DYNAMIC RESTRAINTS

Pipework systems which are subject to purely static loadingare generally supported on single acting vertical supportssuch as a hanger rod and pipe clamp or sliding base and, ifthe pipework is subject to change in temperature, some orall of these vertical supports may be spring supports, eithervariable or constant effort type. A supporting arrangementsuch as this is generally not suitable for pipework subjectto dynamic loading.

Dynamic loading may occur for a number of reasons.Unsteady flow, such as that caused by valve closure, produces dynamic forces and is referred to as waterhammer. In an earthquake, a piping system is alsosubject to dynamic forces.

Where the pipework system is subject to dynamic forces, vibration of the pipework will occur. This may beinjurious to the pipework and connected equipmentand plant. Pipework systems which are supported onsingle acting vertical restraints and springs with nolateral restraint will have low natural frequencies ofvibration and will experience large dynamic deflectionswhen subject to vibration; this will generally beunacceptable. Pipework stress analysis either byresponse spectrum or time history analysis can be usedto show the need for dynamic restraints.

In pipework systems which are subject to dynamic loading, it may be necessary to use rigid struts, whichact in both directions, rather than hanger rods, whichonly support downward acting loads. Rigid struts arealso used to provide lateral restraint where this isrequired. Snubbers are used where dynamic restraint isrequired, but the pipe has to be allowed to move thermally.

RIGID STRUT — FIG. 511

Pipe Supports Group manufacture a comprehensiverange of rigid struts covering loading up to more than90 tonnes with lengths up to 6 metres (12’8”). The strutsare designed for ease of use and to provide acost-effective dynamic restraint. Rigid struts use sphericalbearings to permit angulation and they provide lengthadjustment of +/- 100mm (4”) by means of right and lefthand threaded rod ends so that the adjustment can bemade without disconnection. Maximum loadings aretabulated in kilograms, Newtons and pounds andweights and axial stiffnesses are also given. Havingselected the size of strut that you need, the numberingsystem used makes the selection of the associatedwelding clevis and clamp a simple matter.

WELDING CLEVIS — FIG. 512

The welding clevis provides means of attachment of rigidstruts and snubbers to steelwork. The welding clevis isdesigned to provide +/- 5 degrees and +/- 90 degrees ofangulation as shown below.

SNUBBER — FIG. 516 AND FIG. 517

Pipe Supports Group’s range of hydraulic snubbers coverloadings up to more than 85 tonnes with cylinder strokeup to 20” (508mm). The snubbers are to a well provendesign; the numbering system and sizes of end fittingsare compatible with the other dynamic restraint components. The Fig. 517 Adjustable Strut Snubberincorporates a tubular extension with a length adjustment of +/- 50 mm. The Fig. 516 Short Snubber isfor use where available space is limited; there is noadjustment of length other than by moving the piston.

The hydraulic snubber is a standard 3000 psi hydrauliccylinder with a built-in fluid reservoir. The fluid is portedvia the end blocks to the external valve block. The valveblock contains two regulating valves with bleedgrooves. The connection of the manifold to the reservoirand the valve block to the manifold is by use of “O”ring seals.

In operation, normal thermal expansion of the pipeworkcauses the piston rod to extend or retract at a velocity lessthan the lock-up velocity. In this situation the snubber isinactive and the device has minimal effect on thebehaviour of the pipework. In a dynamic situation, shockor vibration forces which cause the rate of displacement ofthe piston to exceed the lock-up velocity will cause theregulating valves to close and the snubber limits the velocity. The resistive capacity of the unit transfers theforce to the structure and reduces the possibility of over-stressing the pipe or associated equipment connections.

The function of the bleed grooves is to control thevelocity after lock-up. For prolonged thrust, the bleedgrooves are eliminated and the unit becomes a rigidstrut during lock-up.

CLAMPS FOR RIGID STRUTSAND SNUBBERSFIG. 513, FIG. 514 AND FIG. 515

Pipe Supports Group offer a very comprehensive rangeof clamps for rigid struts and Snubbers. The Fig. 513clamp is a single plate stiff clamp incorporating asheathed U-bolt. The Fig. 514 clamp is a double platestiff clamp, again incorporating a single sheathed U-boltand having the axis of the connecting pin parallel to

the axis of the pipe. The Fig. 515 clamp is a conventional type pipe clamp. It should be notedthat when using type 515 clamps, because of thetolerance on pipe outside diameter, it may be necessary to use shim stock between the pipe andclamp to grip the pipe tightly and provide gooddynamic restraint.

All three types of clamps use close tolerance loadpins and are designed to operate within a 10degree cone of load application.

The clamps are designed in four temperature rangesto suit maximum design temperatures of 400 ºC(752 ºF), 490 ºC (914 ºF), 530 ºC (986 ºF), and 570 ºC(1058 ºF). Maximum loadings and pin sizes arecompatible with those for the struts and snubbers.

SELECTION — RIGID STRUTS

Rigid struts are selected on the basis of maximumapplied load and length between pin centres. Theloading shown at 1 metre (39.4”) pin centres is themaximum applicable for the size of strut inquestion. Loadings at longer lengths are also shownat 1 metre intervals. For intermediate lengths, maximum loadings can be derived by interpolation.Do not specify strut sizes where no loading is shownfor the required length. If a minimum stiffness ofrigid strut is required, make reference to thetabulation of stiffnesses. The lengths of rigid strutsshould be such that the maximum angulation is notexceeded, the attachment can be offset oninstallation if necessary to help achieve this.

SELECTION — SNUBBERS

Determine the minimum required stroke by takingthe anticipated design movement and adding anallowance for excess travel. This allowance shouldnormally be at least 20% of the anticipated designmovement. Then select a snubber where thecylinder stroke is greater than or equal to theminimum required stroke and the applied loadingsin tension and compression are less than theallowable maximum loadings in tension andcompression for the size and length of snubber asshown in the catalogue. For intermediate lengths, allowable compressive loadings may be determinedby interpolation. The length of the snubber must besuch that the maximum angulation is not exceeded. To calculate the required closed centres for thesnubber, use the following formulae:

Closed Centres = Installed Centres — X

where

X = (Stroke - Design Movement in Extension) / 2

or

X = (Stroke + Design Movement in Compression) / 2

This method will result in the spare travel beingdistributed evenly on either side of the designmovement.

SELECTION — WELDING CLEVIS

Welding clevises are selected to suit the size of strutor snubber: e.g. for rigid strut Fig. 511-4 or snubberFig. 517-4-10, use welding clevis Fig. 512-4.

SELECTION — PIPE CLAMP FORRIGID STRUT AND SNUBBER

1) Find the page relating to the appropriate pipesize.

2) Find the section relating to clamp maximumtemperature just greater than or equal to thepipework temperature.

3) Look at the clamp part numbers; the numberafter the pipe size is the clamp load designationwhich corresponds to the strut or snubber size;e.g. for 150 NB pipe at 500 ºC and using rigidstrut size 3, choice of clamps is:

Fig. 513-150-3-530

Fig. 514-150-3-530

Fig. 515-150-3-530

You may select any of the above 3 clamps.

In most circumstances, Fig. 515 clamps will be the leastexpensive and Fig. 514 clamps the most expensive.
