SUMMER SEASON 2018

2 – 3

It looks like Spring finally has arrived just in time for Summer, and we’ve got plenty of summer treats in store as our 2018 programme unfurls like those long-awaited buds! Our 2018 inhouse programme got off to a tremendous start with the success of Gare St Lazare’s HOW IT IS: PART ONE, by Samuel Beckett, and the national tour of Kevin Barry’s critically acclaimed stage play Autumn Royal which is now underway.

Our blockbuster Cork Midsummer Festival offering, in which we partner with top Irish producers Landmark Productions, the Abbey and the Festival, is the world premiere stage adaptation of Louise O’Neill’s award-winning novel Asking for It. This new version of Louise O’Neill’s devastating story, directed by Annabelle Comyn, shines an unflinching light on the experience of a young woman whose life is changed forever by a horrific act of violence. With this co-production, we’re backing extraordinary artists and superb new work. Make no mistake, this world premiere is a must-see event this festival and tickets are already selling fast!

I return to the rehearsal room this July, working again with some of the brilliant creatives who have contributed to our productions in recent years, and a superb cast to bring you a brand new production of Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West. Martin’s film and theatre work has won multiple accolades, from Oscars and

Golden Globes, to Oliviers and Tonys and this play is undeniable evidence of his knack with one-liners, his comic timing, and his old school plotting skills. Dealing in the blackest comedy, this play is sibling rivalry pushed to a deadly edge.

Autumn highlights include the world premiere staging of John O’Brien’s brand new opera The Nightingale and the Rose, a stunning new opera based on Oscar Wilde’s timeless short story, and the fairytale of all fairytales: Cinderella returns for our annual Christmas panto.

And that’s just the inhouse programme! Dotted throughout these major diary dates are a host of brilliant stand-up comics and live music shows: Deirdre O’Kane, Colin Murphy, A Spoonful of Sherman, Frankie’s Guys, Camilla Griehsel’s Mamasongue. We’re supporting excellent locally made theatre with the likes of Erin Connolly and the Children of Lir, Killing Stella and Sonia; we’re breaking new ground and hosting thrilling performances from top notch Irish dance artists Junk Ensemble and Philip Connaughton; and maintaining tradition by bringing you the best in touring theatre and opera with titles such as: Maeve Binchy’s Minding Frankie, Shout! The Musical, The Good Father, Looking Deadly, The Tales of Hoffmann, The Mai, The Collector, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and plenty more besides. It’s all held within the pages of this brochure, so dive in – it’s all for you!

GRAFFITI/FIGHTING WORDS CORK PRESENTS

Six months ago, the Young Playwrights Programme brought together nine aspiring young writers to develop and hone script-writing skills, supported by professional playwright mentors John McCarthy and Katie Holly at Graffiti Theatre Company as part of Fighting Words Cork.

The project culminates in a presentation of their work as staged readings, involving professional actors and directors, at The Everyman for Cork Midsummer Festival, in association with the Landmark Productions and Everyman premiere of Asking for It. The process which these young people have engaged with was truly transformative, far more powerful than the simple assembly of words on pages.

ROUGH MAGIC THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

A Night on the Town is variety show with a unique sense of humour. This delightful uplifting story is told through musical theatre style performances, and a variety of theatrical entertainments.

Our unwitting hero enters the audition stage to discover, as the applause begins and the lights go up, that this is in fact a show. The tickets have been sold and the audience is waiting!

Rough Magic presents a world premiere - Arthur Riordan’s vibrant stage adaptation of James Joyce's seminal novel, brought to life by a dynamic new creative ensemble of actors and designers under Ronan Phelan’s direction.

Written during the political and artistic explosion of the early twentieth century, this is Joyce’s manifesto; the dazzling debut of Ireland’s epic re-inventor and architect of the English language.

SOLDIER STILLJUNK ENSEMBLE PRESENTS

Following a stellar run at Dublin Fringe Festival 2017, Junk Ensemble takes to The Everyman stage with its powerful work Soldier Still.

A stirring, multi-disciplinary piece of dance theatre as important as it is sublime. With raw power and palpable elegance, Soldier Still addresses violence and how the military refashions men and women into killers against their natural instincts. This is Junk Ensemble’s most visually focused work to date, delivered with the coldness and immediacy of a report.
