1.0 Introduction
Cambium Inc. (Cambium) was retained by the Mono Centre Brewing Company Ltd. (Client),
care of Gerrits Engineering Ltd. to complete a preliminary hydrogeological assessment of the
property located at 388113 Mono Centre Road, Orangeville (hereafter referred to as the Site).
The Client proposes to construct a brewery at the Site. The brewery will require an estimated
7,000 L of water for daily operations. This preliminary hydrogeological assessment was
completed to determine if the proposed development is feasible and was based upon a review
of available information and a Site visit.
1.1 Site Description
The Site is approximately 21.5 hectares (ha) and is rectangular in shape. At present the Site
exists as rural/forested land with one dwelling located on the property. The dwelling is provided
potable water by a private well. As per the Water Well Information System (WWIS) the well ID
number is believed to be 1701067 (however this requires confirmation).
The topography of the Site is flat to hummocky, with the highest point being located centrally in
the property and generally slopes down to the northeast. Available information suggests that
the ground surface elevation of the Site varies between approximately 443 metres above sea
level (masl) and 420 masl.
Site is bound to the south by Mono Centre Road and to the east by 5 Line East. Rural and
rural residential land use borders the Site on all sides.
Surface water mapping indicates that the headwaters of a small watercourse are found in the
northeastern corner of the Site and flow northwards. The Site boundaries have been outlined
on Figure 1.

2.0 Methodology
This section outlines the methodology to complete the preliminary hydrogeological
assessment.
2.1 Site Visit
On November 3, 2019 Cambium staff visited the Site to take water level and depth
measurements of the existing supply well and to complete a preliminary flow test.
The supply well was installed through a concrete dug well casing (i.e., well pit) and insulating
foam was sprayed on top of the well head. The well head was not observable or accessible;
therefore a water level depth and well depth could not be measured. Pictures of the well head
and spray foam insulation are attached in Appendix A.
2.2 Desktop Review
A desktop review of available information was completed to characterize the general
hydrogeological conditions. The information reviewed as part of this assessment included the
following sources:
Regulated areas, as mapped by the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA).
Sensitive source water protection areas, as outlined in the Source Protection Information Atlas (SPIA).
Proximal drinking water wells, as per the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECP) WWIS.

3.0 Geological and Hydrogeological Setting
The Site is located within the physiographic region known as the Horseshoe Moraines. The
Horseshoe Moraines are oriented in a horseshoe shaped pattern that flanks the upland region
of the Niagara cuesta. Meltwater stream deposits give the region two chief landform
components:
a) Irregular, stony knobs and ridges which are compose mostly of till and with some sand
and gravel deposits (kames).
b) Pitted sand and gravel terraces and, swampy valley floors.
In the area of the Site the moraines lie along the brow and slopes of the Niagara escarpment.
In general the soil composition of the moraines in the area of the Site is comprised of coarse,
stony till (Chapman, L.J. and D.F. Putnam, 1984).
According to Map 2556 of the Ontario Survey (Barnett, P.J.,Cowan, W.R. and Henry, A.P.,
1991) the soils in the area of the Site comprise of ice-contact stratified deposits consisting of
sand and gravel, minor silt, clay and till.
According to the Bedrock Geology of Ontario, southern sheet; Ontario Geological Survey, Map
2544, scale 1:1 000 000 (Ontario Geological Survey, 1991), the regional bedrock in the area of
the Site consists of the Queenston Shale Formation.
3.1 Regulated and Sensitive Hydrogeological Areas
Regulated areas mapping was accessed, as provided by the NVCA. The mapping indicates
that regulated areas cover a small portion of the Site in the northeastern corner of the property.
These areas correspond with the surface water feature present in this area.
The SPIA mapping indicates that the Site is located within a Significant Groundwater Recharge
Area (SGRA).
Mapping generated from the NVCA and the SPIA is attached in Appendix B.

3.2 Water Well Records
According to the MECP WWIS mapping there are 13 water well records located within
approximately 500 m of the Site boundaries.
Of the 13 water well records, 11 detailed the installation of drilled wells, 1 detailed the
installation of a bored/dug well and 1 detailed the abandonment of a well.
The stratigraphy information provided in the well records indicates that the overburden
generally consisted of coarse grained sediments; however there were regular occurrences of
fine grained (silt and clay) lenses at depth. All of the drilled wells were installed in shale
bedrock. The following conclusions were drawn from a review of the water well records:
The depth of overburden ranged between 18.60 mbgs and 70.12 mbgs (average of
37.47 mbgs).
The total depth of the drilled wells varied between 44.21 mbgs and 127.44 mbgs
(average of 77.11 mbgs).
Groundwater within the shale bedrock was encountered between the depths of 21.34
mbgs and 96.04 mbgs (average 53.81 mbgs).
Static water levels reported from the drilled wells ranged between depths of 10.67 mbgs
and 36.59 mbgs (average 22.64 mbgs).
The recommended flow rate of the drilled wells ranged from 0.5 gallons per minute
(gpm) to 10 gpm (average of 3.68 gpm (approximately 11 L/min)).
These data indicate that there is a bedrock aquifer in the area that can produce a reasonably
reliable source of water. A map of the water well records within 500 m of the Site is attached
as Figure 2.

3.2.1 On-Site Supply Well
The on-site supply well could not be accessed because the wellhead was installed in a well pit,
and since there was insulating foam covering the wellhead. The well pit casing was measured
to be approximately 1 m across and the foam was measured approximately 2.1 m down from
the top of casing. The well is located adjacent the southwest corner of the dwelling and is
found at the approximate coordinates of 577610 m E and 4877797 m N, Zone 17T. The
available well record (assumed to be number 1701067) indicates that the well was installed in
shale bedrock to a depth of 50.30 mbgs. The recommended flow rate was 4 gpm
(approximately 15 L/min) and the static water level upon completion was 13.72 mbgs. Well
record number 1701067 is attached in Appendix C.
The location of the well is outlined on Figure 1. The well ID number should be confirmed at a
later date, if possible.

4.0 Conclusions and Recommendations
The conclusions outlined below are based on the assumption that the well record data outlined
in the MECP WWIS is accurate and valid for the Site.
The average flow rate of the wells in the area of the Site was 11 L/min. The assumed well
record for the on-site well reported a flow rate of 15 L/min. The anticipated daily water
withdrawal rate for the proposed brewery is 7,000 L/day. The reported yields indicate that the
daily demand can be achieved. The estimated pumping time required to produce 7,000 L
ranges from 8 to 11 hours of continuous water withdrawal per day (considering yields of 11 to
15 L/min).
The properties neighboring the Site are developed as agricultural land or rural residential
dwellings. The combined water withdrawal stress on local aquifer resources from land use
adjacent the Site is considered low.
Due to the availability of groundwater resources and that existing water withdrawal stress is
low, the proposed daily water withdrawal rate of 7,000 L/day is considered sustainable and will
not likely influence adjacent groundwater users.
A Permit To Take Water (as prescribed by Section 34 of the Ontario Water Resources Act) will
not be required since the daily water withdrawal rate of the brewery will be less than 50,000
L/day.
The total combined daily sewage loading rate of the Site is anticipated to be less than 10,000
L/day; therefore an Environmental Compliance Approval from the MECP will not be required.
The results of the preliminary desktop assessment indicate that developing the Site as a
brewery with a water demand rate of 7,000 L/day is sustainable and is not anticipated to
influence adjacent groundwater users.
