Cyclone.So now you’re a
Make the most of it.
Your orientation adventure begins! We are pleased to introduce you to Iowa State University’s orientation resources.
YOUR ORIENTATION INTRODUCTION Through required online orientation, you will learn about Iowa State’s campus, discover essential resources, meet virtually with an academic advisor, and register for your first semester of classes. We recommend completing online orientation as soon as possible after May 24 and no later than June 20. Check your email for instructions when online orientation opens on May 24.
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
1. Start by reviewing your orientation options. Decide if you’d like to visit campus for OnCyte Orientation in addition to completing the required online orientation this summer.
2. Take the ALEKS math placement assessment at least two weeks prior to your academic advising appointment.
3. Complete required online orientation and schedule your virtual academic advising appointment.
4. Attend your virtual academic advising appointment and register for your first-semester classes.
5. Experience OnCyte Orientation if you choose. Be sure to register if you plan on coming for OnCyte Orientation.
6. Sign up for Destination Iowa State, a student-only kickoff experience held the Thursday – Saturday before classes begin!
ONCYTE ORIENTATION
Orientation in person: As an added bonus, we invite you to attend an optional OnCyte Orientation. This one-day event held throughout the month of June is designed for Cyclones who would like to experience campus, prepare for their Iowa State adventure, and connect with other Cyclones in person. (Learn more on pg. 5.)
To maximize your experience, plan to complete the required online orientation and course registration before attending OnCyte Orientation. Register today to reserve your preferred date! These sessions are specific to your academic college, so if you change your major after you register, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss your options.
43
Throughout orientation you will meet Cyclones who will share their Iowa State story. What will your story be?
FAMILY ORIENTATION
Any member of your support network is invited to experience online family orientation – designed with them in mind. Follow the instructions sent in May to check it out.
SET UP YOUR NET-ID
You will use your Net-ID to access many University resources – from online orientation to your University email. If you haven’t already, register for your Net-ID before orientation at it.iastate.edu/resources/newstudent. For additional assistance or questions about this process, call the IT Solution Center at 515 294-4000 or email [email protected].
ALEKS: REQUIRED MATH PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT
All new students are required to complete the online ALEKS mathematics and statistics placement assessment through AccessPlus. ALEKS assesses your abilities and places you in the appropriate course. Visit math.iastate.edu/academics/undergraduate/aleks/placement.
You cannot be registered for a math or statistics course if you have not completed ALEKS. In addition to placement, ALEKS offers learning modules to help you brush up on math skills you may have forgotten.
Begin ALEKS early and invest at least two hours into the assessment. Plan to take ALEKS at least two weeks prior to online orientation, which allows you time to review your first attempt, work on the relevant learning modules, and retake the assessment if you are not satisfied with your results. The assessment may be completed up to five times. Your score will be recorded on AccessPlus at the bottom of your “current student info” tab. Final scores will be submitted to Iowa State three days prior to orientation.
For information on how to complete the assessment refer to math.iastate.edu/ academics/undergraduate/aleks.
(Technical note: If you are asked for a course code, simply click cancel. There is no code needed.)
Note: Students who have a documented disability should contact the Office of Student Accessibility Services at 515 294-5197 for testing accommodations.
ACCESSIBILITY
To ensure online orientation is a great experience for all Cyclones, online orientation is compatible with assistive technology and software programs. All videos contain closed captioning, which sometimes needs to be enabled on individual videos.
LEARNING COMMUNITIES
A learning community organizes students with similar academic or career interests into small groups so they can learn together, support each other, and develop new friendships. Ask your academic advisor about opportunities for you to join a learning community, or visit lc.iastate.edu.
Online orientation is your hub of information to succeed as a Cyclone. You’ll learn about the Cyclone essentials like paying for college, student resources, health and wellness, campus involvement, safety, living and dining on campus, diversity and inclusion, navigating campus, and academic resources.
Online Orientation.
COMPLETING ONLINE ORIENTATION
Watch your email on May 24 for your link to complete online orientation. We recommend completing online orientation as soon as possible and following the instructions to set up your academic advising appointment which will be held in June. Be sure to complete online orientation no later than June 20 to avoid any delays getting you registered for courses. Completing online orientation is required to register for classes.
LEARN ABOUT YOUR MAJOR AND COLLEGE
Online orientation will include great information about your major and academic college, as well as prepare you for your first semester of classes at Iowa State.
Orientation programming is specific to your major. It’s important to let us know if you would like to switch your major prior to orientation so we can provide you with the best possible orientation content. If you decide to change your major, please let us know at apps.admissions.iastate.edu/forms/change_application.php.
THE FINAL STEP
You’ll know you have completed online orientation when you pass the final quiz with a score of 70 percent or higher and earn your CYtificate of Completion.
VIRTUAL ACADEMIC ADVISING
Be sure to follow all instructions in the Academics and Course Registration module of online orientation. This section will guide you through scheduling your advising appointment and preparing for course registration.
