As coach for 2017, led the NY Empire to a seven win season, finishing third in the League standings

Gigi Fernandez, born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, burst onto the tennis scene by reaching the NCAA finals as a freshman, then turning professional in 1983 and becoming Puerto Rico's first female professional athlete in any sport

Gigi’s illustrious career included winning 2 Olympic Gold Medals and an astounding 71 titles on the WTA tour including 2 singles, 52 doubles and 17 Grand Slam doubles titles. Fernandez is recognized as one of the best doubles players of all-time

Fernandez was named Puerto Rican Athlete of the Century and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010

Gigi now spends the majority of her time

advocating for and teaching her doubles

methodology, The Gigi Method, to doubles

enthusiasts throughout the country

The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center hosted the New York Empire in 2017, marking the first time the National Tennis Center ever saw WTT action on its grounds. 5

The New York Empire will feature seven (7) home matches in 2018 when the nation’s appetite for world-class tennis reaches its peak –between The Championships at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows
