DENNIS SPARGER WAS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED ALREADY IN HIS SECOND SEASON AS “A CONDUCTOR

EQUIPPED WITH INSIGHT AS WELL AS CRAFTSMANSHIP.” IN THE PAST THREE AND A HALF DECADES HE HAS

RECEIVED EVEN MORE PRAISE FOR HIS PERFORMANCES WITH THE BACH SOCIETY CHORUS AND

ORCHESTRA, CONDUCTING THEM IN WELL OVER 175 PERFORMANCES OF MAJOR WORKS BY BACH AND

OTHER COMPOSERS.

UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP THE BACH SOCIETY WAS PRESENTED WITH THE EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS AWARD

BY THE ARTS & EDUCATION COUNCIL OF GREATER ST. LOUIS, THE FIRST CHORUS TO BE SO HONORED.

HIS LEADERSHIP WAS ALSO A DRIVING FORCE IN THE CHRISTMAS CANDLELIGHT CONCERTS BEING

SELECTED AS “ONE OF THE TOP 20 LIVE CHRISTMAS EVENTS IN NORTH AMERICA” BY BBC MUSIC

MAGAZINE.

HE INTRODUCED A YOUNG ARTISTS AWARD PROGRAM FOR SINGERS UNDER THE AGE OF THIRTY TWO,

ESTABLISHED A PROFESSIONAL CORE OF PAID PRINCIPAL SINGERS, AND DESIGNATED A POSITION FOR

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE TO PROMOTE THE CREATION OF NEW WORKS.

HE WAS AWARDED A DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS DEGREE IN CHORAL CONDUCTING BY THE UNIVERSITY OF

ILLINOIS, AND EARNED BACHELOR’S AND MASTER’S DEGREES FROM EASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY.

LENORA-MARYA ANOP IS PROFESSOR OF VIOLIN AND DIRECTOR OF STRINGS AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY EDWARDSVILLE (SIUE). A PASSIONATE, DEDICATED AND ACCOMPLISHED PEDAGOGUE, HER STUDENTS COMPETE REGIONALLY AND NATIONALLY, AND THEY HAVE WON ORCHESTRAL AND TEACHING POSITIONS IN THE UNITED STATES, ASIA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

DR. ANOP ALSO ENJOYS A BUSY PERFORMING CAREER AS A SOLOIST, CHAMBER MUSICIAN, AND CONCERTMASTER. SHE IS THE CONCERTMASTER OF THE BACH SOCIETY OF SAINT LOUIS ORCHESTRA, THE ORCHESTRA OF THE CATHEDRAL BASILICA OF SAINT LOUIS, THE SALEM CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, AND IS THE VIOLINIST OF TRIO MUSICI. BEGINNING HER VIOLIN STUDIES AT AGE 3 IN DENVER, COLORADO, SHE WAS ONE OF THE VERY FIRST SUZUKI STUDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES. A NATIVE OF ALBUQUERQUE, NM, KENNETH KULOSA MOVED TO ST. LOUIS IN 1997 AT THE INVITATION OF THE ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY. A GRADUATE OF THE NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, KENNETH STUDIED WITH LAURENCE LESSER AND HANS JORGEN JENSEN, LATER BECOMING MR. JENSEN’S ASSISTANT AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY. MR. KULOSA MAINTAINS A LARGE PRIVATE STUDIO OF TALENTED CELLISTS AND HAS PLACED STUDENTS IN VIRTUALLY EVERY MAJOR MUSIC SCHOOL AND CONSERVATORY IN THE UNITED STATES. CURRENTLY, HE SERVES AS ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF CELLO AT BOTH WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY AND WEBSTER UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS.

KENNETH IS A VERSATILE MUSICIAN, PERFORMING IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD AS A SOLOIST, ORCHESTRA MEMBER AND CHAMBER MUSICIAN. HE LIVES HIS PASSION FOR PERIOD PERFORMANCE AS A MEMBER OF BOTH THE KINGSBURY EARLY MUSIC ENSEMBLE AND BACH SOCIETY OF SAINT LOUIS. HE FREQUENTLY PERFORMS MUSIC

FROM THE BAROQUE AND CLASSICAL PERIOD ON BAROQUE CELLO, VIOLONCELLO PICCOLO, AND VIOLA DA GAMBA. HE HAS ALSO PERFORMED WITH EARLY MUSIC ST. LOUIS, BACH AT THE SEM, AND HAS SERVED ON THE FACULTY OF THE BAROQUE STRING ACADEMY OF THE COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL AT WEBSTER UNIVERSITY.

SINCE 2011, KULOSA HAS PERFORMED 10 COMPLETE CYCLES OF THE UNACCOMPANIED CELLO SUITES OF J.S. BACH ON BAROQUE CELLO, AND HIS PERFORMANCE OF THE C MAJOR SUITE CAN BE HEARD ON THE RECENTLY-RELEASED DOCUMENTARY, “FOURTY-SEVEN VIEWS OF LESLIE LASKEY.”

CHARLES METZ STUDIED PIANO AT PENN STATE UNIVERSITY, BEGINNING HIS HARPSICHORD STUDIES THROUGH PRIVATE LESSONS WITH THE LEGENDARY IGOR KIPNIS.   IN THE PROCESS OF EARNING A PH.D. IN HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE PRACTICE AT WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN SAINT LOUIS MISSOURI, HE STUDIED WITH TREVOR PINNOCK.   MORE RECENTLY, CHARLES HAS WORKED WITH WEBB WIGGINS AND LISA CRAWFORD AT THE OBERLIN CONSERVATORY.  CHARLES HAS PERFORMED ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH CONCERTS IN CHICAGO IL, SARATOGA NY, BENNINGTON VT, LOUISVILLE, KY AND LIBERTY MO IN THEIR BAROQUE MUSIC JEMS FEST.   HE HAS PERFORMED SOLO RECITALS AT THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION IN WASHINGTON D.C., OBERLIN CONSERVATORY AND APPEARED AS GUEST ARTIST IN KANSAS CITY WITH THE CHAMBER MUSIC ORGANIZATION, "SUMMERFEST". WITH THE CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF ST. LOUIS,  HE WAS THE

FEATURED KEYBOARD SOLOIST IN BACH’S FIFTH BRANDENBURG CONCERTO UNDER CONDUCTOR NICHOLAS MCGEGAN.   HE HAS APPEARED WITH THE ST. LOUIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, ARS ANTIGUA CHICAGO AND THE NEWBERRY CONSORT OF CHICAGO. 

RECENTLY HE HAS PLAYED WITH THE DESERT BAROQUE IN PALM DESERT CALIFORNIA AND DID PERFORMANCES INCLUDING MASTER CLASSES AT UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, ANN ARBOR AND PENN STATE UNIVERSITY IN STATE COLLEGE PA.  AS AN EARLY KEYBOARD SPECIALIST HE IS CURRENTLY PERFORMING ON HIS HISTORIC ITALIAN VIRGINAL, HARPSICHORDS AND FORTEPIANOS.  DR. METZ’S LIST OF PERFORMANCE CREDITS INCLUDES INTERNATIONAL APPEARANCES IN THE NETHERLANDS, GERMANY AND COSTA RICA.  DR. METZ ALSO OBTAINED A DOCTORATE IN OPTOMETRY AND WORKED FOR TWENTY YEARS IN HIS OWN PRIVATE PRACTICE AND CLARKSON EYECARE IN ST. LOUIS BEFORE RETIRING.  IN ADDITION TO HIS PERFORMING ACTIVITY, HE SERVES ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF ST. LOUIS AND THE NEWBERRY CONSORT.

CATHERINE EDWARDS RECEIVED HER BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN PIANO PERFORMANCE AND BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN FLUTE PERFORMANCE FROM AUBURN UNIVERSITY. NEXT SHE ATTENDED SIU-EDWARDSVILLE, STUDYING PIANO WITH RUTH SLENCZYNSKA AND CONTINUING FLUTE STUDIES WITH JAN SCOTT, FINALLY RECEIVING HER MASTER OF MUSIC DEGREE IN FLUTE PERFORMANCE. SHE THEN RECEIVED AN ARTIST DIPLOMA FROM THE SAINT LOUIS CONSERVATORY AND SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, WHERE SHE STUDIED WITH JACOB BERG. CATHERINE PERFORMS WITH THE BACH SOCIETY OF SAINT LOUIS ORCHESTRA AND VARIOUS FREE-LANCE ORCHESTRAS AND CHAMBER GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE SAINT LOUIS AREA.

NEZKA PFEIFER, MUSEUM CURATOR THE STEPHEN AND PETER SACHS MUSEUM AT THE MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN

NEZKA PFEIFER IS THE MUSEUM CURATOR OF THE STEPHEN AND PETER SACHS MUSEUM AT THE MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN, WHERE SHE DEVELOPS INTERDISCIPLINARY EXHIBITIONS ON BOTANICALLY-THEMED SUBJECTS. THESE EXHIBITIONS INCLUDE THE DIVERSE COLLECTIONS OF PLANT SPECIMENS, ARCHIVAL MATERIALS, FINE ART, AND BIOCULTURAL OBJECTS BELONGING TO THE GARDEN. RECENT EXHIBITIONS HAVE FOCUSED ON THE GARDEN’S WATER LILY COLLECTIONS, THE HISTORICAL IMPACT AND USE OF THE POTATO AS A GLOBAL FOOD CROP, AND THE DIVERSITY OF PLANTS USED TO MAKE PAPER AROUND THE WORLD.

THE MUSEUM AT THE MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN WAS FOUNDED BY HENRY SHAW TO GATHER BOTANICAL SPECIMENS, BOOKS, AND KNOWLEDGE FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SCIENCE AND RESEARCH OF BOTANISTS AT THE GARDEN. ORIGINALLY OPENED IN 1859, THE NEWLY RESTORED AND RENOVATED STEPHEN AND PETER SACHS MUSEUM RETURNS THE MUSEUM TO GARDEN OPERATIONS TO FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANT RESEARCH, COLLECTIONS, AND CONSERVATION THAT THE STAFF CONTINUE TODAY. CONSTRUCTED FROM PLANS BY GEORGE I. BARNETT, THE MUSEUM’S DESIGN WAS BASED ON MUSEUM NO. 2, THE ECONOMIC BOTANY MUSEUM AT THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS, KEW, LONDON. IT HOUSED THE BERHARDI HERBARIUM IN THE MUSEUM CABINETS, AND THE GARDEN LIBRARY WAS CONTAINED IN THE SOUTH GALLERY.

DURING THE MUSEUM’S MOST RECENT RESTORATION AND RENOVATION, THREE ADDITIONAL PORTRAITS WERE DISCOVERED AS CEILING MURALS IN THE SOUTH GALLERY. THESE PORTRAITS FEATURE THE LIKENESSES OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BOTANISTS TO HENRY SHAW: CARL LINNAEUS, SWEDISH BOTANIST AND FOUNDER OF MODERN TAXONOMY; ASA GRAY, THE MOST IMPORTANT AMERICAN BOTANIST OF THE 19TH CENTURY; AND GEORGE ENGELMANN, PHYSICIAN, BOTANIST, FRIEND TO GRAY, AND BOTANICAL ADVISOR TO SHAW, HELPING SHAW CREATE THE FOUNDATIONAL COLLECTIONS OF THE HERBARIUM AND LIBRARY FOR THE GARDEN.

THE BOTANICAL MURAL IN THE OPEN TWO-STORY GALLERY WAS PAINTED BY LEON POMAREDE, A FRENCH LANDSCAPE PAINTER WHO IMMIGRATED TO ST. LOUIS IN 1830. TODAY, POMAREDE’S MURAL HAS BEEN RECREATED TO INCLUDE THE ORIGINAL PLANTS, AS WELL AS OTHER SPECIES FOUND GROWING THROUGHOUT THE GARDEN. THE CENTRAL GALLERY IS PUNCTUATED BY THE NAMES OF SIX BOTANISTS ASSOCIATED WITH IMPORTANT 19TH-CENTURY EUROPEAN BOTANICAL INSTITUTIONS: STEPHAN ENDLICHER, JOHN LINDLEY, AUGUSTIN-PYRAMUS DE CANDOLLE, ANTOINE-LAURENT DE JUSSIEU, ROBERT BROWN, AND SIR WILLIAM HOOKER. DURING THE 1870S AND 1880S, SHAW COMMISSIONED PORTRAITS OF BOTANISTS WHOSE LIKENESSES WERE AVAILABLE IN BOOKS CONTAINED IN HIS PERSONAL LIBRARY. THESE PORTRAITS WERE THEN HUNG ALONG THE SECOND-STORY RAILING OF THE MUSEUM FOR DISPLAY. THOSE THAT ARE CURRENTLY DISPLAYED ARE REPRODUCTIONS OF THE ORIGINAL PAINTINGS IN THE GARDEN’S COLLECTION. THE BACH SOCIETY OF SAINT LOUIS WAS FOUNDED IN 1941 AND IS NOW IN ITS 80TH SEASON AS ST. LOUIS’ OLDEST CONTINUOUS CHORAL SOCIETY. BSSL IS DEDICATED TO PERFORMING CHORAL WORKS BY JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH AND OTHER CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF DR. A. DENNIS SPARGER, BSSL DELIVERS A VARIED AND EXCITING SEASON TO AN EVER MORE DIVERSE PUBLIC.

THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE STIMULATING AND ENRICHING MUSICAL AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES FOR AUDIENCES AND PERFORMERS IN THE TRADITION OF JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH.
