Half a century since its establishment by a small group of kiwis, CRV Ambreed is now part of the world’s third largest artifi cial breeding company, CRV Ltd.
CRV’s ambition is to occupy a leading role as a partner for farmers in breeding and genetics, and herd management through information products and services.
CRV stands for a healthy and effi cient herd that farmers love to milk. Healthy and effi cient cows are better cows. A problem-free, easy herd that is a pleasure to milk. An economically producing herd that produces plenty of milk, with ease, for many lactations.
CRV has created a Better Life index, Better Life Health and Better Life Effi ciencyTo simplify navigating the complex world of traits and breeding values in order to breed a healthy and effi cient cow, CRV created all-in-one trait indexes, Better Life Health and Better Life Effi ciency.
We’re committed to bringing the latest technology and herd improvements to kiwi farmers and continuing to be pioneers for the industry.
As we look to the future and the challenges facing farming, genetic solutions will become increasingly signifi cant for farmers.
We will deliver on our promise of ‘Better Cows | Better Life’.
Here’s to the next 50 years!

Results taken from study by Eva Koole Student Van Hall Larenstein, Leeuwarden Veeteelt, April II 2016
The aim of the study was to show the effect of selection for Better Life Efficiency & Health on actual cow performance. Performance records were taken from 61.000 genotyped cows from 284 farms that participated
in a data collection program initiated by CRV in 2012. The performance of the best 25% (15.000 cows) for Better Life Efficiency and Health was compared to the least 25% (also 15.000 cows). The results show that remarkable differences exist between these groups of cows, proving that big improvements in herd performance can be achieved by selecting cows and bulls for Better Life Efficiency and Better Life Health.

GENE MAPPING DNA SERVICE FOR YOUR HERD
What CRV offers with Gene Mapping:CRV Ambreed will present you with a report identifying all profiled animals, their parentage and single gene A2/A2 status.
Parentage assignment
› Sire Verification – you need to provide a list of the AB enrolled sires used
› Dam Verification – if the potential dam has been DNA profiled
Report of single gene tests
› Single Gene testing including A2 type beta casein
You will receive a report on the results and in addition, the parentage results will be updated on your herd recording programme (InSight or Minda).
Single gene results will also be loaded for InSight clients.
We endeavor to get the results to you within 6-8 weeks of the lab receiving the sample.

Why DNA test with CRV Ambreed?
No hidden costs: You receive the DNA Profile, Sire Verification*, Dam Verification* and Single Gene status, along with a permanent tag (per animal, excl GST)
Gene Mapping tag and lab fees:DNA Profile/Parentage/A2 Beta Casein $36.75TST Birth Tag Premium $8.12TST Birth Tag Economy $7.40TST Cow Button Tag $3.95Agtrac Technician & Support Service $5.50Submission Kit / 450 $10.00Allflex TST Plier $55.20
It’s your data:
For the animals you profile, we will give you access to the data required for future parental analysis on request.
Accuracy at collection:
Collecting tissue when the tag is applied ensures the TST tube and tag number are matched, which reduces the risk of handling errors and gives you confidence that the DNA profile will be applied to the correct animal.
For herd sampling we offer a comprehensive service, using the Agtrac technicians.
Agtrac Herd Technician Scanning Service – Mature cows only (not required for calves)
It’s critical to get the sample and cow correctly linked. We recommend Agtrac technicians for sampling the herd. They are experienced and can scan the cow number and electronically align it with the tissue sample.
The technician is also responsible for verifying the unique animal identification records in your herd recording software match what is physically in the animal’s ear. If they find this to be incorrect, they will update on farm with all corrections flowing back to your herd recording software. This herd recording validation and correction is another great benefit to you.
Agtrac’s specialist technicians will manage the on-farm DNA collection.
+ Prepare the data files
+ Take the sample
+ Corrects herd recording errors if required
+ Links and updates the data files of each animal
+ Transfers data to the lab
+ Gets samples ready for courier
+ Updates herd recording software with on farm changes (when able)
How to register for the Gene Mapping service Contact your CRV Ambreed field consultant or call our customer support team on 0800 262 733.
Do I need to herd record with CRV Ambreed to use Gene Mapping? No, users of either herd recording programme are able to use the Gene Mapping service.
What if I’ve used non CRV sires? That’s not a problem. We have a large number of sires in our profile database. If we identify we don’t have a sire, we will arrange to have this sire profiled for you, if a semen sample is available. If you have used a natural mating sire, you will need to provide a semen sample (fees apply).
How do I take the sample? It’s the same as applying an eartag.
An easy to use tagger with a TST ear tag (birth or button) inserts the tag in the ear and collects the tissue sample at the same time.
Once the samples have been taken, pop the tubes in the pre addressed courier bag, together with your sample submission form and send them off to the GenomNZ laboratory.
What equipment is needed? You will receive a kit with the appropriate ear tags, service agreement, sample submission forms and courier bag with your order. In addition, you need to order the Allflex tagger pliers.

HEAT DETECTION
Accurate heat detection is critical to the success of artificial insemination (AI). Estrotect™ Heat Detectors provide the most accurate way to detect a cow on heat. They are a business card-sized patch that sticks onto the cow’s rump. With each mount, the surface will gradually turn from silver to a bright colour alerting the farmer she is ready for AI.
Use Estrotect™ Heat Detectors to help teach farm staff to identify when a cow is on heat.
Packs of 50, available in fuchsia, red, yellow, blue, green.
EASY TO USE AND ACCURATE!
• Only one patch per cycle is required compared with the alternative, tail paints and paint sticks, which must be applied or touched up daily.
• While other heat detectors are activated by one mount (sometimes for as little as three seconds) CRV Estrotect™ Heat Detectors work gradually, exposing the indicator colour.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
A disposable electronic heat alert product that when applied, monitors riding activity and works out when a cow is in standing heat.
HEAT PATTERN DETECTED:Flashes red for 26 hours to indicate the cow is ready for artificial insemination.
NO SUBSEQUENT HEAT PATTERN:If once AI’d, the same cow does not come back into heat within 25 days it will flash green indicating possible conception.
SUBSEQUENT HEAT PATTERN:If the same cow returns to heat again it will flash red again.

Take the guesswork out of heat detection
A disposable electronic heat alert product that when applied, monitors riding activity and works out when a cow is in standing heat.
Based on hundreds of hours of research, the smarts inside FlashMate™ are looking for specific patterns of riding activity such as frequency, number and length.
Heat Pattern Detected - FLASHES REDFlashMate™ flashes red for 26 hours once the right heat activity pattern is detected to indicate the cow is ready for artificial insemination
Subsequent Heat Pattern - FLASHES REDIf the same cow returns to heat again FlashMate™ will again flash red.
No Subsequent Heat Pattern - FLASHES GREENOnce AI’d if the same cow does not come back into heat within 25 days, FlashMate™ will flash green to indicate possible conception.
• Easy application – the units are extremely easy to apply and maintain
• Detects multiple heats – will flash red again for the next detected heat cycle if AI has failed.
• Improved accuracy - smarter detection, looking for patterns (length, time, frequency) rather than what could be a single event.
• Operates 24/7 and looks for spikes in contact activity, a large percentage of mounting activity happens at night.
• Low experience required - Needs significantly less understanding and skill in correctly identifying heats, yet achieves what the best human operators are capable of – anyone can do it allowing time off during the mating season for experienced personnel.
• Compatible with tail paint - due to the unit’s location, Flashmate does not interfere with tail paint application.
Accurate monitoring of standing heat is a critical factor for achieving 6 week in calf targets. Other key benefits of FlashMate™ Electronic Heat Detectors include:
