2019 GKCOA VOLLEYBALL MEETING #4
Sun., Sept. 8, 2019Lee’s Summit High School
DROP BOX QUESTIONEMAIL FROM A COACH: I was told last night that my girls could not stand behind the bench to stretch. It says in the rules book that they can be standing as long as they are stretching and moving, so I just wanted to clarify.
DROP BOX ANSWERThe intent of Rule 12-2-7c is to allow a player who is about to enter the match an opportunity to warm up just prior to entering the match. According to p. 53 of the NFHS case book, Situation 12.2.7B, the intent of the rule is not to have players continuously standing in a non-playable area.
There’s no mention in the rule of “standing as long as they are stretching and moving” as you state in your question. So, bench players need to remain seated except for the situation stated in Rule 12-2-7c.
THE CONCUSSION VIDEO• GKCOA has achieved “certified” status with MSHSAA for going
above and beyond with several requirements for officials associations.
• To keep that status, GKCOA shows a MSHSAA approved concussion video so that our members can be aware of situations that may assist us in helping student-athletes.

EXAMPLE OF “OUT, OFF YOU” SITUATION

•Line judges will be a key resource when it happens

ASSIGNOR ANNOUNCEMENTS
•This is the time of pre-season assigning that GKCOA see schools drop from C Gold and Silver to C Gold only. The C Silver assignments are replaced by Varsity Line Judge assignments. If officials see a C Gold assignment with a Varsity assignment and the slots still read Referee 1 and Umpire 1, please David and Don know so they can change to Line Judge 1 and Line Judge 2.
ASSIGNOR ANNOUNCEMENTS
Open dates for which we need officials: 9/12, 10/1, 10/7, 10/9, 10/12, 10/19. Other dates may be available this week and later, depending on whether or not the officials assigned accept the assignments.

HOW DO I GET MORE ASSIGNMENTS?
1.Go to Arbiter. Click on Blocks. If a date is Red or Pink, indicating it is blocked and you are still open, immediately contact Don and David by email. They can remove the Block and get you assigned.
2.Send a weekly email reminder to Don and David of any upcoming open dates. GKCOA receives match changes and turn backs. Your proactive communication helps get these assignments filled faster.
3 OUT OF 5 VARSITY MATCHES THIS SEASON
• When you confirm for a V/JV or C/JV/V evening, clarify whether the varsity is 2/3 or 3/5.
• In the Suburban Conference, ADs are supposed to notify all parties ahead of time of 3/5, but be proactive. Intra-division (to decide conference championship) matches will be 2/3.
• Line judges that only work as line judges that night might not know ahead of time, but if you work a C-team match, then line judge, ask if the varsity match is 3/5 when confirming.
• We don’t anticipate schools deciding to go 3/5 the day of, but please try to be flexible.
• It’s a great opportunity to preview what next season will be like…please accept the assignment with enthusiasm and a great attitude!
