WELCOME TO ECU -

It was a big step to choose to come all the way to Perth to study, but I have not looked back.Studying at ECU has rewired my outlook on possibilities in life – both professional and personal. I love how ECU units are hands-on, giving valuable real-life skills. That, combined with ECU’s modern campus, teaching quality and staff support, have made my studies at ECU both smooth and enjoyable. Perth is an amazing place to live in and if you ask me, the coastline of Western Australia is the most spectacular in the world! I highly recommend combining your studies at ECU with travels in this amazing region.

YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR LIFESTYLEPerth is renowned for its year-round outdoor lifestyle. Consistently ranked as one of the most liveable cities in the world, it boasts a Mediterranean climate and some of the most iconic beaches in Australia. A city of two million people, Perth offers big city attractions combined with small town friendliness.

Perth is one of the world’s healthiest and sunniest cities!1

Perth enjoys the most days of sunshine of all of Australia’s major cities! The mild climate, endless blue skies, fresh air and brilliant white beaches are hard to beat! Even in winter, Perth enjoys plenty of warm sunshine.

Living in Perth

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

PERTH

Perth is the best value captial city in Australia2

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Worldwide Cost of Living Survey in 2017, Perth is the least expensive capital city in Australia.

The survey, which included 133 cities worldwide, measured the costs of over 400 items, including accommodation, food, transport and entertainment.

Free bus network Perth’s CAT (Central Area Transit) bus network in the Perth city centre, Fremantle and around ECU’s main campus in Joondalup is fast, convenient and free. International students receive 40%-45% discount on all other local transport in Perth.

Student jobs Earn pocket money and gain work experience whilst in Perth! International students on a Student Visa are allowed to work part-time, up to 40 hours per fortnight. The minimum wage is currently AUD $18.93 per hour, and most international students work in hospitality, retail and administration roles in Perth.

PERTH & WESTERN AUSTRALIA Top 10 Experiences

City beaches Perth boasts some of Australia’s trademark beaches within a short distance from the city centre. Picture-perfect Cottesloe Beach, for example, is just 15 minutes’ train ride away. Perth is the only major Australian city with sunsets over the ocean!

Rottnest Island Perth’s favourite playground and weekend getaway, also known as Rotto, is only 1.5 hours from Elizabeth Quay or just 30 minutes from Fremantle by ferry. The best way to see the island is by hiring a bike. Explore some of the 63 pristine beaches – and don’t forget a selfie with Rotto’s most famous resident: the quokka.

Margaret RiverAustralia’s premium wine region is also home to some of the most spectacular white-sand beaches in the world. Only three hours south of Perth, Margaret River makes an ideal weekend trip destination. For that Instagram-perfect sunset photo, head to Sugarloaf Rock.

4

Kings Park One of the largest inner-city parks in the world, Kings Park is an urban oasis overlooking the Perth city skyline. This is one the best picnic spots in town!

Ningaloo Reef White-sand beaches, aquarium-like waters and an impressive array of marine life makes the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Marine Park a trip to remember. Ningaloo is great anytime of the year – many head there between March and August for the whale shark season.

Outdoor cinemasPerth’s balmy summer evenings are ideal for an evening at the outdoor cinema. There are several open air options, including one on ECU’s Joondalup Campus!

The Pinnacles A moon-like desert three hours north of Perth, the Pinnacles are truly otherworldly. The stunning limestone formations are best viewed and captured at sunset. Make sure to visit nearby Cervantes to try their famous seafood.

Fremantle Historic Fremantle is a lively port city only half an hour from Perth. Famous for its unique architecture, markets and mouth-watering gelato, Fremantle makes a great short trip any time of the day!

Fringe World Festival Fringe is the annual highlight of Perth’s summer events calendar. This six-week long festival sets Perth on fire every January and February, with parks and squares turning into entertainment zones filled with comedy, cabaret, circuses and much more.

Cycling in Perth Perth has arguably some of the best cycling tracks in the world, with routes along the river, beaches and parks. One of our favourites is the loop from Elizabeth Quay to East Perth and South Perth foreshore.

10

ECU has HUNDREDS of units (Aussie lingo for “subjects”) to choose from as part of your Study Abroad program. Unsure where to start? We have you covered.

Choosing Your Units

Study Abroad Application Checklist

STEP 1Choose your unitsECU has hundreds to choose from. To make your choice easier you have some options. Check out our suggestions in this brochure for some exciting unit offerings; head to our online Handbook to search by keyword; speak to an ECU representative agent in your country; or contact the ECU International Office. ecu.edu.au/handbook

STEP 4Submit your application Make sure you have added the units you plan to study because ECU will assess you for any pre-requisites during your application. This will save you significant time later on, so please include your unit selection.

STEP 2Chat to your home universityIf you are seeking credit towards your degree back home, chat with your university about the ECU units you plan to nominate. They can tell you if they will give you credit. If you are not currently studying, no worries! You are still eligible to apply for Study Abroad.

STEP 5Accept your offer You can do this via the Virtual Information Pack (VIP). Please review your offer letter for your tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). You will need to pay your fees and OSHC before we can issue your Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) ecu.edu.au/new-students/virtual-information-pack

STEP 3Start your application online There are two course codes to choose from: X01 Study Abroad Programme (Undergraduate) and X02 Study Abroad Programme (Postgraduate). Simply select the program that applies to the level you wish to study. ecu.edu.au/future-students/applying

STEP 6Enrol in your units It is best to do this before you reach Australia, as classes fill fast! You can enrol via VIP. The units you have nominated to this point have been approved, so if you make any changes, please note that you may need to be assessed if the new unit has a pre-requisite.

The undergraduate units in the following pages, unless otherwise stated, are 15 credit points, and the vast majority of them don’t have prerequisites. We have also listed a small selection of Postgraduate units, which are 20 credit points unless otherwise stated.

If you are wondering whether ECU offers other units, the answer is yes. We have hundreds to choose from. You can search online via the ECU Handbook. Just note, the price may vary for some other units, so check in with us or visit the Fees Calculator https://apps.ecu.edu.au/fees-calculator/

We recommend that you grab a highlighter, then select the units that match your interest. Just keep in mind units are subject to availability. For example, you may be eligible for a unit when you apply, but classes do fill up! So as soon as you get your offer, please accept and enrol.

If you have questions about Study Abroad, including unit selection and the application, feel free to contact the International Office for support: [email protected]

ECU VILLAGEThe ECU Village, our on-campus accommodation, is convenient, comfortable, and great value. With students from all around the world, it is a vibrant living environment in the heart of ECU. Staying in The Village will give you access to regular events, 24/7 security and a range of facilities such as a swimming pool, theatre room, recreation areas, study room and laundry.

ECU Village - Joondalup Campus ECU Village - South West Campus

OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION If you’re looking for independent accommodation, there are plenty of options. We recommend to carefully plan where to live as transport links are important. Perth currently has lower rental prices than other major Australian cities. realestate.com.au/rent/ is a popular source for viewing rental options.

HOMESTAY For a truly local experience, living with an Australian family is a good option. Visit homestaynetwork.org/edith-cowan-university for more information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q–What do you mean by “unit”?

A–A unit just refers to the different subjects you enrol in as part of your Study Abroad course. So you would enrol in 3-4 units per semester at ECU.

Q–Why do I have to choose my units when I apply?

A–We assess you for units at the same time we assess you for course entry. This saves a lot of time later. How? Well, some units will have what we call prerequisites, which are really just entry rules. By assessing you against these rules early, you can have a smooth Acceptance and Enrolment process once you get an offer.

Q–There are so many units. How do I know which ones will suit me?

A–You have lots of options: you can look at the unit outlines on the ECU handbook, chat to one of our education agents, or shoot us an email [email protected] Better still, head to page 12-16 of this brochure and see if anything matches your current interest or study direction.

Q–How many credit points should I enrol in?

A–The minimum enrolment is 45 credit points, but 60 credit points is popular too. Just keep in mind that 45-60 is a full-time study load. Anything higher could be difficult to manage.

Q–What are the Study Abroad fees like?

A–In 2020, 45 credit points is AUD $5,025 and 60 credit points is AUD $6,700. These fees apply to most of our units, but not all of them. ECU or your agent can let you know more. You can also head to our Fees Calculator to review prices https://apps.ecu.edu.au/fees-calculator/

Q–What are the Academic and English entry requirements for Study Abroad?

A–You will need to meet standard ECU entry requirements for an undergraduate (UG) or postgraduate (PG) ECU course. For example, we accept a number of English exams that meet entry, but you will need to meet the minimum score we’ve set for UG or PG. Head to https://www.ecu.edu.au/future-students/course-entry/study-abroad for more information. Remember that you can apply to be assessed in full, so if you’re unsure, submit today.

Q–Can ECU help me apply for a Student Visa?
