Bridesmaids are an impor-

tant part of the wedding

party, and most brides

opt to have a handful of close

friends and family members

play a special role in the wed-

ding. Choosing a gown and a

color that will flatter all of the

bridesmaids typically takes a

little work.

An overwhelming majori-ty of couples choose to have a

formal wedding. The average

number of bridesmaids for

these formal weddings is four.

Considering around two mil-

lion weddings take place in

  North America every year,

that's a lot of bridesmaids for

whom gowns and other attire

must be planned.

Many bridesmaids worry

about the gowns they will wearcome the big day. Horrible

bridesmaid dresses have been

the butt of jokes for years, and

many people have their own

stories of garish gowns they've

been asked to don for a wed-

ding. Some have said that

brides intentionally choose

ugly gowns for their brides-

maids to ensure they're not out-

shined come the wedding day.

Although this may be the case

for some, most brides aspire to

select gowns that will be flat-tering for all. And color

scheme is integral in the choice

of gown.

Every well-planned wed-

ding carries a color scheme

throughout. This includes the

color a bride selects for her

bridesmaids to wear. But not

every color accentuates every-

one's features. Therefore, some

experimentation might be nec-

essary to find a color that is flat-tering to all and fits with the

color scheme.

Depending on hair color

and skin shade, there are many

flattering hues available for

gowns. When making this

decision, consider bridesmaids'

ethnicity and skin tone.

African-American: Women

with dark skin and hair may

really shine in jewel-colored

gowns, including silver, gold,

purple and salmon. Very pale

colors may be daring and con-spicuous.

Asian and olive-skinned

women: Those with a slight

yellow tone to their skin will

look good in many colors,

including red, navy, peach, and

fuchsia. However, avoid colors

in light yellow, aqua, gray,

taupe, or mint, which may

make the bridesmaid look

washed out.

Fair skin: Ladies with paleskin will benefit from richly

colored gowns in jewel tones.

Pastels may work, but be care-

ful about those depending on

hair color. Pink or red-hued

gowns may clash with someone

with auburn hair. Yellow and

green may not work with a fair

brunette. Gray and silver may

wash out someone who is pale

and blonde.

Once a color is chosen,

brides also need to consider the

season. Certain colors may lookout of place depending on the

season. For example, an ever-

green or deep blue may seem

wintry during a summer wed-

ding. Similarly, russet or brown

may work for the autumn but

not for a spring wedding. Many

brides gravitate toward mid-

level blues, greens, pinks and

purples for their weddings, sim-

ply because those colors tran-

scend the seasons. After colors are worked

out, the style of the gown

deserves consideration. Be-

cause not every bridesmaid has

the same physical attributes,

many brides are now open to

selecting a color and length

and allowing the bridesmaid

herself to choose the exact

style. This way someone who is

busty won't feel uncomfortablein strapless, and someone who

is thin won't be overwhelmed

by a lot of ruffles. The intent is

to have bridesmaids feel beau-

tiful and comfortable, and dif-

ferent styles can help achieve

this.

Making the effort to

choose a gown color and style

that is flattering to all in the

bridal party will help the ladiesfeel they are truly a special part

of the wedding.

Coloring the wedding; Choosing a hue for the bridesmaid gowns

Choosing a gown that flatters bridesmaids is a significant

responsibility for prospective brides planning their big day.

E

rgonomics is the study

of the relationship

between people and

their workplace. Its funda-

mental purpose is to improve

the work environment in

order to reduce unnecessary

stress and strain on the

human body. Ergonomics

has now come to include not

only the workplace, but any

environment where one may

do a task or activity: the

home, the workshop, driving

the car, and so on. Whatever

environment one is in, being

aware of body positioning

and continually seeking to

improve the design of the

environment to minimize

stress and strain on the body

will help to ensure a healthy

spine.

The following are some

key points to remember when

learning to "think ergonomi-

cally":Whenever possible,

position your environment to

reduce strain on your body

rather than straining your

body to accommodate the

environment. For example,

if you work at a desk, do not

place heavy objects that you

regularly use (like heavy files

or books) in the drawer on

the side of the desk. In order

to get them you are forced to

bend and twist at the same

time, a motion responsible

for many back disorders. To

avoid chronic neck and

upper back problems, posi-

tion computer and T.V. mon-

itors so that, when sitting

normally, you are not forced

to look down. Monitor and

adjust your environment to

ensure your body positioning

and motions are balanced.

Be "posturally aware" at

all times. Posture is vital to

spinal well-being and health

in general. Think optimum,

balanced posture as it relates

to everything you do.Question how you can

improve your work or leisure

environment so that opti-

mum posture can be best

maintained. For example,

does your environment allow

you to "think tall"?

Design your environ-

ment so that your three basic

spinal curves are maintained

as close to normal as possible.

While you are sitting or

standing, does your environ-

ment force you to slouch,

rounding your mid-back and

pushing your head forward?

When you sit, is your back

supported so that the normal

arc is maintained without

you feeling strain? Does your

job or recreational activities

require you to look down or

bend forward for prolonged

periods?

invited to sample the soups

and cast a ballot for your

favorite soup. Salad, bread,

refreshments and desserts are

also available to accompany

the soups. This event has been

running for over twenty years

and is a guaranteed good time.

So, bring your family, bring

your friends, bring the neigh-

their motor skills on the back

burner. When the language

improves the toddler will

most likely pay more atten-

tion to the motor skills. On

the other hand, a child may

appear to have a lack of

interest in walking, but the

infant may be physically

unable to do so and may not

have the necessary strength

to perform. A child may

require intervention to

appropriately strengthen the

necessary muscles utilized for

walking.

The baby is not only a

late walker, but never

crawled and scooted on his

bottom to get around.

Scooting is an asymmetrical

activity that typically utilizes

one side of the body to get

around the environment. If a

baby is primarily using one

arm and leg, the side that is

not being used will become

weaker. In addition the mus-

cles on one side of the body

may be less flexible and if not

addressed, may cause skeletal

and muscular problems into

adulthood. Crawling is an

important developmental

sequence because it not only

builds strength in the trunk,

shoulder girdle and hips nec-

essary for stability during

standing and walking, but

also utilizes both right and

left hemispheres in the brain

in a complex action of neuro-

logical coordination.

The baby seems very

floppy and has a hard time

maintaining upright posi-

tions. The baby may feel this

way because of weakness of

the trunk and extremities.

The baby may have low mus-

cle tone (hypotonia,) a con-

dition that causes difficulty

activating the appropriate

muscle groups required to

sustain upright positions.

Although walking is a

skill with many variables it is

important that late walking

is not overlooked. Not all

children are moving at their

own pace and a wait and see

attitude is not always the

most effective. There may be

an underlying problem that is

causing a delay and should be

addressed now in order to

prevent later musckuloskele-

tal problems into adulthood.

A skilled pediatric physical

therapist can not only help

to discover why the baby may

be late with his walking, but

also employ the appropriate

treatment to get the toddler

moving.

Old age happens. Our

dogs are no excep-

tion. As our dogs

become senior citizens, their

physical and mental capabili-

ties change and their needs

change too. Being aware of

these changes and knowing

what to expect will help your

pet’s golden years be happy

and comfortable.

Some common changes

that you may expect to see in

your senior dog are: loss of

hearing or vision, decreased

activity and/or weight gain,

changes in skin or fur, dental

disease, more sensitive stom-

ach, lumps and bumps, or

even dementia. These

changes don’t happen at the

same time for all dogs because

in general, smaller breeds live

longer than larger dogs. A

good rule of thumb is that, on

average, a dog is considered a

senior at 7 years of age.

Senior dogs may act dif-

ferently and may require dif-

ferent care but age is not a dis-

ease. These dogs aren’t lost

causes and minimal effort can

add years to their lives. The

main focus should be on pre-

vention. Whenever possible,

it is better and less costly to

prevent a problem from occur-

ring, rather than wait for a

problem to develop. Detecting

diseases in their early stages

greatly improves the out-

come. Advancements in vet-

erinary medicine have kept

our pets alive longer, healthier

and happier. If there is a prob-

lem with your dog, don't

assume it’s just because he/she

is old, and nothing can be

done. With the appropriate

treatment, which can be sim-

ple and non-invasive, many

conditions can improve.

Geriatric care for your

dog and prevention begins

with routine visits to your vet-

erinarian. Most pets visit

their veterinarian once a year

but it is recommended that

senior pets be seen every 6

months. Mainly because dogs

age approximately seven times

faster than us and early detec-

tion of problems is key. Your

veterinarian may do the fol-

lowing to assess and maintain

a healthy senior dog: take a

thorough medical history not-

ing changes in behavior and

physical abilities, a complete

physical examination, early

detection blood work and uri-

nalysis, aspiration of any new

lumps or bumps, x-rays, glau-

coma checks and blood pres-

sure checks.

Based on the veterinari-

an’s findings, treatment

options and care can be dis-

cussed. One of the most

important aspects is nutri-

tion. In general, a high quali-

ty senior food is recommended

once your dog reaches 7 years

of age but there may be very

individual nutritional needs.

The best food to feed depends

on the specific problems or

nutritional requirements of

the individual animal. For

instance, obesity is a very

common problem of older ani-

mals and will shorten their

lifespan. A lower calo-

rie/higher fiber diet

would be recommend-

ed for these dogs.

Other diets would be

advised for dogs with

GI disorders, kidney or

liver disease, arthritis,

skin problems, etc.

Home care is also essen-

tial. Close observation of any

changes in mobility, drinking,

eating, etc should be noted

and reported to your veteri-

narian early. Potential prob-

lems may also be uncovered

by getting your hands on your

pet to inspect them periodi-

cally.

Feed a good quality dog

food that is appropriate for

your dog's specific needs. Do

not allow your pet to gain

excessive weight which is very

common when your senior

dog’s metabolism slows down

and they don’t exercise as

much. It can make them

more prone to arthritis, heart

disease and diabetes. Follow

your veterinarian's recom-

mendations as to exercise,

nutrition and any medications

that may be needed.

Our senior dogs may not

be able to do what they used

to but with a little prevention

and early detection they can

still live a happy, fulfilling life

and still be wonderful com-

panions to us.

Toys that encourage

physical fitness are a

great way to keep

your children fit, active and

having fun all year-round.

Therefore, giving the right

activity-gift will not only

ensure your kids have fun,

but will also stay healthy

without even realizing it.

What is an activity-toy?

One of the most popular

activity gifts is the ride-on-toy.

Aside from being fun, ride-on-

toys offer many additional ben-

efits, such as developing a sense

of balance and coordination,

and make a big contribution to

a child's overall physical fit-

ness. This year, take a look at

the PlasmaCar by Plasmart Inc.

It's a mechanical marvel that

can be driven on any flat sur-

face, indoors and outdoors, and

is powered solely by kid-power.

This attractive vehicle is a fun

way for kids to ride around the

neighborhood, keep their bod-

ies fit, and have fun at the same

time. It requires no batteries or

fuel, just the occasional cookie

or two for the driver.

What makes a good

outdoor gift?

Outdoor toys need to be

well made. Not only do they

need to stand-up to rough and

tumble kid treatment, they

need to be able to survive all

types of weather. Outdoor toys

should also have rounded cor-

ners to help prevent scrapes

and cuts that go hand-in-hand

with outdoor fun. Makers of

the PlasmaCar say it's highly

durable and can handle a load

of up to 100 kg (220 lbs) on a

smooth, flat surface, and 55 kg

(120 lbs) on a rough, flat sur-

face. Not only will it handle

the daily abuse at the hands of

your children, it's so durable

that parents can have fun rid-

ing it, too. The colour is highly

appealing to kids -- and with its

rounded curves, seat and steer-

ing wheel, this design will help

reduce summer bumps and

bruises.

If I could tell you how to

build a home with practi-

cally no more money

than a conventional heating

and cooling system, and

you’d have no heating or

cooling bills, would you do

it? If I could then tell you

how to eliminate your elec-

tric bills also and end up with

a “net zero” home, would you

do it?

I would hope so, because

this is all possible now, and

you really don’t have any out

of pocket costs because it’s

part of the cost of the house.

A Geothermal Heating

and Cooling system works off

the constant 54o tempera-

ture of the earth. With heat

pumps that take heat out of

the house in the summer and

bring it into the house in the

winter, you have an air distri-

bution system that is the

most comfortable of any

heating or cooling system

there is. If dry heat bothers

you with asthma, bronchitis

or allergies, geothermal will

reduce those symptoms and

you’ll be much more com-

fortable.

So here’s how it can

work. Contracting for a

geothermal system with Solar

& More will give you the

opportunity to save 30% on

your system and your home’s

insulation and ductwork.

How do we do this? We

design and include the

home’s air handling and

ductwork into the

Geothermal system. We

then provide the spray-in

foam insulation as part of the

Geothermal system also.

This does two things; it

increases the insulation from

the home’s “envelope” (the

insulated living area of the

house) and reduces the size of

the Geothermal system

because of this extra insula-

tion. Spray in insulation is

much more efficient than

standard mat insulations pro-

vided with most homes.

What’s all this mean?

Basically, you get a

Geothermal system for the

same amount as a traditional

heating and cooling system.

And, you get a much tighter

home with fewer drafts and

the most comfortable heat

and cooling system you can

buy!

So now you’ve finished

building the house and you’re

in. What happens next?

You‘ve reduced your heating

and cooling bills by up to

70%! You also cover about

70% of your domestic hot

water bills with this geother-

mal system as we install a

“desuperheater” that trans-

fers heat from the heat pumps

to a hot water heater. What

could be better!

Tell your architect to be

sure he considers a

Geothermal system. If he

doesn’t, we’ve got an archi-

tect who will design this for

you and it won’t cost you any

more than a traditional

design. If he’s really good,

he’ll also give you a south

facing roof for some solar

panels. This could eliminate

the remaining portion of

your electric bill to give you

that “net zero” home…no

electric, no heating and no

cooling costs…for the life of

your home. That’s energy

efficiency!

C

all it a sign of the

times or just plain

good luck for those

of us yearning to swap fastfood fare for some tasty home

cooking. Potluck gatherings

are back and one of this year's

hottest trends in entertaining.

Although these commu-

nal "luck of the pot" meals

(where everyone brings their

favorite dish) hearken back to

the late 19th century, they

found their footing in the

mid-1950's when it seemed

like every mom in the neigh-borhood was filling casserole

dishes for church socials and

family get-togethers.

"There are three primary

reasons driving the return of

potluck -- our schedules, the

economy and childhood

memories," says Chef Jeff

Gillis, www.Celebrating

Home.com. "We live such

fast-paced lives that divvying

up the cooking makes homeentertaining more realistic

than putting all of the burden

on the hostess. Making one

dish instead of several also

helps stretch the budget --

something we're all looking to

do these days. And, let's face

it -- after years of dashing

through the drive-thru,

wouldn't you like to sit down

to some home-cooked food,

even if it's only once a week?"

Got potluck fever but

not a clue what to do? Here

are four tips that'll make your

next gathering both tasty and

stylish, plus, a family-fave

recipe that'll put your home

on the map as potluck heav-

en.

Organize Participants

Divide the meal by cate-

gories so guests will have a

balance of appetizers, entrees,

sides and desserts from which

to choose. Cooks needn't

commit to a specific recipe

but it's helpful to know up-

front that a well-rounded

meal is in the making.

Agree on Advance Prep

All dishes should be

cooked prior to arrival so only

a quick re-heating is required.

Everything should also hit

your doorstep ready for pres-

entation to avoid last minute

searches for serving bowls and

platters.

Choose Easy-Fix, Crowd-

Pleasing Recipes

To appeal to guests vary-

ing tastes, save the exotic for

later and dust off mom's (or

grandma's) cookbook. Tra-

ditional potluck dishes like

casseroles, chili, soup, bread,

and cakes are always popular

Potluck's back -- let's eat! By Carla Jordan

A slow cooker (like Celebrating Home's Venetian Home Spice Bean

Pot shown here) is potluck perfect. It's sized to feed a crowd and to go from kitchen to table without missing a stylish beat.

 Bean Pot Beef Stew

This twist on an American favorite yields a hearty,

flavorful entree that takes less prep time because it slow cooks

in the oven in a bean pot.

and easy to make.

Dress Up the Table

Remember the special table-

cloth mom used for Sunday dinner?

Create some memories for your own

family with a pretty fabric table-cloth, cloth napkins (pretty and eco-

friendly!) and some candles. A few

minutes is all it takes to create a fes-

tive look that'll make guests feel

honored to have gathered around

your table.

Ingredients:

1 pound round steak, cut

into bite-sized pieces

1 large yellow onion,

roughly chopped

2 tablespoons olive oil

4 cloves garlic, chopped

fine

1 can (14.5 ounces) dicedtomatoes

6 cups beef broth (or stock)

11 ⁄ 2 teaspoons dried thyme

3 bay leaves

2 cups potatoes, cubed

1 cup celery, diced

1 cup carrots, diced

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Rub steak with olive oil and

coat with salt and pepper.

Let steak sit at room temperature in

bean pot while preparing all other

vegetables. Chop and dice every-

thing, then add to bean pot. Addbeef broth (or stock), thyme, bay

leaves, diced tomatoes and salt and

pepper. Cover and bake in 375 F

oven for 3 to 4 hours until meat is

tender.

Potluck's back -- let's eat!continued from page 21

the abhorrent future price of college,

the 529 plan created a vehicle to

accumulate wealth for that purpose.

The problem is, the success you will

enjoy in the plan will hurt or hinder

the availability for financial aid pack-

ages available to you for college when

the girls apply. 529 assets are part of

the EFC, Expected Family

Contribution. There is a better way

that will accomplish the goal of accu-

mulating capital for college and at thesame time, maximize your aid eligibil-

ity, in other words, have your cake

and eat it to. Interestingly, the solu-

tion ties into your second question,

ample life insurance coverage for you

and your spouse. To elaborate, I will

need a bit more information. In this

way I can do some work for you and

create some fascinating proposals and

illustrations that will completely sat-

isfy all of your requirements.

The answer for Carolyn lies inthe proper life insurance for her and

her husband. Interestingly, life insur-

ance cash values are not factored in

the EFC formula; yet, their cash value

may be accessed for college tuition

needs, tax-free, if removed from the

policy properly. Further, the cash

value accumulations may be linked to

a stock market index like the S+P 500

where, by formula, can only grow

without the possibility of negative

returns from crashes and corrections. Therefore, Carolyn and her husband

can use the same money to provide

for the proper life insurance protec-

tion today, a supplemental tuition

reimbursement plan in 13 and 15

years respectively and ultimately a

tax-advantaged retirement plan at

their age 67, to complement their

Social Security benefits all at the

same time! Thank you Carolyn for

your question, additional information

is already on its way to you.Our next question comes from

Bruce M, a high school teacher inWayne:

Dear Mark: Why would a person

ever have a Variable Annuity inside a

403(b)? As someone who deals in

annuities I am hoping you will have

an interesting take on this issue.

Thanks, Bruce

Dear Bruce: Your question is an

excellent one and interesting at the

same time, the 403(b) industry was

devoted exclusively to variable annu-

ities in the beginning of their intro-duction to the investment communi-

ty for those people looking for equi-

ties (stocks or stock mutual fund like

alternatives). The biggest difference

with a variable annuity is the death

benefit feature that protected the

value from market losses at the death

of the annuitant. Another name for a

403(b) is a tax-sheltered annuity or

TSA. TSA’s are available to teachers

as well as hospital workers and not for

profit organizations as their retire-ment plan of preference and all annu-

ity types are available as a TSA to

include traditional fixed, fixed

indexed and variable annuities.

Bruce, I believe your underlying

question is: Is their value in rolling

over or transferring an employer

sponsored 403(b) into an IRA vari-

able annuity where they both provide

income tax-deferral anyway?

The answer is absolutely yes! In

addition to a death benefit VA’s alsooffer a living benefit rider (LBR).

This feature, unavailable in most

TSA versions, would provide imme-

diate upgrades and incentives for the

participant. With different nuances

from each issuing carrier and product,

it’s important to check the fine print

to secure the best benefits in line with

the purchaser’s individual goals and

objectives. The finest LBR’s share in

common, a lifetime income guarantee

for single or joint annuitants, a step-up mechanism to lock in performance

gains if any and an annually increas-ing “roll-up” feature that will

increase your income base in periods

of declining or negative market per-

403(b)’s do not offer living benefit

riders which is truly a shame! It

would be my pleasure to demonstrate

to you and your fellow teachers the

variable annuities I feel offer the best

combination of benefits and value.

Bruce, just email me or call, better

like to see one of their favorite former

teachers. All annuities are not creat-

matter; therefore they should be stud-

ied carefully before making any

exchanges or cancellations.
