    Ive been thinking a lot

about this lately. I met the

    most beautiful woman Id

ever had the pleasure of laying

my eyes on in 1984, at 23

years of age. Her name was

    Teresa Faith, but her friends

    called her Terry. We started

    working together in 1984,

    which simultaneously led to a

    romance. She accepted my

    proposal of marriage shortly

    after, making it official on

    June 1, 1986.

If you think about it for a

    moment, most husbands and

    wives go their separate ways

each day for at least eight

hours of the working day. She

to her job and he to his.

    When children enter the pic-

    ture, she usually stays home

and he usually goes to work, so

    they are still separated those

eight hours, plus commutingtime and overtime. Weekends

    might allow the spouses some

    time together, unless there is

    another part-time job for

either one of them or both. At

    the very least, the kids

    extracurricular and sporting

    activities challenge that time

as well, leaving them apart for

    the majority of the Saturdays

    and Sundays, for nearly two

decades. If one of them bowls, plays golf religiously or

engages in a club activity, that

is even more time they spend

    apart. Some married couples

    spend time apart with friends

    acquired during high school or

    college fraternity or sorority;

    others spend separate time

    pursuing a hobby or attending

    classes for self-advancement.

    All wonderful activities and

    opportunities. But not me.

No, my course was a little dif-

    ferent.

You see, Terry and I have

    been doing everything togeth-

er 24 hours a day for 29 years

now. Ever since we met, wevebasically spent everyday side-

    by-side. We worked seven

days a week for the company

    that brought us together for

seven years. Then we built a

    business together. Diversified

    Financial Services Group

    started in 1991 in Pompton

Lakes and moved to Wayne 10

years later. In 2006, that com-

    pany morphed into the first

and foremost franchise in theretirement and estate plan-

    ning industry, American

    Prosperity Group, which now

spans 10 states with 18 offices.

    During the same time

and I give Terry all of the

    credit we grew our family

    size from a hard working

    dynamic couple to a bustling

    family of six! Terry brought

    Anew study in the

    medical journal

    Acta Odontologica

    Scandinvica indicates that

    bleaching with large quantities

    of hydrogen peroxide

    between 35 and 38 percent,

    the strength of in-office

    whitening treatments can

    change the makeup of enamel.

Dental products have recentlybegun advertising that they

    can help rebuild enamel and

    whiten teeth using remineraliz-

    ing agents. However, these

    agents dont necessarily help

    teeth recoup their enamel after

    whitening procedures.

    Researchers conducted an

    experiment with bovine teeth

    whitened by hydrogen perox-

ide with strength of 35 to 38

    percent. The makeup of the

    enamel was studied 24 hours

after treatment, and again aftertwo weeks. Half of the samples

were then exposed to a rem-

    ineralizing agent.

    Teeth exposed to the rem-

    ineralizing agent showed the

    highest microhardness after 24

    hours. The microhardness

    level, however, was not the

same after 14 days. Also, the

structure and makeup for all of

    the samples after 14 days

showed many abnormalities. The concept of such new

    remineralizing agents being

    added to toothpastes and rinses

    is still controversial.

    Receiving the Sacra-

    ment of the Eucharist is

    a momentous event in

    a young Christians life, mark-

ing one of the first steps he or

    she takes in individual faith

    formation. Children who

    receive the Eucharist are fur-

    ther initiated into the church

    and this enables them to

    receive Communion at each

    and every mass thereafter, pro-

    vided they remain in good

    standing with the church.

    Christian families place

    great significance on the

    Eucharist and most want to

    commemorate the occasion

with a party. Some people treat

it as they would a wedding or

    Sweet 16 party, inviting friends

    and extended family members.

Others prefer to keep the cele-

    bration a bit more intimate.

Regardless of the size of the

party, there are some tips to

    make it a memorable affair

    thats fun for everyone.

    Dont start planning until

you confirm the date of the cer-

    emony. Some churches have

one date on which they hold

administer to all candidates at a

    special mass. Others may stag-

    ger the ceremonies over the

course of several dates and may

    intertwine their Eucharist cere-

    monies with the regular mass

    schedule. Either way, parents

    should confirm the date

    months in advance so they

    have ample time to schedule

    parties and shop for appropriate

    attire.

    Reserve your date quick-

ly. Once you know the date of

the ceremony, do not delay if

you plan to hold a party at a

restaurant or intend to hire a

caterer for a party at home.

Not only will you be compet-

ing for dates with other par-ents whose children will also

    be receiving the sacrament,

but also you may be going up

    against those planning April

    or May weddings or gradua-

tion parties. If there is a par-

    ticular restaurant or banquet

hall you have in mind, reserve

    the date quickly and leave

a deposit to secure the reser-

    vation.

    Consider a catered affair.Very often a Communion

    reception takes place shortly

    after the ceremony at church.

    This means guests will go

directly from the church to the

    party. Catering the party will

ensure food is ready as your

    guests arrive. This also cuts

    down on the amount of

    preparatory work you will have

    to do. Restaurants, delis, fast-

    food establishments, warehouse

    centers, and supermarkets are

    all viable catering options

depending on the scale of the

party. To keep costs down, buy

    frozen, premade foods from the

    grocery store, and then simply

    heat them up for guests.

    Hire entertainment. If the

party will be a larger affair with

a number of children in atten-

dance, it may pay to hire an

    entertainer like a magician,

balloon artist or deejay to keep

    everyone entertained and

    occupied. Again, since many

    Communion ceremonies take

place in the spring when wed-

    ding receptions and graduation

    parties also take place, reserve

    your entertainers early on.

Remember to give the deejay a

play list that will include music

    for all ages in attendance.

A young person receivingthe Sacrament of the Eucharist

    is something worth celebrating.

Ensure your party is a success by

    planning out the details in

    advance and hosting the best

    party you can within your

    desired budget.

    Reality television has

    garnered its share of

    devoted viewers, many

of whom happen to be young

    females. Statistics indicate the

    number of tween and teenage

girls tuning into to see their

favorite reality TV is on the

    rise. According to data from

    Ogilvy Public Relations,

roughly 43 percent of tween or

    teenage girls are regular view-

    ers of reality television, while

30 percent tend to watch spo-

    radically. Some may wonder

how reality TV affects the per-

    ceptions of young women.

    According to a survey con-

    ducted by the Girl Scout

    Research Institute, girls who

    routinely view reality TV are

    more focused on physical

    appearance, and more than

    one-third think that a girls

value is based on how she

    looks. The study also pointed

out that girls views on reality

    show behavior tends to pit

    girls against one another to

    make the show seem more

    exciting. The research is not

    all negative, however. Some

    survey respondents said reality

    TV made them feel more

    empowered and that they can

    achieve anything in life.

    Others said the shows high-

    lighted the plights of

    teenagers and young women,

    helping young women realize

    there are other young women

    in situations similar to their

    own.

    Business fraud is every-

    where. It can range

    from employees pilfer-

ing small items from the office

    to embezzling hundreds of

    thousands of dollars. And

    crimes may be committed by

    anyone from the lowest-paid

    clerk to a long-time officer.

    All too often, business owners

    are oblivious to wrongdoings

    or they simply refuse to

    acknowledge the possibilities

    until its too late.

    Dont make the same

    mistakes as countless other

    victims. Here are five practi-

    cal suggestions for thwarting

    workplace fraud.

    1.Keep your eyes wide open.

    View your operation like an

    outsider and identify the

    areas that appear ripe for

    fraud. If a security problem

    persists, dont ignore it and

    simply hope it will vanish.

    Confront the toughest issues

    head-on.

    2.Review and adjust internal

    controls. Accountants often

pinpoint this area as a main

    culprit. Install a system of

    checks and balances and reg-

    ularly monitor activities.

    Note that employees may be

    deterred from theft if the

    process is well-documented.

    Otherwise, they may think

    they wont be caught.

    3.Develop reporting and

    investigation procedures. En-

    courage your employees to

    come forth about suspicious

    activities, but keep matters

    confidential. When its war-

    ranted, respond promptly

    The days when single

    income households

    were the norm are

    long gone, as nowadays both

Mom and Dad must work in

order to make ends meet. That

    reality has left many women

    juggling the obligations of

    motherhood with the obliga-

    tions of a successful career.

Such a juggling act is sel-

    dom easy, and many mothers

    find themselves neglecting one

    obligation for the benefit of

    another. The following are a

    few tips to make balancing

work and family a little easier.

    Share the responsibilities.

While the days of the single-

    income household may be a

thing of the past, many of the

    conventions of those days

    remain. Women may still feel

    the responsibility to cook fami-

ly meals, clean up after the

children and make it to all of

    their childrens sporting events

    or other school-related events.

    But those responsibilities

should be shared so women can

    ensure theyre giving both their

    careers and families the atten-

    tion each deserves. Devise a

    schedule where both parents

    tackle such responsibilities

    equally so each parent knows

    when they have some wiggle

room. For example, if your hus-

    band routinely cooks on

    Tuesdays, then you know you

wont need to rush home on

    D

    uring its first few hours

    of life, your kitten

    receives natural imm-

    unity against most diseases

from its mothers first milk, the

    colostrum. But eventually your

    kittens immune system will

    have to fend for itself.

    Vaccinations provide your kit-

    ten good protection against

    some life-threatening diseases.

    Heres an explanation of the

vaccines you need or may want

    to consider, as recommended

    by your veterinarian.

    1. FVR-C-P. The upper respira-

tory infection seen in cats is a

    complex clinical disease. FVR-

    C-P protects your cat against

the two viruses most likely to

    cause an upper respiratory

    infection in your cat feline

    rhinotracheitis (feline herpes

    virus) and feline calicivirus.

    Infections with these viruses

    can cause discharge from the

    nose or eye, respiratory prob-

    lems, mouth sores, anorexia

    and abortion. FVR-C-P also

    protects against panleukope-

    nia feline distemper an

    acute gastrointestinal viral

    infection associated with a

    sudden onset, depression,

    vomiting, diarrhea, dehydra-

tion and a high mortality rate.

    These vaccines require boost-

    ers two to four weeks apart;

the last dose is given at 12 to

    16 weeks.

    2. FeLV. Feline leukemia virus

    vaccines are available for

    interested cat owners. This

    vaccine is recommended only

for those cats with high expo-

    sure potential, such as outdoor

cats, show cats and those liv-

    ing in multiple-cat households

    (even if all are considered

    indoor-only). Before trying

    out the FeLV vaccine, have

your cat tested to see if it

already has the disease. Half of

all cats who get FeLV will die

    from complications associated

    with the disease. Consult with

    your veterinarian if this vac-

cine is right for your cat.

    3. FIP. Feline Infectious

    Peritonitis, which is associated

    with anorexia, weight loss,

    growth stunting, gradually

    developing potbelly and fever,

has a very high mortality rate.

    A vaccine was developed six

years ago and can be given to

cats older than 16 weeks of age.

It requires two doses, three to

    four weeks apart. The effective-

ness of this vaccine in prevent-

ing this fatal feline disease is

still being tested and is debat-

    able; therefore, most veterinar-

    ians do not recommend this

    vaccine at this time.

    4. Rabies. Most of us associate

rabies with the mad dog froth-

ing at the mouth, eager to bite

    anything near it. Although this

    is a common presentation in

countries where there is a very

    high population of unvaccinat-

ed stray dogs, in the U.S., rabies

    usually appears in wild animals.

    Rabies vaccination is required

in New Jersey and can be

    administered at greater than 12

weeks of age in felines. All

    warm-blooded animals

    including you can get rabies.

    The prognosis, unfortunately, is

    fatal.

    Few medical procedures

    are without risk. While trying

to prevent disease in your cat,

there is a small chance that

    harm may be done. Veterinar-

ians have observed a chance of

    developing a vaccine-associat-

ed sarcoma at a rate of 20 per

    100,000 cats. A veterinary task

    force, the American Veterinary

    Medical Foundation,

    has been assigned to this

    problem and makes the

    following statement on

    its website: Disturbing

    as this issue may be,

    there is great concern

    that cat owners, attempting to

keep their cats from harm, may

    forgo vaccination entirely. The

    result? Though well inten-

    tioned, these owners may be

placing cats at far greater risk of

    acquiring a fatal infection than

any risk the vaccine poses. And

in the case of rabies, human

health is at risk as well.

    After your vaccinations,

    ask your veterinarian to

    point out where the injec-

    tions were placed and then

keep an eye on those sites. If

    you notice a firm, painless

    swelling located near a previ-

    ous vaccination site, contacts

    your veterinarian.

    Your local veterinarian

    can provide more information

    about vaccinations for your

    pet. What is given often

depends on the risk of specific

    diseases in your geographic

    area, your pets lifestyle and

    state laws.

    Protect your companion

    animals and yourself by paying

a visit to your local veterinar-

    ian and following the suggest-

    ed vaccination protocol.

    Tuesday night and you might

be able to stay at the office a lit-

tle later to work on a project or

catch up on work. Such sharing

    and scheduling can consider-

ably reduce the stress of jug-

gling a family and a career.

    Exercise daily. Juggling a

family and a career is often

stressful, and stress can have a

    very adverse effect on your

    health. Women with high

stress levels are more likely to

    suffer from depression, anxiety

    and cardiovascular disease. But

    the American Psychological

    Association notes the positive

impact of exercise as a means to

    alleviating stress, citing studies

    that have shown that physical-

    ly active people have lower

    rates of anxiety and depression

    than people who are sedentary.

    Its easy to become irritable

    when stressed, and no mother

wants to be irritable in the pres-

    ence of her children.

    Incorporating exercise into

your daily routine is a great way

to alleviate the stress of jug-

gling a family and a career, and

    you can even incorporate your

    family into your

    exercise routine,

    going for

    nightly walks

    after dinner

    or playing

    with your

    children in

    the yard.

    Stay

    involved with your

    childs school. Many

    mothers find staying active

with their childrens school is a

    great opportunity

    for them to bond

    with their kids

    and keep

    abreast of

    Have you ever won-

    dered why many of

    the most beautiful

plants we see in New Jersey

only last a few weeks out of

the year? Why is it that cer-

    tain garden vegetables are

only in season for a specific

part of the year? The reason is

    that these plants are annuals.

    Strictly speaking, an

annual plant is one that com-

    pletes its growing cycle in

the course of a single growing

    season. The plant grows from

    a seed, blooms and pro-

    duces seed all within one

    season. In other words,

annuals pack a lot of living

into a short span of time!

    Some annual plant life

cycles may occur in as little

    as one month, while some

    species last through several

    months.

    With spring in full

    swing, its time to begin

    thinking about annual

    planting. Take advantage

of this time to grow an

    edible garden! A large

    variety of food plants are

    either annual plants or

    grown in

    season, including virtually all

    domesticated grains. Corn,

    wheat, rice, lettuce, peas,

    watermelon and beans are all

    examples of annual food

    plants.

    Additionally, the

    vast majority of flow-

    ers are also consid-

    ered annual. They

    are incredibly versa-

    tile plants that are

    suitable for contain-

    ers, window boxes,

    flower-beds, and

    elsewhere. Dont let

    the season pass you

    by without having a

    set of beautiful annu-

    al flowers to adorn

    your home!

    Gro Rite Garden

    Center in Lincoln Park

    offers a wide variety of

    annual seeds and potted

    plants to make your gar-

    den functional and your

    yard beautiful. Experts are

    Spring has sprung for most

    areas of the country and

    the average homeowners

to-do list likely has its share

    of outdoor landscaping tasks

that need to be tackled. The

    right tools can make easier

    work of outdoor chores.

    A report from the

    Associated Landscape Con-

    tractors of America titled

    Economic Benefits of

    Landscape states that land-

scaping can add as much as 14

percent to the resale value of a

building and speed its sale by as

    much as 6 weeks. Homeowners

looking to sell their home or

    just improve its market value

    will want to consider landscap-

    ing a viable investment. A

    March 2003 article in Smart

    Money noted that homeowners

can expect to earn back 150

percent or more of their land-

    scape investment through the

value it brings to a property.

    Whatever the landscap-

ing project, the right tools will

make any task that much easi-

    er. There are certain items

    every homeowner should have

in his or her gardening arsenal.

    Soil cultivator: A multi-

    pronged tool that breaks up

clods of soil and grass to pro-

    vide easier planting.

    Various garden hoes: Hoes

can be used for breaking up soil,

    weeding, cultivating, aerating,

    and many other purposes.

    Spading fork: Another tool

    that loosens soil with straight

    tines that dig through dense

    soil.

    Shovel: A multipurpose shov-

el can dig through dirt, gravel

    and the like.

    Rake: A steel-pronged rake

will till soil and spread out

    mulch and other organic mat-

ter in planting beds. A flexible

    rake is good for collecting

    leaves and thatch.

    Edger: Available as manual or

    gas powered, an edger gives

planting beds and the edges of

    lawns a clean look.

    String trimmer: Weeds can

easily be trimmed with a string

    trimmer that can work around

    bushes and other hard-to-reach

    areas.

    Gloves: Avoid blisters and

    insect bites with durable gloves

    that protect the hands.

    Lawn mower: To maintain a

healthy lawn it will have to be

    trimmed to the correct height.

    A manual or powered lawn

    mower is the essential land-

    scapers tool.

    Collection bags/bins: To

    properly dispose of organic

    matter like leaves and branch-

es, it pays to have recyclable or

reusable bags on hand for trans-

    porting waste.

    Hoses: Drip irrigation hoses

    can deliver water right to

plants roots where they need it

    most. A regular nozzle-powered

hose can be used for cleaning

    and misting plants and sur-

    rounding hardscapes.

    Compost bin: Black gold is

    the ideal landscaping supple-

    ment. By creating compost

    from discarded food, a home-

    ornamental fountains and

    pond supplies. Gro-Rites

    landscaping division offers a

    vast selection of trees and

    evergreens to help residents

    build their landscapes.

    Theres even a full-service

    floral department with on-

    staff designers to assist with

    bridal, corporate events and

    special occasions. In an effort

    to provide a full-service

    experience, upon completion

    of a landscape job, Gro-Rite

    clients receive a floral

    arrangement from the floral

    department.

    Ken Vande Vrede is

    president and son of founders

    Dave and Gerda. Providing

    the best-possible customer

    experience is a key differen-

    tiator at Gro-Rite, he said.

    Customers repeatedly return

    for the level of knowledge

    and personal attention our

    staff members provide.

    What truly sets Gro-

    Rite apart from other nurs-

    eries is a commitment to

    innovation and new technol-

    ogy. Gro-Rite has adopted

    state-of-the-art hydroponic

    technology, which allows

    large quantities of lettuces,

    herbs and vegetables to grow

    in a clean, sustainable, bacte-

    ria-free environment. They

    utilize a natural growing

    environment for pesticide-

    free herbs and vegetables,

    and are hoping to meet

    USDA organic standards

    soon.

    Gro-Rites vision is pro-

    viding customers with locally

    grown, preservative-free

    foods and using hydroponic

    technology will also allow

    them to do that. Hydropo-

nics is a soil-less method of

    growing plants that uses a

    combination of mineral

    nutrient solutions and water.

    Contrary to popular belief,

soil is not essential to the

growth of plants, but is mere-

ly a holding area for neces-

    sary mineral nutrients that,

    when dissolved in water, are

    absorbed by plant roots.

    Through the use of less

    water and space to produce

    herbs and greens, hydroponic

farming is a 100 percent nat-

    ural and sustainable growing

    method that dramatically

    reduces our carbon footprint.

    Through hydroponic

    farming, Gro-Rite will be the

    only greenhouse in 2013 that

    provides year-round, pick-

    your-own locally grown pro-

    duce.

    For nearly four decades,

    the Vande Vrede family has

    owned and operated Gro-

    Rite Greenhouse and Garden

    Center at 30 Hillview Road

    in Lincoln Park. Gro-Rite is

    opened 9am5pm Monday

    Whether shes still

    hard at work rais-

    ing children or her

kids have grown up and now

    have children of their own,

    Mom deserves our best efforts

    come Mothers Day. And while

    traditional gifts like flowers and

    chocolate might make for

    thoughtful Mothers Day gifts,

those who want to go the extra

mile for Mom this year can

    consider the following unique

    gift ideas.

    Concert tickets: Many

adults recall the days of their

    youth when Mom would relax

while listening to some of her

favorite music on a lazy summer

    afternoon. Why not take a

    stroll down Memory Lane and

take Mom to see one of her

favorite acts in concert? Even if

    you have outgrown Moms

    musical tastes, she will still

    appreciate the chance to spend

an evening out on the town

    with her kids and some

    good music.

    Theater tickets: If

Mom is a fan of live the-

    ater then nothing will

    elicit a bigger smile than

    tickets to a Broadway

    show she has had her

eyes on. If Broadway is a bit too

far for you to travel, do your

    homework and find a travel-

    ing production of a former

    Broadway show. Such produc-

tions often feature many of the

same actors who made the play

    famous on Broadway so youre

still bound to see an unforget-

    table show Mom will love.

    Parts unknown: Moms

who love to travel and experi-

    ence other cultures would cer-

    tainly appreciate a trip abroad

or a domestic getaway to a

region of the country they have

    yet to explore. Before booking

any such trips, speak to your

Mom and ask if theres any-

where in particular shed like to

go. Such trips can be expen-

sive, so adults might want to

    speak to their siblings and

    finance such an excursion

    together.

    Spa treatment: If Mom is

still as active as ever, then a day

of pampering at a nearby spa is

sure to please. Many luxury spas

    offer packages, especially

    around Mothers Day, that

    make a full-on spa treatment a

    more affordable gift. Men and

    women can even accompany

Mom on her trip and reap the

    rewards of being such a

    thoughtful son or daughter.

Unique gift ideas for Mothers Day

Breakfast in bed is one of

    the staples of Mothers

    Day celebrations.

    Pancakes are an ideal break-

fast to serve Mom. Easily cre-

    ated, pancakes can be made

    with just a few ingredients

    that are usually kitchen sta-

    ples. Young children should be

    supervised if helping with the

    preparation of breakfast.

    Easy Pancakes

    112 cups all-purpose flour

    312 teaspoons baking powder

    1 teaspoon salt

    1 tablespoon white sugar

    114 cups milk

    1 egg

    3 tablespoons butter, melted

    Strawberries and powdered

    sugar, for garnish

    1. Sift dry ingredients togeth-

    er then add the wet

    ingredients. Mix un-

    til just incorporated

    and let stand 5 min-

    utes.

    2. Prepare a griddle or

    flat skillet by heating

    over medium-high

    heat and greasing

    with butter or non-

    stick cooking spray.

    3. Spoon about 1/4

    cup of batter onto

    griddle for each pan-

    cake. Wait until bub-

    bles form in the cen-

ter and then flip. Let cook on

    other side until golden

    brown, then remove.

    4. Repeat until pancake bat-

    ter is done.

    5. Cut a small cleft into the

    top of sliced strawberries to

    make them look like hearts

    and garnish the plate with

    powdered sugar.

    owner can generate the prime

    fertilizer needed to keep plants

    healthy.

    Wheelbarrow: Transporting

gravel, rocks, mulch, shrubbery, and many other garden essen-

tials is made easier with the

help of a wheelbarrow or a gar-

    den cart.

    Branch pruner: A durable

    branch trimmer/pruner can cut

    through thick or thin branches

and keep landscape items tidy.Pruning also helps promote

    growth of many flowers and

    shrubs.

    Overhead pruner: Errant

    branches in hard-to-reach

areas can be trimmed with an

    overhead pruner with an

    extendable arm.Depending on specific

    interests, homeowners can stock

    up on trowels, bulb planters,

chain saws and other items that

will get jobs done around the

    exterior of the home.

Question: Why doesone need life insur-ance and when is

    best to invest in it?

    Answer: Life insurance is a

vehicle that will aid in ensur-

ing that loved ones left behind

in the event of an untimely

    death are able to continue

their financial lives and alsotakes care of final expenses for

    the dearly departed.

    Of all the insurance

    products that are offered by

    the multitude of insurance

    companies in this country, life

    insurance is the only product

    that is not speculative. Auto,

    homeowners, motorcycle,

    business, flood and some other

types of insurance are all in

    place just in case something

    happens. Life insurance is the

only one that has a guarantee,

as there is one guarantee from

the day we are born. A whole

    life policy is assurance that

expenses and loved ones willbe left financially whole.

    As there are also term

    policies that offer more afford-

    able premiums, these policies

can be converted to whole life

at a later date, prior to policy

    expiration, in case it appears

the owner will out-live a term.

    It can be converted without

    new medical exams or under-

    writing. The whole policy

would simply be rated at the

current rate at the time of

    conversion.

    The best time to invest

in a whole life policy is in your

    younger years, simply due to

the minimal risk youthfulnesspresents. Term policies are

best for those who arent yet

able to afford whole life pre-

    miums, new homeowners for

the term of the mortgage, and

other debt that may have a

10-year range to be paid off,

    like wedding expenses.

legacy you build is but a con-tact point away. Reach out to

    and decisively. You will also

discourage fraud by showingthat actions have conse-

    quences.

    4.Dont become complacent.

Even if no fraud is detected

    after an initial sweep, you

    must remain vigilant.

    Continue to adhere to the

    procedures youve estab-

    lished. Also, make sure that

    you follow through on any

    unresolved issues to theircompletion.

    5.Rely on your professional

    advisors. For instance, an

    attorneys services may be

    required if you decide to

    seek legal damages, while

    an accountant can help

    implement and update

    internal controls.

    Of course, there are no

guarantees, but these fiveproactive steps should, at

    the very least, minimize

    risks to your company.

to be a chaperone on one or

two class trips per year. Suchevents are typically scheduled

    months in advance, so you

    should have ample time to

arrange a break from the office

    without neglecting your profes-

    sional responsibilities.

    Take advantage of work-

    from-home policies. As tech-

    nology has advanced, many

    companies have become

    much more lenient with

    regard to employees working

from home. If your companyallows you to work from

home, even if its only once

    per week, then take advantage

of that offer. This can provide

more time with your kids, it

will likely save you money on

    childcare, and you are certain

    to appreciate the opportunity

    to skip your daily commute,

even if it is only once a week

or a couple of times per

    month.

Plan ahead. Lookingahead is another way to make

juggling a family and a career

    easier. Plan meals in advance

    to cut down on preparation

time when its your night to

    cook. This can involve plac-

ing foods in a slow cooker in

    the morning or preparing part

of the meal in advance so its

ready to go in the oven the

    moment you arrive home.

    Another way to plan

ahead is to look at kids schoolschedules and plan trips dur-

    ing the school year when

school wont be in session. A

    three-day weekend is a perfect

    opportunity to plan a getaway

to a nearby locale where the

    whole family can relax and

    reconnect without the pres-

    sures of daily life.

    Juggling a family and

career is not always easy, but

    there are ways that todays

    mothers can raise a happy

family and still have a success-

    ful career.

Chelsie, our first child, to the

office every day; when shebecame mobile; we expanded

our office to include a nursery

for her and her new brother,

    Zachary, nearly four years

later. When Zac grew a little

    lonely, Jack Benny was born

in 1998 and we added an addi-

    tion to our newly acquired

home so I could bring the

office into the house to con-

tinue working with my wifeand life partner every day. Two

years later, Jack wanted a little

    brother to play with, and

Sammy showed up to be his

    little buddy!

    Terry and I continued to

    work together every day, help-

    ing the community with their

    retirement and estate-plan-

ning needs. We are proud that

we have been able to build ourfamily and family business

    simultaneously over these past

29 years. I did the marriage

    calculation to determine that

    based on the comparison to

    what Ill call normally mar-

    ried couples if you count

up all of the hours we have

    spent together everyday, we

    have been married about four

times longer than other cou-ples of the same vintage. 29

    years together, multiplied by

    four, equals 116 years. So

there you have it folks, Ive

    been married to the sexiest

    and most remarkable woman

in the world for 116 years! She

has let me pursue my goals,

    dreams and ambitions, and

not only stood by my side with

constant and never-endingsupport, but was an active par-

ticipant in all of them with

    great expense to her individ-

ual goals and dreams, as well. I

    am convinced that the great-

est force in business is a hus-

    band and wife working

    together side-by-side with a

    common goal and objective.

    They are powerful enough to

    overcome a major recession,

the worst stock market crashesin the nations history and the

    worst real estate market

    decline. Though President

    Obama recently stated that

    we didnt build our businesses

ourselves, I beg to differ! Not

only did we build it ourselves,

but we built it with American

    values, American pride and

    American ingenuity.

Im not afraid to say I

love my wife and I would behere neither financially nor

physically if she were not by

    my side every day especial-

    ly when I underwent heart-

    bypass surgery and suffered 10

    strokes and other complica-

    tions, resulting in a 43-day

    hospital stay.

    Yes, there was a two-

week period of time when we

were not together every day. I

contracted an infection dur-ing my hospital stay and she,

being by my side for 19 days

    straight, caught the same

    infection, resulting in hospi-

talization for the next 14 days

    in a separate hospital. Our

daughter had to be the advo-

cate for two parents in two dif-

    ferent hospitals at the same

    time, while in grad-school and

    working two part-time jobs.

She also had to be the surro-gate mom for her three

    younger brothers. I guess its

true when they say the apple

doesnt fall far from the tree!

    After completing her MS

    in education, Chelsie is now

    the director of Brainy-Acts, a

    high-tech and progressive new

    tutoring and educational cen-

    ter, located adjacent to the

    National Headquarters of

American Prosperity Group at901 Route 23 South in
