Prospectus January – June

The front cover artwork was created by Lacie War
“Healing the Dog that has been kicked when down”
Mental health, suicide, addiction and domestic violence can co-occur causing complex trauma. A
social worker compared the limbic system to a lizard, the frontal cortex to a monkey and the one
that communicates between them the dog brain. This work is part of a tryptic and forms part of a
wider collection of pieces addressing the issues listed above. The brain is the bodies computer and
when one part of it doesn’t function properly both mental health and the body can be impacted in
different ways.
But there is always hope. Even though it’s raining drowning out the dog trying to communicate with
the monkey and the craters and bubbles under the surface are trapping the lizard, the dog still can
move forward, and healing can occur.
R U OK isn’t just a day, it is a trait that people like me need for more than just one day. Break the
stigma of mental health. Stand proud. A diagnosis is not what defines a person.

Art as therapy? Find out how art, and in the process of using art materials, people can gain control and confidence. For some the art becomes more about relaxation or a social link, for others they find an inner passion and go on to pursue goals as emerging artists. Overall, it’s the process and the actual art that provide a voice and allow expression and some find this therapeutic. So, art can be therapy.

Developing a recovery plan is an essential thing to do for anyone with a mental health challenge. A recovery plan is about capturing in words the simple & practical things that contribute to living a healthy, balanced, and meaningful life. It makes clear all of the things that need to happen on a daily basis to stay well. It helps us to recognise our triggers and warning signs; and to develop tools that actually work when dealing with challenges. It is also a plan of what needs to happen building up to a crisis and post crisis. This session will explore the elements that make a useful recovery plan and will provide a springboard for you to begin your own recovery plan.

Volunteers are invited to be involved in many areas within the service primarily the Acute Inpatient Units, the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Units, and the Community Care Units. Volunteers visit usually once or twice a week for a few hours, helping around the facilities, offering support and companionship to consumers of the service.
To become a volunteer, you need to contact the above number or email for an application. Once we receive your application, we then contact you to organise an interview. If you are successful you are then placed on a list for the next Volunteer orientation day. Once this is completed you can start. The Cadence Research Team is looking for better treatments for people with psychosis. We want sustained recovery for everyone who experiences serious mental illness, with no harmful side effects.
We are looking for volunteers to determine if receiving metformin medication on initiation of clozapine treatment assists with minimising weight gain in people who experience schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
Metformin is commonly used in the management of diabetes and has been shown to assist with mild weight loss in people without diabetes. The trial is a randomised placebo-controlled trial. The term randomised indicates that you will be selected into either the metformin or placebo group completely by chance. A placebo is a medication with no active ingredients. It looks like the real thing but is not. This clinical trial will randomise participants in a 1:1 design, which means there is an equal chance of being in either the metformin or the placebo group.
Study details:
• 24-week double blind clinical trial
• Clinically Validated measures and Physical health measures and assessment of adverse drug reactions weekly for the first 4 weeks, then monthly for duration of trial
• Mandatory blood collection x3 (baseline, week 12 and 24)
• All assessments completed by the Cadence Team, no on-going burden to clinicians
• Adjunct treatment; no restrictions / impact on current treatment regime
• Metformin / Placebo trial medication provided at no cost
• Reimbursement; $140 in Coles / Myer gift-cards ($20 at weeks 0,4,8,12,16,20 & 24)

Quotes from attendees:
“I’m just that grateful that you have taken the time to have a group like this,
because I’ve been to so many different groups and I didn’t think that I would
stop smoking and here I am sitting here telling you, that I’ve been 80 days
without a cigarette at all, it can be done”
“The benefit I get out of the group is inspiration and encouragement. It’s
refreshing and I always come away feeling inspired and with new ideas.
A feeling of belonging, building my self-esteem, helps me stay steady on my
recovery journey, not so many hills.
Reduces my isolation, taking time out for me, inspiring art exhibitions and
when doing my art my brain is at peace”
“I come to Soccer every Thursday, and I enjoy it and it’s the best time I’ve ever
had.”
“I’m a full-time carer for my father I really like coming down here and playing
with the boys from Queensland Health. I feel that this is a really good outlet, a
little bit of respite to kick the ball around helps get a bit of the endorphins up,
the happy chemicals and keeps us going. Thanks.”
