February 6, 2020 1 1 The Spirit The Spirit Last week I hoped to begin to move you to thinking about Lent. This week I am going to do it again. As you know, Shrove Tuesday is the 25th and there will be a pancake supper here hosted by the Catamaran Mariners from 5 to 7pm. It is always a lovely event, that my children especially enjoy. Perhaps it is the endless amount of syrup they seem to pour on those pancakes. Regardless, it is a great time and all the better when you are a part of it. The next day is Ash Wednesday. There will be times in the morning and the evening you can get ashes in the chapel. At 9am we will have our weekly contemplative prayer service (which is an incredible practice to adopt during Lent if you are looking for ways to connect with God), and when we are finished any who are present and want to receive ashes will. We will also have ashes available from 10 to 11am in the chapel. Finally we will have a small service of ashes in the chapel at 6pm. Both during the Sunday services on the 23rd and March 1st, you will be invited to sign up for a Lenten Small Group. Our goal is to have 150 people signed up for small groups by the week of March 1. Small groups will be meeting throughout Lent, with a focus on fellowship, the scripture from the Sunday before, and ministry to the community. I will be a part of a small group and hope that you do it, too. It is a great opportunity to grow closer to God and to help learn about people. Small groups will be meeting at different times and places throughout the week, so hopefully you can find one that meets your schedule. If you think your schedule is so crazy it would be nearly impossible to be a part of a small group, I invite you to consider being a leader of one. I am asking elders and deacons to lead these groups, but if you are feeling the call of God to lead one, please call me and let me know. Leaders are responsible for hosting the group and facilitating the discussion. Each week groups are provided handouts with discussion questions that will help groups learn about each other, discuss the passage, and discern where God may be calling them to serve others. These groups are not limited to members and friends of our church. If there is someone you want to invite to this experience, please do! On Sunday the 23rd we will be offering a daily Lenten devotional provided by the denomination to anyone who would like one (please, only one per household). Each devotional is a scripture, a short story about what a church is doing to serve the needy, and a prayer. This is also a great Lenten practice. The sermon series for Lent is titled, “Called to Die….” It is a double entendre of sorts. It speaks both of Jesus’s call to die on the cross which is the end of the Lenten journey, and it speaks of the ways we need to die to ourselves so that we can be what God wants us to be. I am endlessly called to die to my ego, to my pride, to my sense of security and comfort, to my sin, to evil, and much more that I may be the one God knows I can be. Lent is a precious journey for me. This year I am more excited about the journey of Lent than ever before, because my willingness to die to myself is greater than ever before. If you are anything like me you can think of a litany of mistakes and regrets. Perhaps you have less of a litany, but still know that there is some peace that is missing in life. If you feel that God has more in store for you, commit yourself to Lent this year. I promise your life will never be the same. Riding the wave of the Holy Spirit, Garrett

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS (QCDs) FROM IRAS.

Are you, or a friend or family member, 70 1/2 or older and subject to required minimum distributions from your IRA? If so, you can make your charitable donation to St. Andrew (or other charities ) directly from your IRA and there can be benefits from doing so.

What is the benefit? Normally, when you take money out of your IRA, it is a taxable event. The withdrawal adds to your taxable income and inflates your adjusted gross income (AGI). Then, if you itemize and give the same amount to charity, the charitable gift reduces your taxable income by the amount of the gift, but it does not reduce your AGI.

This can be of significance to some people because there can be negative consequencesto a higher AGI. Just some examples: the net investment income Medicare surtax, Medicare premium costs, the taxability of Social Security income, some credit phase-outs all factor off your AGI.

Another benefit is that those who donate by way of a QCD don't have to itemize at tax time to still get a tax break on their giving. While a QCD is not a complicated process, it must be done correctly to keep the IRS happy. Your broker or your investment company can assist you with the correct procedure. St. Andrew already has a few members who have donated this way and so the office is familiar with this option. You can find more details about QCDs on the internet just by typing in Qualified Charitable Distributions.

In short, a QCD isn't about giving more money to charity to get a better tax deduction. It is about the possibility of paying less tax when giving the same amount to charity. If you knowother people who might be interested in this option, please share this with them.

SUNDAY SERVICE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES – TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT

We have just completed a successful Capital Campaign designed to give staff and volunteers the capacity to enhance and improve worship services at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. In addition to improving parking lots to make access to our church easier, a major portion of the campaign focused on audio-visual improvements to the Sanctuary and adjoining rooms.

We also plan to broadcast Sunday services to the community, members not able to attend a service and others seeking God’s word. It is within our grasp to grow our church with God’s help and your commitment to sharing the work. We are all asked to be disciples of Christ, and we can do so by joining together to share our knowledge and time.

We are inviting interested members of our church to join together and form a Sunday Service Technology Committee to plan, train, coordinate weekly volunteers, and otherwise assist in improving and enhancing the operation of our new technology acquisitions. Running the equipment on a weekly basis and moving forward to broadcasting Sunday services are challenges that are more than one or two people can do alone.

If you are interested in helping with technology as it applies to audio, visual, broadcast, or a combination of these, please contact Susie Cauchi, Church Administrator, 530.673.7353, or [email protected] . Your contributions as a member of this new committee could be an investment in the health of our church as we impact the lives of church members and the surrounding community. We thank you for your continued support in making our upgraded audio-visual dream a reality as well as your patience while we strive to provide optimal audio-visual services for St. Andrew.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER, 2/25/2020, 5:00-7:00 PMShrove Tuesday is February 25, the day before Ash Wednesday--first day of Lent.  Catamaran Mariners is again planning a Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday) Pancake Supper to serve our church family and give back to God in preparation for Lent.

We have deferred maintenance problems in our beautiful church home, so we are dedicating the proceeds of the Pancake Supper to maintenance needs identified by our property team.  The heating and air conditioning unit in the church office needs to be replaced.  The office crew is currently using space heaters which are inefficient and consume much more electricity than necessary.

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is lots of fun and our opportunity drawing is always a highlight.  Please mark your calendars now for Tues. February 25, 5:00-7:00 pm, and join us in the Ministry Center for pancakes, ham, fruit, and coffee.  The strawberry and whipped cream pancake toppings are a big hit with the younger family members!  Free will offering for dinner; drawing at 6:30 pm.

I had the pleasure of catching up with Brandy Harmon, one of St. Andrew’s three “adopted families" from the Paradise Camp Fire in November, 2018. Brandy, a young mom of sweet little Paisley, was displaced from the fire. I met Brandy while I was volunteering at East Ave. Church in Chico, assisting in the clothing closet that had been established to help evacuees at the church. Brandy had come in for donated items for Paisley and herself - diapers, wipes, toothbrushes, toiletries, stroller, car seat and clothes. She was living with her elderly grandmother, who raised her, and they lost everything in the fire. Brandy was a caregiver in an assisted living facility in Chico and was at work when the fire broke out. Luckily, Brandy’s uncle managed to evacuate her grandmother just in time. Brandy was able to move in with her fiancé’s parents, but her grandmother had no temporary home in the area, so Brandy’s uncle immediately moved her up to Oregon to live with other family there. This broke Brandy’s heart, to have her grandmother (essentially, her “mother”) move so far away, and so quickly. When we met, she shared with me how much she was going to miss her grandmother, and I felt called to see to it that she somehow could reunite with her. When Brenda Wong, Director of Mother Hubbard’s Food Closet, shared with me that St. Andrew was considering adopting two families to help, I asked if we could add a third. Brandy’s daughter, Paisley, was 10 months old at the time, and also had nothing left. Brenda and Priscilla Kerr met with Brandy last year, and I’ve visited her several times to deliver gifts collected from our congregation here at St. Andrew.

Last night, I met with Brandy at Applebee’s in Chico for an update and to deliver more donated gift cards and a check. I also got to catch up with her future Mother-in-Law, who is just the sweetest lady and who has been praying for us all over here. We had such a lovely time visiting with each other. Since we last met up, Paisley had surgery on her heart to repair a hole (a defect she was born with), and she has since turned two. She is talking, singing and dancing nonstop and was so adorable at our dinner table. Brandy’s fiancé is now working for KHSL-TV in Chico doing technical programming, and Brandy now has a beautiful engagement ring on her finger. She recently left her job to find a healthier place to work as a caregiver. She has had a few interviews and absolutely LOVES working with our elderly population. It seems to be a perfect fit for her. To date, because of your kind and GENEROUS contributions as well as those from others in our community and across the nation, Brandy has received a little over $4,200 in gift cards and checks.

Brandy wishes to sincerely thank our St. Andrew family for the assistance and wanted to let you all know that she recently returned from a quick trip to Oregon to FINALLY visit her grandmother, who is doing exceptionally well. She plans now to visit her again soon, since our continued contributions will now allow for that. I would also like to personally thank you all for continuing to keep our three families in your hearts. The fire is gone, and a community is slowly rebuilding, but our families are still in need. You all have such amazing giving spirit and kind souls. Thank you thank you thank you!

St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Mission Team supports the ministry of

Hands of Hope Our Mission:

To work to enhance the quality of life in the Yuba-Sutter area by: ❖ Providing core support services to the homeless. ❖ Reintegrating the homeless within our community. ❖ Engaging the community to respond to the challenge of homelessness.

Fai h Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and

give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Just look at all the amazing things our Hands of Hope Service Center

provides for the homeless: •Showers and Laundry •Emergency clothes only (children&adults) •Partner Agencies services on site: Job Readiness, Resume' Building, Anger Management, Benefits enrollment (medical & Social Security), Ready to Rent, Group Sessions by Behavioral Health, Counselling Therapy, Adventist Street Nurses. •Use of our address for secure mail receipt •Snacks •Van transport to & from Better Way Shelter •Referrals to other agencies for assistance

The impact of homelessness on

families with children and single adults is devastating. We have seen an increase in seniors in our centers as well. We have had great support from our community and

truly appreciate it.

The homeless are vulnerable; most experience extreme poverty and residential

instability and a multitude of other challenges. Dealing with surviving every

day on the street does not allow for them to focus on any real future. By working

together and offering the expanded services we now have a chance to give them hope in

their situations. BUT we can only do it with your assistance.

Did you know St. Andrew has an Amazing Prayer Chain?

The Deacons at St. Andrew facilitate a Prayer Chain where concerns, of all sorts, for our church family and friends are contemplated and prayed upon by a group of caring St. Andrew family members. With approval of those for whom you’d like prayers, please feel invited to send your concerns or requests to Carl Hultquist at [email protected] or Susan Hamilton at 530/742-7548. Additionally, if you would like to join the St. Andrew Prayer Chain, offering prayers for specific people in need - depending on your communication preference, please provide your email to Carl Hultquist or your phone number to Susan Hamilton at the email address or phone number above. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20
