In my relatively short 24 years of life, I’ve seen

technology advance in ways I would have never

dreamed. This is especially true over the last 10 years

with the advancements in cell phones and the use of

the internet. Here, you will see my vision for the

landscape of communication technology 10 years from

now.

(Hopefully, I will remember this project then and compare my visions

to reality!)

In 2023:

As each communicational medium

is created, it is built around

specific specifications of the

consumer

Everything from cell phones, to

televisions, to radios, to internet

sites will be customized to frame

each individual’s interests/needs

at time of purchase

OLED screens

Camera equipped

› Built in webcams allowing viewers to connect/vote in “real time” to

reality shows such as American Idol, The Bachelor, and The Amazing

Race

Voice command

› Remote controls will become obsolete as changing the

channels, powering, etc. will be controlled by voice commands

Page 6: 2023: Landscape of Communication Technology - A.Walls

College classes are already offered online, but

in 10 years, all schooling will available via the

web

Page 7: 2023: Landscape of Communication Technology - A.Walls

Students will be able to finish their

education on their own time – the traditional

“12 years” will become obsolete

› Grade levels will be completed at the student’s

pace - whether faster or slower than current time

frames

Hard copy textbooks will no longer be

needed

Amped Security

› “Passcodes” will no

longer be sufficient in

securing our personal

data stored on our cell

phones. Security

measures will be amped

to retina screening and/or

finger print scans when

unlocking our cell phones

and tablets

Liquid batteries

OLED screens

› Contour into any

shape for privacy

and space efficiency

This theory “gives insight into what people do

with technology” (Grant)

› By determining the mainstream use of

communication technologies, we are able to

elaborate on the mediums we use most

Page 11: 2023: Landscape of Communication Technology - A.Walls

For example, the internet is a medium used

daily by millions. Its convenience, time

saving, and educational knowledge has

made it a necessity in society. By knowing

this, offering an education completely via

the web would be an extension of its uses

and gratifications.

Another example would be the evolution of

security in cell phones

› For instance, mobile phone security is one of the

top rated concerns buyers have when purchasing

a cell phone. By knowing this, companies can

incorporate the higher security measures

› Hence, going from “passcodes” to retina

scanning or finger printing

The how, why, and rate new

technology and ideas are spread

through different channels of culture (Wikipedia)

› Example: Liam (who already has a smart

phone) is debating on buying the newest

iPhone his buddy Jake has

Before jumping in and adopting the

innovation, Liam must decide if the newest

iPhone is worth the buy. He decides this

through the decision making process

“Do people just keep adding new entertainment

media, or do they adjust by dropping one form in

favor of the other?” (Grant)

› This question is the center of the principle of relative

constancy, making it the theory I can relate to most

Page 16: 2023: Landscape of Communication Technology - A.Walls

An example of this theory is text messaging versus calling.

It used to be that if I wanted to get in touch with someone

right away, I’d give them a call. Now, with text

messaging, I’m given an alternative to calling – I can send

them a text instead. This doesn’t mean I no longer make

phone calls, it simply means my time is now split between

texting and calling where as it was once used only for

calling. Many times, text messaging has proven to be a

relative advantage over placing a phone call.

project and compare my visions

to reality in 2023!
