Welcome to the summer options for the BCS Co-curricular programme. At BCS we are fortunate to boast an extensive range of clubs and activities. All of these are a major part of school life, and we are committed to providing an outstanding all-round education that goes beyond the classroom to help broaden horizons for everyone. I hope your son or daughter will take advantage of the broad range of Co-curricular options available to them.
What is Co-curricular?The ethos of Co-curricular is embedded into BCS and works to support the whole school directive of the 4Cs (Curiosity, Commitment, Creativity and Community). Its aim is to provide opportunities for pupils and students to access activities, programmes and learning experiences that complement their learning in school. There are a variety of activities for both girls and boys to take advantage of.
Co-curricular at BCS encompasses musical and sporting events, celebration of the arts, academics, orchestral evenings, house events, careers talks, scholar twilight seminars and much more. These opportunities allow pupils to gain something which enhances their educational experience and equally is something that we the staff and pupils are proud of.
When will it happen? The Co-curricular programme runs before school, at lunch and after formal lessons between 3.45pm and 4.45pm. In addition there are a number of evening and weekend opportunities.
Each year group will be offered a different timetable of activities each term which pupils sign up to. These will be a mix of academic extensions, leadership and cultural opportunities. Pupils will also be able to use some of this time for prep. We encourage pupils to lead in the activities being offered during the Co-curricular time through the pupil voice.

YHOUSE SYSTEMVOLUNTEERING
HOUSE SYSTEMBeing a member of a House is about being a part of a team. Every member is significant,
as each individual brings unique skills, knowledge and experiences. It’s an important part
of life at BCS as our students and staff enjoy working together to achieve high standards in
everything we do.
We have four Houses at BCS; Brownsea, Purbeck, Solent and Studland. The overall aim
of the House System is to create a strong cohesive environment between all year groups,
providing them with the opportunity to further develop skills and experiences in order to
become confident and well-rounded individuals.
The House System is centred around the school’s ‘4Cs’ - Curiosity, Creativity, Commitment
and Community and aims to incorporate these into every day school life. The House System
helps to build confidence through collaboration; highlights the importance of persevering
through a task; encourages taking risks as a group to achieve a common goal and learning
to be enquiring and creative in a safe atmosphere. The House System achieves this by
providing House members with enjoyable and competitive House events; thereby allowing
students to succeed both in and outside of the classroom. House events/activities are
organised and supported by a variety of departments in the school and can be anything
from a quiz to ‘The BCS Bake Off’. Other House events include the House talent show; art,
photography and various sporting and academic competitions throughout the school year.
Students, who participate in these House events are awarded House points and every pupil
will be an active member of at least one of the events/activities during each school year.
House points can be awarded to a student who makes progress, shows improvement, takes
a leadership role and participates in various school and House activities. Every event earns
House points which are collected over the year and updated on the House notice board.
Every half term the highest House point achievers of each year group are acknowledged
and rewarded in assembly. At the end of the year the House with the most points wins the
House Trophy.
Each House has two House Captains selected from our outstanding Sixth Form. These
young adults act as excellent role models and aspirational figures to pupils in the younger
years and liaise with pupils and staff in order to assist in the organisation and everyday
running of the House System.

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION The EPQ is a nationally recognised qualification that is equivalent to half a full A level. Many universities allow some credit for the EPQ, usually in the form of a slightly reduced offer. For example a standard offer of AAA may be reduced to AAB for a student presenting an application with a good EPQ grade. Please note that there is no guarantee that a university will make this reduction, although all universities recognise that a student who presents with an EPQ qualification offers something more than a student who applies with the usual three A2 grades.
At BCS Y12 students who opt to take the EPQ qualification will initially take a 1 term training course delivered weekly through the co-curricular programme. This course equips students with the skills needed in order to complete the EPQ course. These skills include:• ChoosingasuitableEPQtitle• Researchskills• Projectmanagementskills• Evaluationskills• Academicwriting• Reflectionskills• Criticalthinking• Plagiarism• Howtoproduceaprojectdiary• Presentationskills
The EPQ is first and foremost designed to develop a student’s ability for independent study which explains why universities place such a high value on it. Students in Y12 who take the 1 term course are not required to continue to complete the EPQ qualification although it is hoped that many will. Following the one term course students should then aim to complete their project by the end of the autumn term in Y13. There will be support from sixth form tutors as well as the EPQ coordinator, who will deliver the initial one term training course. It is important to understand that the majority of the work carried out in the autumn term will be independent and not super-vised i.e there will be no EPQ lessons in the Y13 timetable.
Two weekly co-curricular sessions will be offered during the summer term of Y12, with attendance at ONE session only being required. The maximum number at each session should be 15, with each session being identical to the other weekly session.
