Grandparents’ Day Students in the Junior School at both campuses were asked to take home an invitation last week to pass on to their Grandparents for the College’s annual Grandparents’ Day, which will take place on Tuesday, 2 April. Recent editions of the newsletter also have contained information about the day and I hope that we will see lots of Grandparents at the College on the day.

A special assembly will be conducted at both campuses welcoming our visitors, followed by an opportunity for them to visit the classrooms of their grandchildren and see some displays of their work, and finally for grandparents to enjoy a cup of tea and some refreshments.

It is fantastic to see the special bond between students and their grandparents or other special people in action each year during Grandparents’ Day. It is obvious our Junior School students take great pride in having their special visitors with them on this occasion and I know, from talking with our visitors, that they enjoy

the opportunity to get an update on the progress of their grandchildren and to see where they attend school.

Grandparents’ Day is from 9-11am at the Albury campus and from 1:30-3pm at the Wodonga campus. I look forward to welcoming lots of special visitors to the College during these times!

Students’ Charitable Works Recently the College Prefects and members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) have quietly committed themselves to a number of charitable works. The College promotes among its students the importance of service leadership, as well as social justice and outreach. This week at the Albury campus a “Hero Day” was held to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal. The event was very well organised and run by the students. At the end of the day, they managed to raise almost $1000 for the appeal – well done!

The Prefects are also promoting among all students an Easter Egg Appeal to support local families who may not be able to afford to purchase Easter eggs for their children. All students have been encouraged to bring in one Easter egg to contribute to the collection and then the eggs will be distributed to families via the three local Anglican parishes. This is a tremendous initiative and I hope all students will get behind it next week as we prepare for Easter!

At a recent Prefects’ meetings, it was decided that from Term 2, they will organise a collection of non-perishable food items to distribute to families in need via Anglicare. I think the Prefects referred to this initiative as their ‘Ute Full of Food’ project and I commend them for their eagerness to contribute something meaningful to those in less fortunate circumstances.

Last weekend, a number of Prefects and Year 12 students gave up part of their Saturday to collect for the Red Shield Appeal in Albury central. Again, I am very impressed with the willingness of these senior students to reach out and do something practical to support various charities in the local and broader communities.

It is worth noting that each year our Year 11 students enter a team into the Cancer

Page 3: 22 March 2013 - s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com Relay for Life. ... All of these examples speak very clearly of the genuine commitment ... so that parents are not continually being

Council’s Relay for Life. This great event provides the community with a wonderful opportunity to remember those who have battled cancer and also the chance to raise money for cancer research, education and prevention. Over the last three years, the Year 11 teams from Trinity have raised more than $20,000, which is a wonderful achievement!

All of these examples speak very clearly of the genuine commitment that so many Trinity students show to others; in reaching out to those in need and contributing in meaningful ways to supporting various worthwhile causes and charities.

Well done to all involved! When I take the time to reflect on these aspects of College life, I am overwhelmed with pride.

P&F Family Fun Day This Sunday, 24 March, the College’s Parents & Friends is running a Family Fun Day at our Wodonga campus from 10-2pm.

There are lots of fun activities planned for kids of all ages and I hope that Trinity families will be able to find time to come along and join in some of the fun! Please see the flyer included in this newsletter for further details.

Many thanks to those on the P&F Executive who have contributed to the organisation of this event, especially Raelene Weissel, Kaylene Kurtzer, Karen Braun and Susan Collins.

Year 12 Exams Our Year 12 students commence their half-yearly examinations today, Friday 22 March. These exams are an important part of their formal assessment and I know that teachers involved with the Year 12 students have been pleased with how they have commenced the year in class and in study periods in the Library.

I take this opportunity to wish all of our Year 12 students the best of luck as they undertake and complete the exams over the next week.

I would ask students to be mindful of the examination period (Friday, 22 to Thursday, 28 March) and to keep the noise to a minimum during the day, particularly near English Room 1 and 2 and Art Room 2, as all of the examinations will take place in these rooms.

Academic competitions now open Student academic competitions are now open. The list for nominations forms part of this newsletter. To enter you need to fill in the nomination form and return the form (without payment) to your child’s Pastoral Care Tutor/Classroom Teacher. The entry amounts will be included as part of your Term Two Student Accounts.

All students in Years 8 and 10 will be entered as part of the English, Mathematics and Science competitions, there is no need for students in these year levels to nominate using the nomination form. If students in Years 8 and 10 wish to enter other competitions, then they must enter as per the instructions above.

These competitions are for students in Years 3 through to 12. Please check carefully that the age group for the competition is appropriate for your child. The nomination form should be returned with the student’s name and year group by Thursday 4 April. As these competitions have strict rules associated with closing dates, no nominations will be accepted after this date.

Co-curricular Activities: Trinity offers an extensive co-curricular program and students are encouraged to engage in one or many of the different activities available. The list of activities is now available on the College website. It outlines the activity, when it takes place and the member of staff who organises that particular activity.

A co-curricular activity is one which occurs outside school hours or outside academic time. It also will fall under one of the following four defined areas:

i. Music ii. Sport iii. Creative and Spoken Arts iv. Leadership and Service

All staffmembers are committed to being involved in an area of interest to enhance the opportunities for our students. It is an important part of the holistic education we offer at Trinity and gives students a chance to meet other students, be involved and represent their school while learning many worthwhile skills that are not always covered within the classroom.

It’s easy to become consumed with getting stuff, the latest, coolest, trendiest things. Or our image: Let’s spruce ourselves up and look the part, life’s for living – now!

Life can easily become all about here and now, with no thought about what’s happening next. But what is next? What’s happening when the party’s over? Is there another one? Where are we going when this life ends?

It is said that the average body has enough phosphorus to make 2200 match heads, enough sugar to go into 60 cubes, enough salt to fill 20 spoons and enough iron to make about $10 worth of nails. The rest is just dust and water. When we pamper the part of us that’s on the surface and neglect the fact there’s much more to us than skin and muscles, it is no wonder God questions us.

No one can guarantee when they will die, only that they definitely will. So take note and take care of your whole being, because it is all intertwined – soul and body – and if you’re part of God’s family, it’s destined for something much bigger and better than just life here and now.

Senior School News

On behalf of the Red Cross I would like to publicly thank the following Year 12 students who gave up their time at the weekend to assist the Red Cross Calling campaign.

The students turned up on Saturday in their College uniform at Thurgoona Plaza and Dean Street to rattle tins. Well done to Michaela Russell-Larcombe, Chloe Gear, Isaac Hayes, Linc Chapman, Isobel May, Claire Whitting, Annie Petts, Katie Gallo, Olivia Morey and Maddison Stein for supporting the local community.

The SRC at the College along with Mrs Haymes and Ms Carroll are also to be congratulated on the ‘Hero Day’ they organised this week. A significant amount was raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Well done to all students who participated and made a donation to the appeal.

Unfortunately, the College is not able to support the large number of charities that request our assistance. Each year we plan to support one charity each term so that parents are not continually being asked to make donations. However, I would like to congratulate Nick Hynes of Year 12 and Luke McCaughey of Year 8 who, outside the College, raised funds for and participated in the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Well done, boys!

At last Hoffman have won an event in the Senior School! As a staff member who wears his yellow shirt to each event in anticipation of a Hoffman win I have continually been disappointed.

After 10 years in Hoffman it was great to see the level of participation at the Athletics Carnival last week and our first win. I would like also to congratulate students in other houses and apologise that I wasn’t cheering quite as loudly for you!

Scholastic Book Fair This week students have started to have a look at the books on display at the Scholastic Book Fair. Students will be given a ‘Wish List’ form by their teachers for them to select some books they might like to purchase. Already the students have enjoyed the opportunity to browse over the range of books on offer. The Book Fair runs from Monday, 18 March until Tuesday, 2 April.

Parents can come and look at the display in the morning before school starts and make purchases through Mrs Phillips in the front office.

Grandparents’ Day Grandparent’s Day is coming around quickly again. The students always look forward to this important calendar event, where they can show their grandparents or special guests the work they do in the classroom. Recently all students were given a letter asking for families to reply with the number of guests that may be attending. Can I ask families to please return these forms so we can organise afternoon tea for the day.

Easter Hat Parade This year the students again will be participating in an Easter Hat Parade. This event will be on Thursday, 28 March at 10.30am in the Wodonga campus Multi-purpose area. Students will be making hats during this week to present on the day. Students wishing to make an Easter hat at home for presentation on the day are more than welcome to do so.

Early dismissal On Thursday, 28 March, the Wodonga campus students will be dismissed at 2.10pm. This is to allow our bus travellers to catch their buses as the Government schools finish up for Term 1 on this day and are traditionally dismissed one hour earlier than normal. Trinity’s final day for Term 1 is on Friday, 12 April, where students will be dismissed at the normal time of 3.10pm.

Girls’ Talk Workshop On Friday, 5 April, girls in Years 4, 5 and 6 from both Trinity campuses will be attending a workshop called ‘Girls Talk’ organised by the Director of Pastoral Care and assisted by a group of our Senior School Leaders.

During this workshop, the girls from Year 11 will conduct small group sessions with the Junior School girls.

The Years 4, 5 and 6 girls will be challenged to reflect on the nature of their friendships at school, as this can be the key to surviving adolescence. They will

discuss ways to develop as strong, confident girls who will become good friends and valued classmates during this time.

The ebbs and flows of their friendships can also be the biggest threat to girls’ happiness and by participating in guided mentoring, some very important issues will be discussed.

All the activities will be supervised by teachers involved in the process. Some of the topics to be covered include:

• Friendships • Teasing

• Gossip • Roles girls play

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the College.

Growing Boys into Good Men – Years 3 to 6 Following the great success of last year’s Growing Boys in to Good Men activities afternoon I am delighted to announce that this year’s boys’ afternoon will be held at the Albury campus after school on Thursday, 4 April.

As we are aware growing boys into good men in today’s world is a greater challenge than ever. The afternoon focuses on ways/strategies to help boys develop into healthy men who will contribute to building a strong community.

In this regard, the College is planning the evening for the Years 3 to 6 boys to get together with a trusted male role model (mentor) for activities and fun. There will be opportunities for the boys to learn integrity, persistence, accountability, resilience, getting along, empathy and respect from their mentor through the various activities to promote and demonstrate what is to be a young male in the 21st Century. Trinity teachers will lead the activities.

We encourage all our Years 3 to 6 boys to participate. To do so, you and your son will need to choose a male mentor to engage with him and participate in the activities. Your son’s mentor could be his father/grandfather/close family friend etc. Should you have difficulty arranging for a mentor the College may be able to assist. Please let us know via a note on the permission slip (below).

The evening starts at 4pm and concludes with a sausage sizzle about 7pm. Afternoon tea also will be provided for any boy who will remain at school prior to the 4pm start. Students will need to wear their College Sports Uniform.

Please complete the permission slip and return it to Mr O’Loan by 15 March.

Families will soon receive invoices for their fees for the 2013 season; please assist by paying these at the College office promptly. A reminder for any student who would like to join a College team for the term 2 and 3 season to let me know.

Also I am wanting to hear from any adults who wish to assist by being involved with the establishment of the Trinity Basketball Club committee.

We are also currently seeking support of any local businesses who would like the opportunity to sponsor either all our boys or girls team, if interested please let me know.
