Late night trains and buses calling all stations and stops to Edinburgh will be running – please consult ScotRail and East Lothian Buses timetables for full details.

FESTIVAL BOX OFFICE

Our front cover was designed by Emily Cowie, P7 at Gullane Primary School.

Page 3: 2019 PROGRAMME - Fringe by the Sea · Georgina Brown, Holger Mohaupt, Jayne Stokes, Karen Gabbitas, Julia Zeller Jacques, Rachel Marshall, Rosie Savin. THE STUDIO AT THE COACHOUSE

A muckle big hello and welcome to another fabulous incarnation of Fringe By The Sea! With last year’s bold approach to programming receiving such lovely feedback, we have been working hard to emulate its success and we hope you’ll agree that we have another awesome line-up heading to this delightful little corner of East Lothian.

Music is once again a strong and varied highlight. With US R&B legend Alexander O’Neal, Scotland’s own super-songstress Eddie Reader, electronic music pioneers Groove Armada and the indie-rock giants Idlewild among those taking to the Simpson & Marwick Spiegeltent, you get our drift… And that’s before we even start thinking about gigs in the North Berwick Fry and elsewhere!

As well as keeping the recently extended 10-day format, we’re packing lots more family, literature, comedy, film, community and environmental events into the programme – more than 160 in total.

We’ve been busy beavering in the community to develop deeper local partnerships with the North Berwick Community Area Partnership, North Berwick Youth Project, the Scottish Seabird Centre, North Berwick Library, North Berwick Movies, East Lothian Countryside Rangers, North Berwick in Bloom and North Berwick & District Probus, to name but a few. And from slightly further afield, Soundhouse and Speaker Buzz are bringing yet more quality performers to the festival.

We’d like to remind you that all this wouldn’t be possible without the support of the local community, passionate volunteers and generous sponsors. To all of them we say an enormous "Thank You", especially the North Berwick Trust.

We hope you have a wonderful time at the festival and please do recommend to friends and family near and far Scotland’s Freshest Festival. Enjoy!

Niall Middleton & Rory Steel Directors, Fringe By The Sea

OUR STORYFounded in 2008, Fringe by the Sea is operated and run by Fringe by the Sea Ltd, a not-for-profit organisation. It is only through the incredible support of numerous community volunteers and organisations as well as passionate sponsors that the festival is able to succeed. FOOD & DRINK

OUR ENVIRONMENT

Food & Drink at the Harbourside:

At the harbour, a delicious array of streetfood vendors will satisfy all tastes and appetites. We’ve selected local businesses delivering the best of East Lothian’s produce with the maximum of love. Think gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, hand cut fries, and homemade seasonal soups from Wild at Heart; Scotland's finest and tastiest fish and seafood with a modern twist from Hooked; healthy and delicious Indian-inspired hearty curries and light bites from Spice Pots; Big Blu’s wood fired perfect pizzas; Moules Frites from a horsebox; Alandas’ championship winning gelato ice cream and Hometown Coffee’s wonderful, speciality beans ground by attentive, passionate baristas.

We work hard to reduce waste and minimise the impact of the festival on our beautiful local environment. Please help us by doing your bit and disposing of waste thoughtfully and responsibly in the available recycling facilities and bins. We employ a team of litter pickers who help keep the venues and surrounding areas tidy. We encourage all our traders to reduce waste and packaging where possible. If you would like to bring your own reusable containers for food and drink to be served into, please feel free.

A Rewilding Journey with Peter Cairns of Scotland: The Big Picture

Despite Scotland’s international reputation for raw beauty and drama, a devastating story of ecological decline lies hidden in the landscape. Some of Scotland’s top photographers and filmmakers have spent three years capturing the beauty of the country’s landscape and its wild inhabitants. Peter Cairns, one of those photographers and Director of SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, explains the principles behind rewilding, why we need it and why we need it now against a stunning backdrop of photography and film. He will also pose an intriguing question: what should Scotland look like?

Blue Rose Code

A nomad both geographically and musically, Edinburgh-born Ross Wilson writes from the heart, eschewing any specific genre, and the twelve songs on new album "The Water Of Leith" addressing themes of love, loss, travel, home, accepting the past and embracing the future, are painted with colours of folk, jazz, soul and pop; an eclecticism that has become a hallmark of Blue Rose Code and has seen him compared to John Martyn, Van Morrison and Tom Waits. 'All I know is, this album makes my heart swell. Filled with emotion and yearning and exploration of Scotland inside and out, it’s a splendid edifice. Here’s to its architect!' – Ian Rankin

Mad March Hare Yoga Workshop & Long Table Brunch

Starting with a wonderfully nourishing, releasing and restoring Yin Yoga practice. Then on to Yang Flow, working through a dynamic and strengthening set of postures flowing from one Asana to the next. All resulting in a delicious release and ‘letting go’ of those tight held areas of tension we all carry and store.

Peter Irvine

There’s probably no-one who knows Scotland like Peter Irvine. Over the past 25 years his travel bible, Scotland The Best, has sold over 250,000 copies. The latest edition is the 13th for which he has travelled the length and breadth of this country; walking the walks, tasting the food and admiring the views, beaches and waterfalls. The result is a book that is consistently considered the true insider’s guide to Scotland and described by The Scotsman as 'the only guide worth a damn'.
