PASTORS PONDERINGS PENSAMIENTOS DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Dear Parishioners, Among the Resurrection accounts in our Scriptures, Jesus’ walk with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus holds a special place. For here is an encounter between the Risen Jesus and _not_ one of the Twelve, or Mary Magdalene or any other previously named disciple. Instead, here we have a lovely encounter between Jesus and two disciples who truly could have been anybody, including, if we lived then, us. And that’s what Luke, the Gospel from which this Passage is taken, wished to underline throughout his whole Gospel – that Jesus came for EVERYBODY, not just people of “importance,” instead truly for all. Now these were not two completely random people, they were disciples of Jesus. Indeed, they had been talking about Jesus as they were walking to Emmaus. And this is im-portant because we have to know at least something of Jesus in order to recognize him. If we really don’t know Jesus, if Jesus really _isn’t_ part of our life, we wouldn’t be able to recognize him even if / when he came to us. So it is im-portant that we do know Jesus, that we talk to him in prayer, that we reflect on his words and his examples, so we do un-derstand clearly who he actually is. Otherwise we’d miss Jesus’ presence even if / when he hit us over the head, and we’d even miss him in our times of need. So we do need to make Jesus part of our lives, through pray-er, through reflection on the Scriptures, and yes, here at our Mass and in special moments when we do celebrate Exposi-tion and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. We have Exposition / Benediction here several times each month – on the First Friday and on the 8th of each month. Since I’ve come here we’ve tried to hold Vigils in anticipation of partic-ularly important Feast Days. Last Saturday, we held a Vigil in anticipation of Divine Mercy Sunday. The next time we will hold a similar Vigil will be in anticipation of the Feast of Corpus Christi. We’ll try to hold a similar vigil on the in anticipation of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary in August. There are opportunities to stop and encoun-ter Christ. After all, let’s not be so busy that if Jesus came to us, we’d just pass him by. -- Fr. Dennis

- P. Dennis

The Little Ones Living God’s Word

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

BELIEVING IN JESUS CHRIST

Third Sunday of Easter

There are many ways in which religious communities are organized. Some have a central authority in a congregation, and others have a “rule” that is shared by all the members, but are a kind of federation of inde-pendent houses. Sometimes, congregations with distinct histories and ministries decide to merge. Several years ago, one of the largest mergers on record took place. Seven independent congregations of Dominican women religious, most in the Midwest, are now one new congregation enfolding more than seven hundred members spanning thirty-six states. The oldest of the founding groups, the so-called “Kentucky Dominicans,” began as a frontier community in 1822. Other communities have Europe-an roots. To get to this historic moment, the sisters spent many years in conversation, and approved the new structure by a two-thirds majority vote. This was then ratified by the Holy See. The merger allows the sis-ters to pool their resources in order to be more effective in ministry. They are living the Paschal Mystery, experiencing Christ’s dying and rising in an inspiring way. — Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Throughout the Easter season, all three of the Sunday readings are taken from the New Testament—the Christian scriptures. Together they explore what it means to believe in Jesus as the Christ, the One who ful-filled the prophecies of the Jewish scriptures. Today’s selections refer to our human weakness, yet they emphasize the forgiveness and peace that are available to those who put their faith in “Jesus Christ the righteous one” (1 John 2:2). In the Acts of the Apostles Peter invites everyone to “repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). The First Letter of John calls Jesus Christ “expiation for our sins” (1 John 2:2). Finally, in the Gospel Jesus greets the disciples with “Peace” and urges them to preach “repentance, for the forgiveness of sins” (Luke 24:47). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First Reading — The God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus. — (Acts 3:13-15, 17-19). Psalm — Lord, let your face shine on us. — (Psalm 4). Gospel — Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you” . — (Luke 24:35-48).

WINGS Faith furnishes prayer with wings, without which it cannot soar to Heaven. — St. John Climacus CHURCH God sends no churches from the skies, Out of our hearts they must arise. — Anonymous

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

CREER IN JESUCRISTO

Tercer Domingo De Pascua

What is the Saint Vincent de Paul Society? It is a worldwide Lay Organization that has conferences in most Catholic churches to fulfill the two great Commandments: LOVE OF GOD AND LOVE OF NEIGHBOR. Every parish has needy parishioners, both materially and spirit-ually. We help where we can. In other words we are a person to person Catholic ministry that sees the face of Christ in the faces of those who are suffering. We are in nearly every parish in the diocese, in every state in the nation and 132 countries of the world. The poor will always be with us. They are families and individ-uals on limited income who are having problems getting by. We feed the poor whether they are homeless or just cannot afford enough food to feed their families. Since 1965 we have been honored to extend your compassion and generosi-ty to the less fortunate within St. Philip's boundaries. Here are some of the things we do: ♦ Church Pantry – open 2 days a week to homeless and

needy families. We also have a phone line for people to call in their requests for food. IT IS DELIVERED 6 DAYS A WEEK.

♦ Campership Program – We send children from struggling families to camp for a week in the summer.

♦ At Thanksgiving and Christmas – We hand out 200 – 250 food baskets every year. At Christmas we also provide toys and gifts to children 15 and under. Thank you for participating in St. Philip's Giving Tree Program.

♦ Norwalk State Hospital Christmas Party – 2016 was our 50th anniversary. The patients as well as all of us look forward to the cookies, punch, carols, dancing and presents donated by our community.

So if anyone has been thinking “I would like to do something for a few hours every week or so to help the poor,” we would welcome you. We need assistance in picking up surplus food from Albertsons and Vons on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We could use another truck to transport the groceries. Then we organize the food, give it out to our clients, and store the extra items away. Bilingual skills are always needed. We could real-ly use a few more caring people to help us out. We will have a table outside after Mass with all the information or you can call 714-871-9317.

MINISTRY CORNER

APRIL 30, 2018, 7 PM IN THE CHURCH

As you may be aware from the news and driving on the freeway near Angel Stadium, there is a serious need for affordable hous-ing in Orange County. The consequence in some part is the increase of those who do not have a home to sleep in at night. They are taking shelter wherever they can find it. Recently, the County of Orange evicted hundreds of people who were en-camped at the riverbed. At the same time, the County turned to non-profits to aid in finding these people housing. The Diocese has been involved in this process as well and one of the organi-zations it has sought to work with is the Illumination Founda-tion. You may, or may not know, we have been working to find a way to help those of our brothers and sisters who find them-selves without homes who are sleeping on our parish grounds at night. On recommendation from the Diocese we have been working with said Illumination Foundation for nearly a year to work out a process to help find housing and at the same time provide counseling and answer other basic needs. Our hope is to begin in the latter part of June (after all our sac-ramental programs are completed for the year and our Parish Fiesta a happy memory and we have time to really think / eval-uate) a trial program with the Illumination Foundation on our property that the Diocese itself will be watching with great in-terest. The program will be focused on our brothers and sisters presently living in cars and moving them into permanent hous-ing. The program will only be at night in an isolated corner of our parking lot (Gilbert and Valencia) away from our Faith Formation buildings. The Illumination Foundation will also offer onsite security. Our town hall meeting will be to address any questions that may arise concerning this trial program. Illumination Foundation is a well run, extremely effective or-ganization. They will manage everything from counseling to on site security. And again the Diocese itself will be watching this program intently. If you have concerns or are just curious on how you can help, please come to the town hall meeting. Fr. Dennis Kriz, OSM Pastor

LENTEN OFFERING BOXES

Amen
