Dear Parents/Caregivers,
The photos on page 4 of this newsletter detail a very busy fortnight in
the life of our school. Let me tell you, this just scratches the surface.
Miss Stewart is on the first of many visits to her new school in Weipa.
Amanda and the new Principal, Rosie Harrison are interviewing for
administration staff this week. Amanda will be back with us on
Monday. CES have assured us of as little disruption as possible for
us, as arrangements are put into place to ensure this new school is
on track.
Next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Mrs Nichols and I will be in Brisbane. Earlier in the year,
we applied for funding under the Great Teachers, Great Results initiative and our application was
successful. To cut a long story short, Bernadette and I will be visiting a school in Brisbane to look at
how “Visible Learning,” has been incorporated in to the life of the school. This will be a focus for us
in 2016 and Bernadette will lead this process. Staff from St Thomas’s in Mareeba will join us.
Tomorrow, Heidi Vit, Pauline Lockyer and Justine McDonnell are attending a Professional
Development Day on Jolly Phonics. This is being held in Cairns. We will be adopting the Jolly
Phonics programme in our Early years classes in 2016. There will be an opportunity for you to learn
more about this as well as the new approach we are taking to the teaching of spelling.
Seven of our students are in Cairns today competing in the inter school chess competition. Thanks
to the parents who have provided the transport and to Deacon Peter de Haas and Mr Tyler for their
supervision and organization. Yesterday, we hosted a training session for the students competing
today. It was great to welcome students from the State School to St Teresa’s.
The Peninsula trials are being held on Sunday and Monday. Congratulations to all our students for
the wonderful effort and continued training. Mrs Smith and I are looking forward to attending the
carnival on Sunday.
Swimming notes have been sent home. Could you please ensure that the permission form and
payment are sent to the office as soon as possible.
On Tuesday, we were entertained by a brass quintet; part of Musica Viva. These gentlemen were
very engaging and the children really appreciated the wonderful music. It is particularly good for our
musicians to see where practice and commitment can lead. The concert was funded through our
RREAP allocation. Tomorrow, the Saint Augustine band is playing for us as part of their concert
tour. This commences at 11am and you are warmly invited to join us if you can.
Just to clarify what I said in the last newsletter about approaching students in the playground. This
applies to anytime you may have issues with students that should be dealt with in the school
context. I certainly did not mean that there was to be no communication with students and I am
really sorry if I sounded high handed.
On Monday, I attended the final day of the Small Schools Leadership programme in Townsville. As
I have mentioned before, there were principals from across many small schools in Queensland.
Collectively, they inquired about our community in the aftermath of the café explosion and assured
me of their continued prayerful support; a reminder of the larger Catholic context in which we live
and work.
Warm regards,
