PASTORS PONDERINGS PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Dear Parishioners, During these first several weeks of the new year, we are reminded about “call” about invitations from God to trust him and to change the direc-tions of our lives. Sometimes those invitations come loud and strong like from the Prophet Jonah in the First Reading, sometimes in a softer manner as simply “come, follow me” in a direction that we may not have expected. In either case, however, the invitations aren’t necessari-ly open ended. Okay, to be sure, we do believe in a truly and infinitely merciful God. So perhaps near the very end of a life bad, self-serving and God-opposing decisions we could come to God with an apology, as in the case of the Prodigal Son as well as the Repentant Thief on Jesus’ side on Calvary. And on the timescale of Eternity what’s the cost of squan-dering a decade or two or three… of time? As the closing verse of the hymn Amazing Grace reminds us: “When we’ve been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun, we have no less days to sing God’s praise as the day we first begun.” Still the invitations that we receive from the God, often unexpected, during our lifetimes generally do have expiration dates and our respons-es to them do have consequences. Indeed, since this week we also com-memorate the 45th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, it’s perhaps worthwhile for me to note here that I’ve baptized children that have come into this world under “unexpected circumstances,” I’ve come to know over the years at least three cases in which an unexpected pregnancy conceived in objectively challenging circumstances and terminated in an abortion ended-up being the only opportunity for one or both of the parents for having a child. No it’s not as if God was punishing the parents for their decision to abort. Instead, that child conceived outside of the norm was actually a grace whose value was only appreciated years later. I’ve also had two Grandparents who were faced with stark “Jonah to the Ninevites” choices who chose well: My paternal grandfather, a smoker, found himself diagnosed with tuberculosis, and the doctor told him: “You have a wife and two kids. Now you have tuberculosis. If you don’t quit smoking now, not tomorrow, not tonight, not even after one last smoke, but NOW, you will leave your wife a widow and your kids orphans.” He quit smoking right then and there, and lived to see his children have grandchildren. Then as World War II was coming to an end, my maternal grandmother had a choice to make. My maternal grandfather was ethnic Russian, and the Red army was marching toward liberating Prague. Ethnic Russians (who fled Russia in the aftermath of the Revolution) caught by the Red army were either shot by them or, at best, sent to Siberia. He had to flee. But my grandmother (and my mother) could have stayed. Instead, she declared her previous still quite comfortable life to be built on “things without a soul,” she (and my mother) left with my grandfather into uncertain exile and eventually into the United States. It was a consequential decision in either case, but she chose well. The Red Army stayed in Czechoslovakia after the war and Communists took three years later. She would have lost her comfortable life anyway. Instead, she chose “for better or for worse” and found that she chose Life. She kept her family together and avoid-ed truly a life of regret if she had not. Still, she was also a smoker, and when she died in Chicago in 1958 of lung cancer, my mom found at least 5 pamphlets on how to quit stashed among her things. Sometimes, one knows what one has to do, but simply can not. Still, in my family’s she’s always been remembered as a Saint for her choice at war’s end. Again, in the context of eternity there’s but one final decision – to fol-low God – that matters. Still, our decisions during our lives matter: If Peter, Andrew, James and John hadn’t dropped their nets to follow Je-sus, his mission would have continued without them and we would have had 4 other Apostles. Still, they heard God’s Call and responded to it, and … their lives were never the same again and as they say, “the rest was history.” Let’s seek to choose well, as God comes knocking on the doors of our hearts. -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

The Little Ones Living God’s Word

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, “Ons Lieve Heer op Solder.” What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion along-side a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Nether-lands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parish-es in Holland and “de-Catholicized” them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed “Old Church” by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work “hiding” St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Sunday Mass is still celebrated here. It’s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there’s no need for any of them to hide in the attic. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new fol-lowers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the com-mands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for completely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. First Reading — The people of Nineveh believed God and turned from their evil ways.— (Jonah 3:1-5, 10). Psalm — Teach me your ways, O Lord. — (Psalm 25). Gospel — This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. — (Mark 1:14-20).

GIFT What I am is God’s gift to me. What I become is my gift back to God. — Anonymous
