23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 7, 2014
Dear Parishioners, The Holy Infant School Board, the Finance Committee and the Parish Council are just three of the groups that meet on a regular basis to guide our church’s ministry and operation. Most parishioners, even though all are welcome at any time to attend, don’t follow these proceedings too closely. Topics of concern--some major, some not so major--are discussed at each meeting. For example, the school administration and the School Board worked together to expand Holy Infant’s preschool program. In addition to our program for four-year-olds, we opened a class this year for three year olds. The response to this initiative has been very positive. As the lives of our parish families change, we do our best to serve them and their evolving needs. At a recent Finance Committee meeting we discussed many of the needed improvements completed over the summer including the new LED lighting that has been installed in the front of our church, on the tower and cross and in the grotto area of our campus; the fourteen new security cameras that have been installed as well as the concrete and curbing repairs that have now been completed across our campus. At a recent Parish Council Meeting, we continued an enthusiastic discussion of the book entitled Rebuilt: Awakening the Faithful, Reaching the Lost and Making Church Matter. It certainly has given us the opportunity to take a fresh look at the many dimensions of parish life and discuss various ways that will bring people closer to the Lord. While all these boards are consultative to the pastor, not deliberative, the ideas they bring forward and the work they do is essential to the ongoing vitality of our parish. For their generosity and their expertise, I am very grateful! God’s blessings to you and your families,

During our Holy Hour our souls are fed in two faculties of the spirit—the Mind and the Will. In the Mind we need light;
in the Will we need strength. —Fr. John Hardon

The Deacon’s Corner As we take a continuing look at some of the prayers prayed quietly during Mass, we now take a look at those that come before and after proclaiming the Gospel.
If a deacon is present at the Mass, he will normally be the one to proclaim the Gospel. Prior to doing so, the deacon seeks a blessing from the celebrant (priest/bishop) by facing the celebrant and saying, “Your blessing, Father.” At this point the deacon bows (profoundly) before the celebrant as the celebrant makes the Sign of the Cross over the deacon and says, “May the Lord be in your heart and on your lips, that you may proclaim his Gospel worthily and well, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Ps. 19:14, Eph. 6:19). The deacon also makes a Sign of the Cross during this prayer and responds by saying, “Amen.” If a bishop or priest proclaims the Gospel he will pray (silently) as he bows before the altar and approaches the ambo, “Cleanse my heart and my lips, almighty God, that I may worthily proclaim your holy Gospel.” (Isa 6:5-7, Eph 6:19).
After proclaiming the Gospel and saying the acclamation “The Gospel of the Lord,” the priest or deacon lifts the open Book of the Gospels and venerates it with a kiss. This is a very ancient tradition and practice due to the special status that the Gospels have among all the Scriptures. The Gospel is a special “point of contact” with the Lord (as is the altar - which is also kissed). After having venerating the Gospel in this way, the bishop, priest, or deacon prays quietly, “Through the words of the Gospel may our sins be wiped away.” (Acts 3:19, Rom. 1:16; Eph. 1:13).
That’s our faith – rich in Sacred Tradition – based in Sacred Scripture! See you next time!
God Bless,
Deacon Daniel RaidtF F F
