Congratulations to Annaliese Heuvel, (Year 11) who has made the team for the ASB National Women’s League for Soccer. She is one of the youngest in the squad. Congratulations to our Head of the Maori Department Tania Cliffe who formally graduated Master of Education (First Class Honours) at Auckland University during the holidays. She is pictured here with her supervisor Dr Melinda Webber who is also from Te Arawa. Tania is grateful to the Board of Trustees who granted her leave to take up a Study Award in 2013.

YEAR 13 LEAVERS’ DINNER

The Year 13 Leavers Dinner will be held on Thursday 4 December at the Novotel at 7pm.

Tickets are now on sale at the school office - $50.00 per head.

UNIFORM

Sandals - In Term 4, students may wear plain all-over black sandals with no heel or any embellishments. Please do not wear socks or tights/stockings with sandals.

Senior Uniform for 2015 Year 12 students

A reminder to parents of this year’s Year 11 students that they will need to buy the new Senior Uniform for their students going into Year 12 next year and then on to Year 13 the following year.

Girls need a plain blue skirt and a white shirt.

Boys need a white shirt. All items can be purchased from Bill Davis Outdoor World. There may be some second-hand items available through the school.

Donations of old uniform will be gratefully accepted by the school – thank you.

EUROPE 2015

In the October school holidays of 2015 a group of students, parents and teachers is travelling to Europe for 3 weeks.

We have, unfortunately, had a couple of students unable to keep their places on the trip and therefore we have 2 open places for anyone who is interested. 2014 Result notices Result notices can be ordered through the 'order documents' link in the learner login up until 31 December. It is intended that these will be issued shortly after result publication occurs in January. Candidates entered in NZQA Scholarship exams: NZQA will again digitally return marked NZ Scholarship answer booklets to candidates via YouPost once results have been released in mid-February. Note: NZ Scholarship papers will ONLY be returned digitally. Physical papers will NOT be returned. NZ Scholarship candidates will be required to register with YouPost to access their booklets. Those whose entries were in our school’s 1 September entry data file will be sent a letter to their home address during the week beginning 20 October. This letter will advise them of the YouPost registration process. Candidates with NZ Scholarship entries made after 1 September will receive registration letters after examinations have finished in mid-December. Unpaid NZQA Fees: All NZQA fees paid to the school have been sent to NZQA. Unpaid fees have been removed from our school system. Unpaid fees must now be paid directly to NZQA.

Student fee payment through learner login

NZQA will accept 2014 fees directly from candidates. They can pay their outstanding fees for 2014 online using their NZQA learner login. Online payments can be made using a Visa or Mastercard credit card, or a Visa debit card. For manual payments sent to NZQA, please remember the School Candidate Form – Payment of NZQA Fees must accompany payment.

NCEA

The school encourages all students sitting NCEA assessments this year to regularly log into their area on the NZQA Website to check their personal details are correct, internal results have been reported accurately and external entries are made. Remember - If students have any issues see Ms Sturme immediately.

SHORT TERM HOMESTAYS NEEDED – NEXT YEAR We are looking for caring, supportive homestay families for a group of boys (15-16 years old) from Torei Gakuen Boys High School, Japan, who will be visiting our school from Wednesday 25 March to Monday 6 April. NB: Easter weekend falls in the last weekend of their stay. The boys will have English lessons at RELA (Rotorua English Language Academy) each morning and each afternoon will either be at Lakes High for integration or at a tourist activity. They are transported by bus from Lakes High to RELA each morning and returned here each afternoon. The homestay fee for the 12 days is $420.00. YEAR 10 BUSINESS STUDIES CLASS - MARKET DAY

Market Day is on Thursday October 30th! As part of the Year 10 Business Studies Programme, students plan and run a business activity for their Enterprise Unit. Students have been working hard on writing their business plans and doing market research. Some of the products involved are: Giant Jelly Babies, Homemade Lemonade, Spooky Spiders and Brownie Sundaes. On Thursday October 30th, the Business Studies students will be setting up their stalls at lunchtime in the C Block Courtyard.

Due Dates for Folio Boards:

Folios must be brought to C3 by 9 am for final marking of their external submission. Late submissions will not be accepted, so please make a note of these important dates.

Level 2 Painting, Design and Photography: These were due today, Friday October 24th, 9 am.

Level 3 Design, Photography, and Painting: Folios are due to the class room teacher by Friday, October 31st, for photographing and final consultation about the layout of the work. Students must courier their folio boards directly to Wellington, on Thursday November 6th. Address labels and stickers for boards and scholarship submissions will be given to students on Friday 31 October. Pick up for the boards can be arranged and booked through the school, if payment to school is made a week before.

We had a very good night for the first event to be held in the Music Classroom since it was built. We were entertained by a talented group of youngsters from Rotorua Lakes High. The judges were an eclectic bunch, who added much enjoyment to the evening. Sam Aoake-Austin and Aroha Te Whau took out 1st place in The Senior Orginals, 1st place in the Senior covers, and won the "RELOAD" (AUDIENCE CHOICE) Photo right OTHER WINS: Judges 1st in Junior cover section was Siobhan Terry 2nd in Senior Originals was Harvey Klutman.

UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY Department of Communication Disorders

Have you heard about the BSLP? The Bachelor of Speech & Language Pathology (Hons) trains you to help people with communication disorders gain the ability to communicate successfully. In addition, you learn about the assessment and treatment of swallowing disorders. This is a four year degree with a strong focus on science (eg human biology, speech acoustics, neurological mechanisms, statistics) with a vocational qualification as the outcome. Students graduate as speech-language pathologists (therapists) and are highly employable as clinicians in schools and hospital settings both in New Zealand and overseas, or as research scientists. New Scholarships available for students studying degrees at Waiariki Institute of Technology Waiariki institute of Technology is proud to announce a new scholarship for degree level study.

Open to year 12/ 13 considering degree level study in 2015

Scholarships of $3500 toward fees or living costs, $500 each term 2, 3 and 4 in first year- $5000 total

Open to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents only

Year 12 or Year 13 attending a secondary school, wharekura or area school within the Waiariki and Bay of Plenty region.

Applicants under 18 years of age must have the written consent of their parent(s) or legal guardian(s)

Fulfil all Waiariki entry level and programme entry criteria requirements for degree study.

Fee refund scheme for school leavers offered again in 2015 Once again Waiariki Institute of Technology is offering the fee refund scheme for school leavers. This is a great way for students to save money on their first and second years of study. In a nutshell:

Students pay for their programme of study

Students must complete their programme of study, with at least 75% pass. They will then receive a 50% refund on tuition fees paid. For those who take a student loan, the

money is paid directly to Studylink. For some students this could be an up to $3000 saving

Students who continue for a second year will receive a further 25% refund upon successful completion.
