Weed and Algae problems in your lake or pond? We Can Help!

Quality products for the “do-it-yourselfer.” Since 1975 Aqua-Weed Control Inc. has been serving the aquatic plant control needs of lake and pond owners in Michigan, offering products and services to enhance our water resources. Aqua-Weed Control Inc. services hundreds of ponds and some of the largest lakes in Michigan. We find that many lake and pond owners want to take care of their aquatic weed problems themselves...they just need a little guidance from the professionals. This brochure was designed to help.

Taking care of your lake or pond has never been easier! Most of the products we sell are not available in your local hardware store or plant nursery. The products we offer are the same commercial grade lake and pond weed killing products we use every day in our service operation. We are one of the largest buyers of aquatic herbicides in Michigan, allowing us to offer lower pricing to you! To ensure we are providing you with the right product and in the right amount, simply follow the steps outlined within this brochure. The brochure makes your selection easier by listing which products work best with each specific algae or plant type. If you have an aquatic weed and/or algae problem in your lake or pond we can help.

4

Chara Algae An advanced form of algae, gray-green or yellow in appearance, is often mistaken for a vascular plant. The best way to identify Chara is by the musky odor and gritty, bristly feel due to calcium deposits on the surface.

Pithophora “Horsehair” A resistant form of algae that commonly grows along the bottom of ponds, in course clumps resembling pads of steel wool. This algae has a high level of reproducive cells and is difficult to control.

Starry Stonewort An invasive form of algae. It is submersed with long uneven branches that look angular at each joint. The branches feel smooth and look like green gelatin. May have one star-shaped, cream colored bulb at the base of each cluster of branches.

Similar in appearance to Chara.

Algae

5

Lyngbya Algae This is a type of blue-green algae made up of thousands of individual cells that usually lay on the bottom of the pond ranging from blueish-green, to black, to gray in color. This algae will form mucilage masses causing the algae to rise to the surface and also giving it high resistance to chemical control.

Filamentous Algae Often called “pond scum” or “slime” this algae forms greenish mats upon the water’s surface. The algae usually begins its growth along the edges or bottom of the pond and “mushrooms” to the surface buoyed by the oxygen it produces.

Planktonic “Pea Soup” Algae A microscopic form of algae, suspended in the upper few feet of water. This algae often reaches bloom proportions in warm waters. Their presence will cause water to appear pea soup green or brownish. Some forms of this algae can be toxic.

Bladderwort A free floating annual plant that lacks visible roots. Finely, divided leaves are scattered along the stem with numerous small bladder-like structures on the leaves. Flowers emerge above the surface and are yellowish with 3-lobes and a spur underneath. The underwater leaves bear small oval “bladders” that trap and digest small aquatic creatures.

Southern Naiad A plant with ribbon-like leaves, opposite or in whorls of three, mostly less than 1/2 inch long. Single seeds are found encased in the leaf sheath. Southern Naiad reproduces by seeds and fragmentation. Flowers are at the base of the leaves but so small that they can only be observed with magnification. Often confused with sago pondweed and widegeon grass.

Clasping-Leaf Pondweed Native to Michigan this plant features leaves that are wide and wavy with a broad base which appears to extend three-quarters of the way around the stem. The upper stem is commonly branched and leafy. Plants grow a calcium coating on the leaves throughout the summer months.

Curly-Leaf Pondweed Leaves often look “crinkled” and are thin and membranous with veins plainly visible. Small teeth visible along entire margin of leaf. Fruits borne in spike above the water surface.

**Invasive Species**

Water Buttercup This plant has a submersed stem that is erect in water. Tufts of thread-like leaves alternate along the stem. Conspicuous yellow or white flowers emerge from the water.

Eel Grass Appears in mid to late June, has roots buried in mud with tufts of ribbon-like, flaccid leaves. It has horizontal stem system connecting tufts of leaves. Flower visible later in summer supported by a coiled stalk.

Cattails A long and slender plant with grass like stalks up to 10 feet in height. Inhabits wet lowlands and water up to 4 feet deep. Cattails also provide good cover for wildlife.

Eurasian Watermilfoil This plant features leaves in whorls of 4 with 14 to 20 pairs of leaf divisions. Stalks of tiny, reddish flowers may extend above or on the water surface. Plants may reach lengths of 10 ft. or more. Plant stems and leaves may become calcified in hard water. Has been shown to hybridize with Northern Milfoil.

**Invasive Species**

Northern Watermilfoil Unlike Eurasian Watermilfoil, look for dark-green feathery leaves that are grouped in fours around a hollow stem. Leaves are made up of 5 to 10 pairs of leaflets. Leaves are rigid when removed from water and stems. Stems do not branch from the surface like Eurasian Watermilfoil.

Lily Pads A floating leaf plant with leaves that are oval to elliptical with smooth, un-lobed edges. The “stem” is attached to the middle of the leaf. Leaves may be 2 to 5 inches in length. A slimy, gelatinous coating covers the underside of the leaf and stem. A white or yellow flower is produced.

American Pondweed Usually found close to shore, features floating leaves that are oval with base tapered to distinct petiole. The submersed leaves are oval to lance-like, tapered to long petiole. Generally, plant has sparse leafing. Leaves alternately arranged on stem.

Sago Pondweed A perennial plant that has no floating leaves. The stems are thin, long and highly branching, tapering to a point. The leaves grow in thick layers and originate from a sheath. Sago pondweed is an excellent food for waterfowl.

Coontail A non-rooted submerged plant. Leaves are dark green in color and arranged in whorls on the stem. Spacing between leaf whorls is highly variable and have forking of the leaves.

Duckweed Small floating green leafs that are often mistaken for algae. Reproduction is by means of fragmentation. Duckweed tends to grow in quiet, undisturbed water. Often duckweed is found in ponds mixed with Watermeal.

Watermeal The smallest of flowering plants, granular in size, is usually abundant when present and displays no roots. Watermeal tends to grow in quiet, undisturbed water. Watermeal is an aggressive invader of ponds and is often mixed in with Duckweed.

Fanwort (Cabomba) A submerged weed except for a few small alternately arranged elongated floating leaves. The submerged leaves are opposite, attached by a single petiole, but above the petiole form a finely divided "fan-shaped" leaf.

**Invasive Species**

Elodea A submersed weed with broad oval leaves, usually three in number, arranged in whorls around the stem. Whorls are compact near the growth tip with spacing between the whorls gradually increasing further down the stem. Differs from Hydrilla with three leaves and smooth texture on leaf.

Hydrilla A submersed weed with stems that can grow up to 25 feet long. Leafs grow in whorls of four to eight around the stem. Leaves have visible teeth and small spines on the leaf vein. Hydrilla is not yet found in Michigan. If you suspect that Hydrilla is in your lake/pond please call us for a proper identification.

Calculating Water Body Size

Acre-foot = Acreage x Average Depth

Example: A 1 acre pond with an average depth of 3 feet = 3 acre feet.

An acre-foot of water is 325,851 gallons.

If your pond is circular shape:

If your pond is triangular shape:
