Whenyouthinkaboutgrowingfruittreesornuttrees,youprobablythinkaboutgoingouttoanursery,buyingapottedtree,poppingitinyouryard,takingcareofitforafewyears,andthenhopefullygettingaharvest.Chancesare,you'renotthinkingofgrowingfruitandnuttreesfromseed.
Whenyoumentionthatyouwanttogrowthemfromseed,peopletreatyouweirdly.Maybewhenyouwereyoungandyou'relike,"Iwanttostartsomeappletrees.Iwanttostartanavocado."Theysay,"That'sgoingtotakeforever.It'sgoingtobeterriblefruit."Yougetthatsortofaresponse,right?You'veheardthatbefore,youmayhaveevensaidthatbefore.
Allthejoyandwonderofstartingatreefromseed,startingagigantictree,likethismangotreerightbesideme,fromaseed,andhavingittoweruptoheaven,yeah,youdon'tgetthatbecauseittakestoolongandit'sgoingtobenasty.Well,we'regoingtodealwiththosetwoobjections,andhopefullyaftertoday'spresentation,you'regoingtowanttostartyourownfruitandnuttreesfromseed,andyou'regoingtogetallexcited,andyou'regoingtogorightoutinyouryardandyou'regoingtostartplantingstuff.
First,thetwoobjections.Objectionnumberone,ittakestoolong.Everybodysaysittakestoolong.Doyouexpecttodiewithinthenextyearortwo?Whataboutwithinthenextfiveyears?Therearefruittreesthatwillproducefromseedinayearortwo.Maybethey'renot

technicallytrees,thingslikepapaya,orbananas,orwhatever,butyougettheidea.Therearethingsthatgoreallyfast,andwe'regoingtocoversomeofthem.Iactuallyhadapeachtreeproducein18monthsfromseed,actuallymakeacoupleofpeaches,whichiswayoutsideoftheordinary,butitdoesn'tmeanthatitdoesn'thappen.
Now,ifeveryyearyou'reputtingingardens,whynotstartafewfruittreesatthesametime?BackwhenIwas15,Iplantedacoconutinmyparents'backyard,downinFortLauderdale.Ithadsproutedanditwasaboutthattall,andIstuckitintheground,andnowthere'sabeautifultoweringcoconutpalm,whichisquiteafewyearsolderthan15atthispoint.It'sabeautiful,talltree,anditwouldn'tbethere.EverytimeIgoandvisitmyparents'house,IlookupandIseethistreeandIgo,"Wow,Ican'tbelieveIplantedthat."Yougetachancetoinvestinthefuturebyplantingtreesfromseed,andalotofthemdon'ttakeaslongasyoumightthink,andtherearealsowaystogetaroundittakingsolong,suchasgrafting.
Whichbringsmetopointnumbertwo,"It'sgoingtobenasty.Oh,it'sgoingtobeterrible.Ifyouplantappleseeds,you'regoingtogetahorribleapple.Ifyouplantthatorangeseed,you'regoingtogetahorribleorange."Thatisoftennotthecase.Asamatteroffact,mostofthevarietiesthatyouhavetoday,thatyou'veseentoday,alotofthemarejustaccidental.Somebodythrewseedsoutintheirbackyardandtheygrewthistree,thattree,andtheothertree,andtheycrossed,andthegeneticvariationtakesplace,andyougetsomethingdifferent.IfyouwantexactlyaRedDeliciousapple,whichIdon'tknowwhyanybodyintheirrightmindwould,youcangoandbuyagraftedRedDeliciousapple.EverysingleRedDeliciousapplethat'sbeengraftedisexactlyacloneofeveryotherone.
Theystartatreefromseed,theyhavealittlerootstockgoing.Theymayevenclonallypropagateit,butoftenyouhaveaseedlingrootstock,andthenontopofit,yougraftavariety.Ifthismangoherewas,sayasaleonmango,andIhadamangoseedlinginmyyard,Icouldtakealittlepieceofthistree,cutitin,makealittlegraft,anditwouldbeaSaleonmangofromthatgraftpointupwards,andit

wouldalwaysbearthesameSaleonmangoesthateveryotherSaleonmangotreebears.
Youcangraftitifitturnsoutbadly,butI'vegrownpeachesfromseed,andIhadoveradozenseedlingpeachesthatIgavetofriends.Ihadafewinmyyard.Everysingleoneofthemboredeliciouspeaches,andtheyweren'tallthesame.Someofthemweresmall,red,someofthembloomedatslightlydifferenttimes,buttheywerealldeliciouspeaches.
I'vegotallkindsofstoriespeoplehavesentmeinonmywebsite,oftreesthattheystartedfromseed,avocados,andgrapefruit,andlemons,andallkindsofthingsthatboredelicious,wonderfulfruit.Ifitdoesn'tbearwhatyouwant,youcanalwaysjustgraftontopofit.Ifitdoesbearsomethingthattastesgood,youcannameitafteryourself,becausethat'savarietynobodyelsehas.
Now,let'sjumpintothevarietiesthatyoucanplantandhowtodothem.I'vegot21amazingtreesthatyoucangrowfromseedyourownself.Applesareoneofthefirstthingsthateverykidwantstogrow,"CanIplanttheseseeds?Willtheygrow?"Thenwetellthem,"No,theywon'tgrow.Iftheydogrow,they'regoingtobeawful."Butyoucangrowapplesfromseed,andyouwilloftengetdecentapples.Alotofthesettlersdidthat.ThinkofJohnnyAppleseed,right?
Withapplesthough,there'salittletricktogettingtheseedstogerminate,andthatistheyneedsomechillingfirst.Anapplefallstothegroundinsummerorfall,getsburiedunderleaves,itrotsintotheground.Maybesomebodythrowsthecoreoverthefenceorwhateverelse.Thenthoselittleseedsstarttochill.Iftheysproutedrightawaywhentheyhittheground,theywouldfreezetodeathinthewinter.Theywouldn'thavetimetogetestablished.Sinceit'sacoldclimatetree,itneedsalittlebitofchillhoursfirst,whichiscalledstratification.
Tostratifyappleseeds,yougetthelittleseedsoutofthecore,puttheminalittlebitofslightlymoistpottingsoil,youputtheminalittlebaggy,sticktheminthefridge,andjustwaitthreetofour

monthsorso.They'lljuststartputtingrootsoutrightthereinyourrefrigerator.It'samazing,you'llseelittlerootscomingout.It'slikethey'retryingtorootintotheground.Theythinkit'swinter,they'regettingreadytosproutinthespring.
Now,assoonasyoutakethoseoutandputtheminpots,theyoftenwillstickuptheirleavesandthey'llbegrowing,andyouwillhavelittleappletrees.Applestakealittlebitoftimetoproducefruitfromseed,we'retalkingsixtotenyearsforaseedling,isprettymuchnormal.Thegoodnewsonthatisthatyoucangraftontothemandtheywillproducealotquicker,oryoucanjustwaitandseewhattheyturninto.You'regoingtohaveyourownvarietyifyoudon'tgraft.
Ifyoudowanttograftandchangeit,andyourneighborhasacoolappletree,youcantakealittlepieceoffandgraftitinthespring.Theygraftsoeasily,youcanalmostjustchopachunkoffandchopachunkoff,andstickittogether,whack,thereyougo,andittakes.Applesaresuper,supereasy,andthey'relikethebeginner'sgraftingtree.Easytostartfromseed,poptheminthefridge,givethemalittlebitoftime,theygrowroots,stickthemintheground,itwillgrowatop.Thensixtotenyears,goodjobJohnnyAppleseed.
Treenumbertwoisavocados.Avocadosareoneofthosebeginnerfruits,right?Haveyoueverseenthatthingwhereyoutakeanavocadopit,yousticksometoothpicksinit,yoususpenditinajar,youputsomewaterupthere,andthenovertimeitstartstoputrootsdown,anditputsashootup,andthenyouplantitanditdied?Mygrandmadidthatoverandoveragain.Herbackyardwaslikethegraveyardofavocadoseedlings.Shewouldsticktheminthelittlethings,andthenshewouldgoplantthemoutintheyard,andthentheywoulddie,becausesheactuallywouldn'twaterthemoncetheywentoutthere.Ireallymissyou,grandma.Iwishyoucouldwatchthis,justsoyoucouldgetonmycase.
Avocadosareactuallyreallyeasytostart.Youtakethepitoutofafreshavocado,andIdon'tlikedoingthewholetoothpickthinganymore.Thatwasfineinthepast,butsometimestheyrot,

sometimestheydon'ttake.Ioftenhaveafewavocadosatatime.WhatIdoisIjusttakealittleflatofsoil,Istickthelittleavocadopitsinthere.Iburythem,andthentheyjustpopup.Astheypopup,IpullthemoutandItransplantthemtotheirownpots,orputthemintheyard.Theonlythingisyouhavetoremembertowaterthem.
Onemorething,avocadoscantakefivetothirteenyearstogrowfromapit.Bepatient.Unlessyou'relikemyfriendEddiefromPuertoRico,whojustthreatenedhistree.Hesaid,"I'mgoingtocutyoudown.I'mgoingtocutyouintopiecesunlessyoubearforme,okay?Idon'tlikeyoutakingupthespaceinmybackyard,allright?Ifyoukeeptakingthespaceupandyoudon'tmakemenofruit,I'mgoingtocutyourightdownandyou'regoingtodie."Guesswhat?Thenextyear,itfruited.
Ournexttreetostartfromseedisbananas.Nowyou'relike,"Waitaminute,there'stworeasonswhythat'scompletelyimpossible.Oneisabananaisnotreallyatree."Okay,Iknowthat,buteverybodycallsitatree.Iknowit'slikeabigonion,okay?It'slikeabigonionthatmakesfruit.It'slikebigbulbsandstuff.Iknow,it'snotreallyatree,butwe'regoingtocallitatree,becauseitkindofactslikeatree,andit'ssortoflikeatree,andeverybodysaysit'satree.We'rejustgoingtogowiththat.Areyoudoinggoodorareyoudoingwell?
Theotherthingyou'regoingtosayis,"Waitaminute,bananashaveseeds?Arethoselittletinyblackspecksinside,whenyoupeelit,whenyoucutitinhalfandyouseethoselittleteenythings?"Yeah,that'sactuallytheremnantsofseeds.Withbananas,thereareonlysomeornamentalvarietiesthatwillstartfromseed.Theregularbananathatyougetinthesupermarket,theseedsarelonggone.Long,longago,peopleselectedouttheverybestvarieties,andthat'sonethatdoesn'thaveseedsinitlikebuckshot.Canyouimaginebitingintoabananaandgoing,andbreakingyourteethonalittleseed?Youdon'twantthat,andthevariouspeoplethatbredbananasovertheyears,whosenamesarelonglosttous,theyselectedoutthebuckshotseeds.

Ifyou'vegottheornamentalvarieties,likeMuseofValetina,there'sawholebunchofdifferentvarietiesthatactuallyhavetheseedsstillinthem.Peoplewillsay,"Oh,theytakeforevertogerminate.They'resohorriblyhard."I'vefoundoutthetricktoit.Thetrickisyougetthoselittleseeds,yougetyourornamentalbananafruit,andyouopenitup,it'sgotthelittlehardseedsinit.Cleanthemoff,getyourselfalittlefile,nickaholeineachoneofthem,ortakeapairofnailclippersandjustchewattheedgesuntilyounickahole.Soakthemovernight,maybeevensoakthemfortwodays,planttheminalittlebitofpottingsoilandputtheminawarmspot.Boom,afewweekslater,youhavebananas.Itdoesn'ttakethesixmonthsorayearthatyoumightreadonline.Nickthem,soakthem,plantthem,andyou'vegotlittlebabybananatreesyoucanputinyouryard,thoughthey'renotverygoodforeating.
Didyouknowthatcashewscomefromafruit?
Theydo.It'sareallyweirdlookingthing.Here'sapicture.Thebottompartiswherethecashewnutis.Theproblemisit'ssurroundedbyapoisonous,causticliquid,whichwillburnyou.Youcan'tjustgotothestoreandbuysomerawcashewsandthenturnaroundandplantthem.They'redead.They'relong,longdead.Youhavetoactuallygetacashewnutoffofaplantthatisrecent.
Iactuallywasgivenone,backwhenIwasintheUnitedStates.OneofmyfanssnucksomeinfromAsiainherdirtyclothing.Ihavereallygreatfans,butshebroughtmeacashew.Allyouhavetodois,ifyougetanactualcashewnut,isplantit,andyou'llgetcashewsinaboutfiveyears,maybeaslittleasthree.
Ournexttreefromseediscitrus,whichisnotreallyfair,becausecitrusisawholegroupofplants,wonderfultrees,butthey'reverysimilar.Thewayyoupropagatethemallisprettymuchthesame.ThisisaRubyRedgrapefruit,whichisgreenontheoutside,becauseIliveintheTropics,andyouneedacertainamountofchilltoactuallygettherightcolor.Wegetgreenones,butthisisactuallyright.

IfItaketheseseedsout,ifyoucutthroughseeds,getridofthose,andtakeoutsomeofthegoodseeds,andyoujusttakethese,andnowaproblemthatpeopleoftendo,amistaketheyoftenmakewithcitrus,istotaketheseseedsandthentreatthemliketheyweresunflowerseedsoranyothergardenseed.Theydrythemout,andwhenthey'regoodanddry,theygoaheadandplantthem.
Thisisatropicalplant,andtheseareactuallymadetosprout.Theyarenotmadetogointodormancyforanyperiodoftime.Theyaremadetogorighttothegroundandsprout.It'samistaketodrythemoutfirst.Don'tdothat.Justrinsethemoff,andtakethemandplantthemrightintheground.Usually,withinamonth,you'llhaveabunchoflittlecitrus.
Now,ifyouweregoingtogrowagrapefruitfromseed,chancesareit'sgoingtotakeeighttotenyearstofruit.That'salongtime.However,lemons,limes,calamondins,andprobablykumquatswillallgrow,andtheycanoftenfruitinaslittleastwotothreeyears,maybefourorfive.They'remuchfaster.Orangesandgrapefruitstakealongtime,they'rebiggertrees,andtheytaketheirsweettimegettingready,butsomeofthesmallercitruswillactuallyfruitquitequickly,andtheywillmakegoodfruitfromseed.You'llgetsomethingverysimilar,that'sgood.I'vehadalotofseedgrowncitrus,andit'sdelicious.
Youseethishere?Thisisalittlebabycoconut.Lookatthat,lookatthelittlerootcomingoutofthebottom.Seethat?Thatisalittlecoconutsprout,andthisislayingrighthere.Themommaiswayupthere.ItoldyouIplantedoneofthesebefore,andactuallyifyouliveintheTropics,coconutsareeverywhere,andyoucanoftenjustpickthemuprightofftheground.Here'sonerighthere,justlayingontheground,thatfelldownthehill,andit'llgrow.
Ifyouhaveadrycoconutandyouwanttogrowitintoatreelikethat,whatyoudoisyoujustlayitonthegroundsoitstayswetonthebottom,wateriteveryonceinawhile,anditwillsprout.Thenyouplantin,andinaboutsixyears,you'llbegettingsomecoconuts,maybeevensooner.

Youwanttomakesurethatyouhaveacoconutthathastheentirehuskonit.Ifyouhavejusttheinterior,itmaynotgrow.It'snotprotected.Youcanseetherootscomethroughthebottom.Thisparthereisdamp,andit'sprobablygoingtogetrottenalotquickerthanthetop.Thehuskismadetofloat.Theyfloatuponshorelines,theylayinthesand,theygethalfburied.Hopefully,alittlewaysuptheshorewheretheydon'tgetwashedoutagain.Theyputtherootsdown,theyputashootup,andnextthingyouknow,youhaveatropicalpostcard.Takeyourcoconut,putithalfwayintheground,getitwet,boom,you'regoingtohaveacoconuttree.
Ournextamazingtreeiscoffee,andit'sprobablythemostamazingtreeofall,becausewithoutit,Iwouldn'thaveenoughenergytodothisvideo.Coffeeisveryeasytogrowfromseed,butlikecitrus,it'satropical,soyoudon'twanttodrythoseseedsoutforverylong,andletthemgetold.Ifyougotothestoreandyoubuyyourselfabagofcoffeebeans,they'realmostcertainlynotgoingtosprout.
Someofmyreadershavetriedgrowinggreencoffeebeans,they'vetriedgrowingroastedcoffeebeans,andtheydon'tsprout.Theyjustdon'tsprout.Youhavetogetsomeseedrightfromthefruitandplantthem.Ifit'scoolorcold,they'renotgoingtowanttogrow.
WhatIwoulddo,whenIhadmyplantnursery,wasIhadabigpottedcoffeeinmygreenhouse,thatwouldfruiteveryfallandwinter.Iwouldgoandpickthoselittlebeans,splitthemopen,washthemofalittlebit,wasthelittleseedsontheinsideout,there'sacherrythathasbeansinside.You'rebasicallyjustsplittingthecherrypartup,takingthelittlebeansoutofthemiddle,washthemoff,sticktheminalittlepottingsoil,andthenIhadalittleheatingmat.Iputtheheatingmatunderneath,andthatkepttheminthe80s.Iwouldjustsprouttheminmyoffice,andtheywouldgrow.Inaboutamonthtotwomonths,Iwouldhavelotsoflittlecoffeeseedlings.Youjustplanttheminpots,don'tletthemfreeze,andyoucangetcoffeeinaslittleasthreeyears.
OneofthecoolestthingsIevergrewfromseedwasdatepalms.Iwentonapicnicwithmyfamilyonce,andIboughtaboxofCalifornia

dates.WeatethedatesandIsaid,"Kids,savetheseeds.Let'sseeifwecansproutthese."Wesavedtheseeds,wetookhomealittlenapkinfullofdateseeds.IwashedthemandIreadthattheydon'tlikeittoowet,andtheydon'tlikeitcoldatall.Theylikeithot.Remember,thisisanarid,warm,warmclimate,adeserttreemorethananythingelse.
WhatIdidwas,Igotalittlebitofsand.Isoakedthedateseeds,justtokindofwakethemup,andthenIplantedtheminsomeslightlymoistsand,andIputtheminalittlecontainerontopofthewaterheaterinmycloset.Outofapackageofdates,weprobablyhad20or30seedsthatwereintheplanter.Outofthose20to30seeds,Igotaboutsixlittlebabydatepalms.Couldn'tbelieveit,butitwasthecoolestthingever.
Thatishowyoudoit.Justputtheminsomething,justsoakthemonce,justtogetthemstarted.Puttheminalittlebitofslightlymoistmedium,stickthemontopofyourwaterheaterorsomeplacewarmandjustwait.Ithinkliterallytheytookliketwo,three,fourmonthsbeforetheyallsprouted,buttherestofthemthathadn'tsproutedatthatpoint,Isaid,"Okay,you'rejustdone."Theymaybewouldhavesprouted,butIwasdonewiththeexperiment.Itwasenough,Igotsomedates.IactuallyplantedtheminmyFloridayard.
Ournextamazingtreebearsthelargestfruitknowntoman,it'sthejackfruit.Fruitcanbeupto80pounds.It'sarelativeofmulberries,breadfruit,andfigs,whichmakesitkindofawesome.It'salsoveryeasytostartfromseed.Thejackfruitisabigoldfruitlikethis,andit'sgotafibrouswhiteinterior.Insideofthatarethesereallysweetbitsoffruit,andinsideeachofthoselittleerrols,isadeliciousseedthatyoucanboilandeat.However,ifyouwouldrathernotboilandeatit,butgrowyourselfanothertree,takeoneofthoseout.They'relikeabigbean,andplantthemrightaway.
They'rekindofsoft,they'renotahardshelledseed.Likealotoftropicalplants,youwanttoputitrightinthegroundrightaway.Youdon'twanttoletitsitanddryout.Afterafewweeks,thosethingsaregoingtodie.Youputitrightintoapot,andgiveyourselfapot

thathasadeepbottomtoit,becausetheymakeabigtaproot.Theydon'tliketransplantingverymuch.
Ifyouactuallyhavetheclimateforit,whatIwouldrecommendistodigyourselfalittlespotinyouryard,putsomerocksorsomethingaroundittomarkit,plantahandfulofjackfruitseeds.Maybestickfourorfiveinaholewithalittlebitofcompost.Youdon'tevenhavetohavecompost,butIcomposteverything.Waterthemwellandjustwatch.Inaboutamonth,you'llhavemultiplesproutsshowupthere.
Whentheygetalittlebitbigger,maybeaboutthistall,picktheverybestoneofthatbatchandcuttherestofthemdown,andletthatonebecomeyourjackfruittree.Jackfruitactuallygrowvery,veryfast.Youcanbearfruitinaboutfourtosixyears.
