Almighty God, on this night we celebrate the birth ofJesus, the Light of your presence in our world: Grantthat this candle, which we here consecrate to hisglory, may shine forth continually to dispel theshadows of darkness in our world. May Jesus Christ,the Light who knows no darkness, find his Lightburning in our hearts and lives, reflecting your glory.We ask this in the Name of the Holy One whose birthwe celebrate this night, our Lord and Savior JesusChrist. Amen.

The Christmas StoryBased upon the Christmas Gospel, Luke 21-20 andpresented by the Cathedral Children and Youth.Hymns are sung during the telling of the Christmasstory. The words are printed following the Gospel.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 21-20 (dramatized)In those days a decree went out from EmperorAugustus that all the world should be registered. Thiswas the first registration and was taken whileQuirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their owntowns to be registered. Joseph also went from thetown of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city ofDavid called Bethlehem, because he was descendedfrom the house and family of David. He went to beregistered with Mary, to whom he was engaged andwho was expecting a child. While they were there,the time came for her to deliver her child. And shegave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him inbands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, becausethere was no place for them in the inn. In that regionthere were shepherds living in the fields, keepingwatch over their flock by night. Then an angel of theLord stood before them, and the glory of the Lordshone around them, and they were terrified. But theangel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I ambringing you good news of great joy for all thepeople: to you is born this day in the city of David aSavior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be asign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands ofcloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there waswith the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highestheaven, and on earth peace among those whom hefavors!” When the angels had left them and gone intoheaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us gonow to Bethlehem and see this thing that has takenplace, which the Lord has made known to us.” So theywent with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and thechild lying in the manger. When they saw this, theymade known what had been told them about thischild; and all who heard it were amazed at what the

shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all thesewords and pondered them in her heart. Theshepherds returned, glorifying and praising God forall they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

HYMN #102 Once in royal David’s city (vs. 1-2)

Once in royal David’s citystood a lowly cattle shed,

where a mother laid her baby,in a manger for his bed:

Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven,who is God and Lord of all,

and his shelter was a stable,and his cradle was a stall;

with the poor, the scorned, the lowly,lived on earth our Savior holy.

HYMN #89 It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (vs. 1-2)

It came upon the midnight clear,that glorious song of old.

from angels bending near the earthto touch their harps of gold:

“Peace on the earth, good will to men,from heaven’s all gracious King.”The world in solemn stillness lay

to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they comewith peaceful wings unfurled,

and still their heavenly music floatso’er all the weary world;

above its sad and lowly plainsthey bend on hovering wing,

and ever o’er its Babel-soundsthe blessed angels sing.

HYMN #101 Away in a manger (vs. 1)

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.

The stars in the bright skylooked down where he lay

the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

HYMN #79 O little town of Bethlehem (vs. 3,5)

How silently, how silently,the wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human heartsthe blessings of his heaven.

No ear may hear his coming,5

Page 6: 2021.12.24 5:00pm Christmas Eve Family Pageant.Final1

but in this world of sin,where meek souls will receive him, still

the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin and enter in,be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angelsthe great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, abide with us,our Lord Emmanuel!

At the conclusion of the singing, all children areinvited to come forward to join the pageantparticipants.
