“IGNITING INNOVATION INITIATIVES”

How can you become more innovative as an organisation? Do you know what you don’t know? How do you know? And what do alcohol distillation and innovation have in common aside from the fact that either could ‘blow up in your face’ at any time?

These are just a few of the questions Andrew will cover in his keynote, a keynote that is guaranteed to be nothing like anything you’ve even seen before!

Andrew is passionate about dispelling the common myth that ‘Innovation takes place in an innovation funnel’ – an attitude that often constrains organisational thinking and excludes valuable input from a much broader eco-system. Using a colourful metaphor (not a method) littered with real world anecdotes, Andrew will provide insight into the actions and activities required to engage a team, department or an entire organisation to move thinking from ‘innovation is done over there’ to ‘together we can become more innovative’.

When looking for ways to become a truly innovative business, this keynote is a must. You will go back home, not only with some interesting insights on new innovations but also, and foremost, with actual ideas and inspiration to BE more innovative.

ABOUT ANDREW VORSTERHaving spent over 30 years driving innovation across a wide range of industries, Andrew has built a reputation as a passionate technologist, innovator and disruptor. This includes an 8-year tenure as VP of Technology Research & Development at Visa Europe, where he put into practice his accumulated years of experience to establish a technology centre of excellence. With a background in research and a qualification in foresight, he is best known for ‘Igniting Innovation Initiatives’ through his briefings, keynotes and workshops in his work as an Innovation Catalyst. The bulk of his time is spent scanning for and scouting changes in the Technologies, Innovations, Patents and Start-ups (TIPS) behind the trends driving new business models and shaping consumer behaviour today. He contemplates the impact and implications these will have on society, industry and individuals, weaving these into colourful and credible stories designed to inspire both established organisations and start-ups across the world, helping them to envision the range of multiple possible futures fuelled, accelerated and enabled by technology. As an enthusiastic storyteller, Andrew main message is:

“The story of the future is not yet written. Don’t wait to read about it as history made by someone else. Start writing your own story of the future today!”

STAYING ON TOP OF NEW FOOD SAFETY REGULATIONS

You’ll learn about new food regulations for labels and packaging that affect your current and future business. This important area of discussion can be challenging, but it is of growing importance as the EU and individual countries continue to roll out an increasing number of food safety regulations. Emphasis is on what printers need to communicate to customers about the food safety aspects of their production operations. This includes how packaging can be produced to minimise or eliminate migration of hazardous substances, and a discussion on packaging materials, inks and barrier substances. You can expect info that will help you stay abreast of new and emerging regulations, and that will clarify which regulations are most relevant to food safety.

EXPLORING THE CREATIVITY OF DIGITAL

It is commonly acknowledged that moving to a digital workflow delivers benefits in terms of faster turnaround times, cost-effective production of short runs, and improved customer service. What is often overlooked are other advantages such as customization, versioning and personalization that are increasingly demanded by today’s consumers. In this workshop, you get actionable ideas on how to take digital production to the next level, and help brands be more creative in ensuring that their products stand out on the shelf and are relevant to the target audience. You’ll learn about creative ways to design packaging using digital technologies, and how easily brands can leverage different messages based on region, season, special events, and even down to the individual consumer.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRINT TECHNOLOGY

As a label and packaging converter, you have the choice between a variety of digital printing technologies, but which one fits your business best? This is your moment to find out as we’ll discuss the results of an in-depth analysis of different technologies – liquid and dry toner as well as UV and water-based inkjet – and show you the scientific facts. This workshop offers a technology-agnostic approach to the most optimal digital technology for specific applications in the prime label and packaging markets (wine & spirits, beer & beverages, food, health & beauty, pharma, chemicals and durables), taking into account quality basics, substrate compatibility and process reliability as well as characteristics such as look & feel, durability and sustainability.

STRATEGIZING YOUR APPROACH TOWARDS DIGITAL

If you are considering adding digital printing to your labels and packaging production portfolio, or if you need to increase the amount of digital technology you now have, join us for this workshop where we will provide guidance that can help you make sound business decisions in a challenging and fast-paced market. Not only will you learn about the latest market trends and drivers in the labels and packaging industry, but you will also be able to explore a number of opportunities for business growth that digital printing enables. We also provide you with an educational white paper that will make it easier for you to share the great information you received in this workshop with the folks back home.

DIGITAL VS. FLEXO… A PERFECT MATCH

Struggling with whether to use digital printing or stick to flexography in your narrow web label business? Struggle no more! Actually, the two are complementary solutions, each with its own benefits and advantages. In this workshop, you’ll learn how they complement each other, and what the best ways are to leverage the power of each. We’ll share real-life experiences that help in the decision-making process – when is it more efficient to use digital versus flexo or offset? How can the addition of digital affect the efficiency and profitability of your business? How can you acquire more customers by combining both in your production platform? You’ll get the answers to these and any other questions you have in this workshop.

OPTIMIZING YOUR PRODUCTION COSTS

You’ve already implemented a digital production workflow and reaped its benefits, but how do you know you are operating in the most efficient way? If you are now seeking to continuously improve your operations by stripping out more time, waste and cost to improve margins and service levels, then this workshop is for you. We’ll share many tips and tricks derived from the extensive experience of Xeikon Café partners. This includes how you can reduce toner or ink usage without any sacrifice in quality, improve your quality control operations, and be alerted proactively prior to an actual problem occurring. At the end of this workshop, you will go home with a matrix of ideas with expected cost savings.

Xeikon Café Academy provides a technical and educational forum centred around innovative end-use applications and related to all aspects of digital production. The interactive Workshops are designed to help you acquire knowledge and provide insights on return-on-investment (ROI). IN-MOULD & BLOW-MOULD

An important decoration technique, often used for food containers and bottles. Brands can use digital printing to enhance these high-impact labels and better target audiences while taking advantage of waste minimisation and faster time to market. There is however a lot of mystery and complexity around this application. This session unravels the mystery and shares how digital production can be implemented as a complement to conventional printing.

PAPER CUPS

Ever considered for how long you hold a coffee cup? It’s an average of 7 minutes. Add to that an attractive design and it is no wonder paper cups are becoming an ever more powerful marketing tool. In this session, you get the technical basics on how a paper cup is made, and learn how to leverage digital printing to unleash unlimited possibilities for advertising on paper cups, while ensuring food safety compliance.

SELF-ADHESIVE LABELS: EP DRY TONER

When producing self-adhesive labels where food safety and quality are key, dry toner digital printing offers many benefits. Learn about the specific requirements needed when using dry toner for food, beverage, wine & spirits and pharma applications, which all come with their very own aesthetic and functional requirements. In this session, you get the full story on end-to-end digital production with dry toner.

WRAPAROUND LABELS

Big brands have shown that even for mass products, customization can hugely impact the consumer experience. Digital production not only allows to make products more appealing, it also enables shorter runs, faster turnaround times and better economics to optimize your production. This session details how it works for the broad variety of products that uses wraparound labels: frozen food & ice cream, dairy products, fresh fruits, etc.

HEAT TRANSFER LABELS

In this session, learn how to leverage digital printing for the production of heat transfer applications, a specific decoration technique where the image is printed on a special substrate and subsequently transferred onto end-use applications, like buckets (industrial products), and pens or penholders (promotional products). Specific attention will be paid to substrate choices in light of the fact the image is transferred by means of heat and pressure.

TAX STAMPS – CUSTOMER CASE BY FEDOPRESS

Products such as alcohol and tobacco often feature fiscal and duty stamps, a specialised market segment where security, anti-counterfeiting and traceability are highly important. Fedopress, official print supplier to the Belgian FPS Finance, details why digital became their most efficient means of producing on-demand stamps and how integrated solutions allow them to do so cost-effectively. A unique chance to get insights in a live security application.

SELF-ADHESIVE LABELS: UV INKJET

The durability and tactile look & feel of UV inkjet brings major advantages to labels where high white ink opacity and resistance to high temperature, UV light and chemicals are key. But does it require different handling when it comes to workflow, print media, consumables and finishing? This session delves into UV inkjet technology to answer that question and examine applications for household, industrial, durables and health & beauty.

WET-GLUE LABELS

Wet-glue is still an important decoration technique (+35% of the label market), particularly in the food and beverage world because of its traditional high quality and lower cost for longer print runs. We will explore the possibilities opened up by digital printing for wet-glue labels such as customer engagement and cost-effective production of small label lots and customised products, and bring clarity on technical requirements.

FOLDING CARTON

Brands need their packaging designs changed frequently to respond rapidly to market demands, address seasonality, regional differences and even personalization. As a result, also folding cartons need to be produced in shorter runs. Digital printing helps meet these challenges, while making prototyping or test marketing faster and more affordable. This session provides a view of end-to-end folding carton digital production, including finishing.

LEAFLETS & BOOKLETS

The information brands have to share with consumers is increasing while the space to do so is getting smaller. A valuable solution are leaflets, booklets or peel & reveal labels – an important companion to packaging although often overlooked when evaluating printing technologies. But for any package printed digitally, the accompanying inserts also need to be produced timely and efficiently. This workshop shares best practices on how to do that.
