Review of the year

We are immensely grateful to our donors over the last 23 years who have enabled us to transform the lives and communities of children from some of the poorest parts of the world. The Mission continues.

A day in the life of a student at the Nepalese Village

Through our Children’s Villages in Nepal, India and Zambia we provide a programme of holistic child-centred development that enables amazing children born in the poorest rural areas to achieve their full potential. These young people are now going on to become a vibrant network of teachers, nurses and entrepreneurs who are finding ways to help their communities.

A key focus for 2018 was measuring the impact of our programmes in greater detail and discovering more about what our students have gone on to do. Many of our alumni are helping to educate new generations of disadvantaged children like them by volunteering at the Children’s Villages, supporting a sibling’s education, or becoming a teacher.

In Zambia, over 40 are working as mobile learning coaches providing foundational maths and literacy education to children in refugee camps and rural communities through our partner, Edulution. Alumni Foundations in Thailand and Nepal – which we helped set up – are now supporting the next generation of children through their own fundraising initiatives, with 100 children being sponsored in Thailand and 24 in Nepal.

Esther Tembo

PestalozziWorld alumna Esther Tembo has proven herself to be unstoppable. An alumna of the Zambian Village, Esther started her career as a coach with our learning partner, Edulution. She went back to her home district of Luangwa and took on the challenge of working in one of Edulution’s most rural centres at Mangelengele Primary. Following her success there she moved on to lead the literacy centre at Lundazi Primary.

An award-winning coach, Esther is now leading a team of 6 fellow Pestalozzi alumni at Mayukwayukwa Refugee Camp, teaching 900 Angolan and Congolese refugees. Before taking on this latest challenge, Esther got her motorcycle license so she can easily move from centre to centre within the cluster.

“Pestalozzi is where I learned how to give back to others on a grander scale,” she says. “And why I have gone to Mayukwayukwa refugee camp to continue serving children I feel really need my help.”

Our scholars tell us what Pestalozzi means to them

“Pestalozzi is where I learned how to give back to others on a grander scale,”

Mamta KumariINDIAN VILLAGE

‘Being in Pestalozzi has enabled me to learn English and to get a good education. I have learnt lots of skills, like sewing, cooking and gardening. I have received a lot of care and support from my friends and the staff and I feel very secure in the Village. I will miss Pestalozzi when I graduate as it is my second home. However, I feel I have been given the confidence to cope in the outside world’

Priyanshu Raj INDIAN VILLAGE

‘To me Pestalozzi means not only excelling in academics but also the overall development of a being, whether it means in terms of hands or heart. It also teaches us the real meaning of life. The environment and people that I have been living with for the last 8 years have helped me grow into a better human being.’

Mapela ElishaZAMBIAN VILLAGE

‘Pestalozzi is like a family where people from different walks of life live together under the same roof and are guided by similar values. The Pestalozzi philosophy of the head, heart and hands does not only enable us to acquire knowledge but also equips us with various survival skills. This enables every Pestalozzi student to be a reasonable member of their society.’

Tej Saud NEPALESE VILLAGE

‘Pestalozzi doesn’t just help in academics but also helps in the development of an individual. It has made me an ideal person. It has made my life bright and has helped me to achieve my goals. Pestalozzi encourages me to be disciplined, kind and helpful. It has also taught me the value of staying together in harmony with people of different thinking.’

Samakeche Mary ZAMBIAN VILLAGE

‘Besides embracing and promoting academic excellence, to me Pestalozzi means acknowledging the works of the hands and also upholding the values of respect, love and care towards others. Equally important, Pestalozzi also means being able to see the hidden capacities in the abandoned and thus help them unleash their potential.’

Pramila Thami NEPALESE VILLAGE

‘To me Pestalozzi is not an organization but a loving and caring home. It is an enormous place where the most important aspects of life such as being kind, grateful and understanding each other are taught with encouragement. It has given me the best education with proper facilities which I was unable to get in my previous house. If I was not in Pestalozzi, I would be working in the fields helping my parents without the slightest knowledge about this wonderful phase of my life.’

The Linking Efforts Alumni Fund (LEAF) was launched in 2018 and was the brainchild of two Indian Village alumni, Rakesh Aswal and Anudev Jayara. Aiming to strengthen the ties between the alumni and the Indian Village they came up with the idea of a small alumni fund and it all started with a cup of chai!

As they were coming back from attending a Village Board meeting, the two stopped for a quick drink. As conversation ensued, they realised that most of the alumni are still not financially well off so it would be hard for them to contribute in a big monetary way. Then it struck them, if they could spend 30 rupees on chai, wouldn’t it be great for each alumnus to contribute the same small amount every month towards the Village.

The idea was that the money raised this way would bring alumni closer and give them an opportunity to complete the Pestalozzi circle of success. The fund could be used towards providing small items such as stationary, computers, library books, sports equipment etc. In the long run, LEAF could also serve as an interest-free loan provider with the condition that money is returned within three months. On the fun side, the fund could also be used for planning trips and other adventurous activities during alumni get-togethers.

With the first fund collected, LEAF was able to purchase books for the newly built library at the Indian Village in 2018. It was a sign of hope for much to come!

Pestalozziworld Annual Review 2018

PestalozziWorld Children’s Trust (PWCT) in the UK is the coordinating entity of PestalozziWorld, a working alliance of several organisations inspired by the educational philosophy and the life of the Swiss social reformer Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827).

The Pestalozzi Villages are monitored regularly by the Trustees and audited locally.

Annual scholarship costs were $1,465 (£1,100) a year per child at the Villages for board, travel, tuition and all other costs. Annual cost per student for the mobile learning programme is $120 (£90) a year. Total expenditure in 2018 was approximately $1.6million. Expenditure for capital, mobile learning centres and the Pestalozzi Education Centre of $0.94m million was funded primarily by the Pestalozzi Overseas Children’s Foundation in Switzerland.

Our funding comes from the private sector, including the founders, directors and trustees, other individuals, private foundations, and corporate donors. Copies of the audited accounts are available on request from the respective offices. PWCT’s accounts are also available on the Charity Commission website www.charitycommission.gov.uk

Registered fundraising charities operate in the USA, Switzerland and Ireland. The Swiss Trust makes grants directly to the national operating trusts, mainly in connection with the capital costs in Zambia and India, while the US and Irish funds are managed through the UK Trust. Trustees do not receive any remuneration or expense reimbursement from the Trust. All expenses for the fundraising and administration Trusts (including staff, travel and administration) are met by funds specifically provided by the Trustees or through investment income.

Funding Review

The impact of PestalozziWorld has grown each year since its establishment in 1995 to advance the education of children in Asia and Africa using the Pestalozzi principles of Head, Heart and Hands.

Copies of the audited accounts are available on request from the respective offices.
