Vatican City — Christian conversion does not entail accusing others, but is shamefully recognizing and sincerely repenting one's own sins, Pope Francis said. "A sign that a person, that a Christian, does not know how to blame oneself is when they are used to accusing others, to badmouth others, to stick their noses in other people's lives. It's a bad sign. Do I do this? It is a good question for getting to the ‘heart" of things, he said in his morning homily Sept. 6, in the Guest House chapel where he resides. The pope reflected on the day's Gospel reading of the call of Simon Peter, the fisherman (Lk 5:1-11). Peter was astonished to see the huge number of fish that was caught after Jesus told him to lower the nets into deep water even though they spent a whole night catching nothing. The amazing bounty led Peter to throw himself before Jesus and say, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man." "This is Peter's first decisive step" on the path of being a disciple of Christ — being able to accuse himself of being a sinner, Pope Francis said."And this is also the first step for each of us if one wants to go forward" spiritually, and in following and serving Christ. "Without accusing oneself, one cannot walk in the Christian life," he said. But there is a danger, he said, that people may proclaim themselves "a sinner" superficially, much the same way people might declare themselves to be "human" or "an Italian citizen." Accusing oneself means feeling shame and misery deep inside one's heart, he said. This is the only way to make room in one's heart for Jesus and his salvation, he said. Jesus needs a sincere admission of sins because his gift and grace are not "cosmetic" in which one gets a whole new look with just "a couple of brushstrokes."

Often people go into a confessional as if it were going in "to put on makeup, get made-up a bit so as to come out beautiful," the pope said. The first step of conversion, the pope continued, is accusing oneself with shame and experiencing the astonishment of feeling saved by Christ.

"We must convert, we must do penance," he said, asking people to reflect on the temptation of accusing others.

JOURNEY OF FAITH is the name of the process we use at St. Andrew’s to draw people more

deeply into the mystery of Christ’s death & rising. For those who are not presently Catholic, JOF

is the pathway to the church’s Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

For those who are already Catholic, JOF can help broaden one’s perspective of what it means

to be an intentional disciple of Jesus Christ. Parishioners wishing to exercise their baptismal

mission to “Go Make Disciples” should spread the word.

Weekly Sessions resume

September 9th Sundays from 10:20 am – 11:30 am

We believe that families that worship together every Sunday (barring illness or travel) and see to it that children participate regularly in discipleship formation classes will experience rewarding benefits. Classes are for all children in grades K-12 and registration is required for all those preparing for sacraments. Families that pray, worship, and learn together stay together.

HEALING PRAYER MINISTRY

Since praying for healing was a core element of the ministry of Jesus, it must also be a vital part of parish ministry as well. The healing power of God is available to the Church through all the sacraments but especially through the Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Anointing of the Sick. As a worshipping community we intercede during Mass for the inform and homebound and we are invited to pray for them throughout the week. Beginning in March, we began a Healing Prayer Ministry for members of the parish willing to invite others to pray with, for, and over them. This ministry will be available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel following the Saturday evening Mass on the third weekend of each month.

Have you or someone you know been facing difficulties? Have you ever wished just to be touched by the Lord himself and be healed like the many people we read about in the new Testament? Did you know that St. Paul taught that the Holy Spirit imparts a special gift of healing to individuals willing to use it in the service of others? There are such individuals right here at St. Andrew’s and they are ready and willing to offer healing prayer to all who seek it. Keep in mind that God does not always will a physical healing, but may choose to bestow a spiritual or emotional healing.
