My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
Let us today continue reflecting on the call all of us have to be Marital First Responders (this is our fourth installment, by the way — see previous bulletins for earlier installments). To review: we began by making the distinction between “hard” problems in marriage (the “Triple A”: Abuse, Affairs, Addictions) and “soft” problems (everything else and they are the most common reasons for divorce, e.g., problems like growing apart, money, sexual problems, parenting differences, arguing a lot, etc…).
Hard problems immediately threaten the marriage and so need immediate intervention and help, most of the time by professionally-trained counselors. Soft-problem marriages are not as immediately threatening but are the most common cause of divorce. These are also the most common avenues that help YOU BE A MARITIAL FIRST RESPONDER! So, some tips on being a GOOD marital first responder:
One of the first things to discern: Is divorce on the table? Is the person you are talking to about his/her difficult marriage hinting or openly talking about divorce? One spouse is usually leaning out, that is, pushing the idea of divorce, while the other spouse is leaning in, that is, wanting to work things out. So are you talking to the “leaning out” spouse? Has he/she told the other spouse yet? Or are you talking to the “leaning in” spouse, who is likely to have high anxiety at this moment?
Next, your job as a Marital First Responder is to be a good friend or family member, not a therapist; to listen and be supportive, not to take sides or figure out who is right and wrong; help people come to their own solutions, not to tell them what they should do, rather, perhaps even direct them to professional help as he/she confides in you; and hold hope for people and their marriage, not to pile on with more negativity (except in truly dangerous situations).
There is a lot of data compiled about how best to respond. First, understand what happens to you and in you when you get anxious, overinvolved or don’t know what else to say… RESET your “default” responses if they are not helpful! For example, here are some of the top unhelpful things reported by those who confide in others regarding their marriage:
“Mr./Ms. Fix-it” — too much advice, a lot of it not useful (e.g., “You should tell him he has to support you with his mother.”) “Talker” — talking too much about self (e.g., “When Harold and I went through this, we…”) “Side Taker” — too critical of the spouse (e.g., “What a jerk!”) “Underminer”—suggesting a break up (e.g., “I wouldn’t stay another day with a woman who cheated on me!”) “Judge” — too critical (e.g., “Whining isn’t going to solve your problem.”)
In our next installment, we’ll look at a few more common mistakes, and then look at how best to be helpful to those of our family and friends who are feeling a crisis in their marriage: in other words, how best to listen, to give emotional support, to give a helpful perspective, to understand what were/are their own contributors to their marital problem, to understand where their partner is coming from, etc.
Let us continue to grow into being the best Marital First Responders, opening our hearts to learn more and more about how to be the best marital responders we can be and God calls us to be! Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!!!

scriptures which tell us to lay hands on the sick, and that when prayer is said in faith the person will be healed. Our faith is the key!
Believe that before we receive healing prayer that God wants us healed, and God will ALWAYS heal us in some way.

Father Jim Curtin Fr. Jim Curtin has been the Pastor at St. Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport, IL for the past 20 years. Prior to coming to St. Dennis, he was the founding Pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville, IL. He was the Executive Director of the Joliet Marriage Encounter Program from 1974 - 1984. Fr. Jim has been involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal since 1974. He has conducted numerous retreats, seminars, and healing conferences throughout the years. In addition to healing seminars and retreats that are conducted by Fr. Jim Curtin, the St. Dennis Healing Ministry team, The Roamin Catholics, has over 40 people who have been trained to administer healing. Each Sunday during the year after the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Mass, healing team members are present to lay on hands and administer healing prayer. All are welcome. Private healing prayers sessions are also offered.

Calling all Knitters, Crocheters, Quilters, and Sewers!
We are starting a Prayer Blanket Ministry and are in need of volunteers. The blankets we make are intended to be lap blankets no more than 3’ by 4’. You can make the blankets on your own schedule. As you sew, we ask that you say prayers for the future recipient, for their peace and possible healing, and continue to hold them in your petitions. Upon completion, the blanket will be blessed by a priest. The Prayer Blanket is meant to bring relief and peace to the sick and suffering by letting the recipients know that they are not alone and that they are being covered in prayer and remembered by our faith community. As a recipient myself of a Prayer Blanket 11 years ago, I truly know the comforting feeling of being covered with prayer and that God was with me through some hard times. I still use my blanket. There are two ways you can help the Prayer Blanket Ministry. If you would like to make Prayer Blankets, you can start now! Upon completion, drop them off at the Parish Office. Remember, no larger than 3’ by 4’. Secondly, donations are needed and appreciated. NEW cotton fabric and NEW washable yarn can be dropped in the marked container in the St. Francis Room at the church entrance. Monetary donations can be dropped in the collection basket marked Prayer Blanket Ministry or sent to the Parish Office. If you would like a Prayer Blanket to give to someone who is seriously ill or undergoing surgery, contact Sue at ext. 314. A donation is appreciated. Please continue to pray for the sick of our parish and those suffering. “Meanwhile God worked extraordinary miracles at the hands of Paul. MYTHS AND TRUTHS
The following are myths about divorce, annulment, and remarriage in the Catholic Church. (Please note the word annulment is commonly used jargon, but the proper church term is declaration of nullity.)
MYTH #15 If you receive a declaration of nullity from the Church it means you never had a marriage.
TRUTH The Church still recognizes that a legal marriage took place. Annulments do not erase history nor do they try to. The process only looks at whether or not the mar-riage in question is a valid one according to the gospel and Church doctrine.
WATERLEAF “BABY BOTTLES
FOR LIFE”
SEPTEMBER 9TH AND 10TH In September St. Andrew the Apostle will be participating in a special fundraiser to promote and further a Culture of Life within our parish and local community. Waterleaf provides practical help; pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment as well as continuing education and support for women in our community who would otherwise be at risk for choosing abortion. Last year with the support of churches like St. Andrew the Apostle, Waterleaf served 789 clients, performed 521 pregnancy tests, 343 ultrasounds and rescued 60 babies. Baby bottles will be distributed to parishioners after the Masses on September 9th and September 10th to take home and fill with spare change, cash, a check or a prayer. Bottles can be returned the weekends of September 16th and 17th, 23rd and 24th, and 30th and October 1st. There will be a basket in the vestibule of Church where you can leave them. This fundraiser is a great way for each member of the family to help in building a Culture of Life. Thank you in advance for your response to the call of the Gospel to serve those in great need! May Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of His Mother, Mary, bless and protect you and your loved ones!

Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN
We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION
Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

MARRIAGE
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, Wednesday evening, 5:45-6:45pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain. I would like to have my house blessed.

The St. Andrew We Care Food Pantry is open every Wednesday from 10:00 am. until 12:30 p.m. for any eligible family in Romeoville in need of food assistance.
The requirements to receive food commodities from the Pantry is that a valid State of Illinois Driver's License or State of Illinois ID and a current utility bill with your Romeoville address must be presented at the time of sign-in. Due to the poor economy, loss of employment or housing, and if you are currently residing with a Romeoville family, you may bring your valid Illinois Driver’s License or State ID AND a current utility bill from the Romeoville residents you are living with. Some proof of residency must be established. This must be brought to the Pantry each time you come for food assistance.
