particular season a little more difficult to deal with than others. Spending time with parents, siblings and other relatives can cause tension in some families, and the anxiety of these get-togethers can also be a trigger for depression. Loneliness: While some are experiencing family issues, other people have trouble during the holidays for the opposite reason. Not being able to spend time with loved ones due to financial constraints, distance or other reasons can cause severe loneliness during the holidays. Also, those who have family members or friends who have passed away may miss them even more during these special times. Unrealistic Expectations: Some people get overly excited about the holidays, but when the reality of the events set in, they may find themselves disappointed with the actual outcome. Whether it’s holiday parties not being as much fun as hoped for, loved ones not getting as excited about their gifts as you’d hoped or other bad experiences, a holiday season that doesn’t match up with an individual’s idea of what a picture-perfect holiday season should be often causes sadness. Reduced Sunlight: The lack of sunlight during the winter months can be one of the triggers for seasonal affective disorder. In addition to affective chemical balances within the body, longer periods of darkness can also make a person less likely to want to go outside, exercise or spend time with others. Because of this symptom, special forms of light therapy have been developed to allow those with SAD to get the light exposure that they need. If you think that you may be suffering from holiday depression or seasonal affective disorder, see a doctor or a therapist right away. There are several ways of dealing with or treating these conditions that can help you get through the winter and the holidays. May we all remember that as Christians we have special help. I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved (Psalm 16:8). We have help carrying whatever pressures we have, …casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you (I Peter 5:7). My hope for you is that you have a great and happy holiday season with your family. God bless.

When you ask for something, sometimes, you get more than what you expect. This was what I found to be true over the past few days. On Sunday, I asked for those interested in being on a Visitation team or a Connection team to indicate that on attendance cards. The response that you gave was awesome. In 2016, we had 31 family units involved with our Visitation teams and 16 family units involved with our Connection teams. As of this writing, 34 family units have expressed an interest in being on a Visitation team and 36 family units have expressed an interest in being on a Connection team. What a response and I want to say thank you to all who have signed up. These two programs have a great impact on our church family. Visitation teams primarily focus on reaching out to those who are struggling physically or emotionally. Our elders and ministers stay in contact with these individuals, but it is very encouraging to have a visit, a call or receive a card from another member of our church family. Connection teams primarily focus on reaching out to new members and visitors to our church with the purpose of helping them connect better with our church family. We have a large church family and these groups help our family feel less intimidating and encourages togetherness. It’s not too late to decide to be involved with either of these programs. Call the church office and let us know if you want to be added to either a Visitation or a Connection team. As 2016 draws closer to an end and 2017 gets closer every day, determine within yourself what you want to see accomplished and what you are willing to do to help make it happen. Individually, we can do some good things. Together, we can do some great things. 2016 has been a good year. Together, let’s make 2017 even better.

Youth Notes

Evangelism University dates are January 13-15, 2017. This is an event for only grades 9-12. We will leave on Friday from the church at 5:00PM. We will be staying Friday and Saturday night at the Pickwick Landing Inn and will return around noon on Sunday. Bring $40 for food. Challenge Youth Conference is an event in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The dates for CYC are February 24-26, 2017. We will leave at 8:00AM on Friday and will be staying at the Holiday Inn in Pigeon Forge Friday and Saturday night. We will return home on Sunday and plan to be back by 6:00PM. Cost for the trip is $85. You will also need to bring $$ for 5 meals. Deadline to sign up for CYC is December 18th. Over the holiday, enjoy time with your family. Be thankful for what you have and be mindful of what your priorities are. Don’t focus on negative things. Watch what you say and what you do. This includes what you do on social media. What you post matters. The world has enough negativity and hate in it already. We don’t have to add to it. Have a great week.
