The Great Canadian Healthcare Debate offers health leaders a unique opportunity to debate and pass policy resolutions that reflect the current Canadian health system context and address the most pressing issues facing the healthcare system and health leaders today.
Our challenge to youThis year, NHLC decided to take a deeper dive in the top motions adopted for the last three years. The 2018 debate will be an opportunity to update on our progress and to further advance the past motion themes: mental health, Indigenous health and seniors health. Collectively, we will determine the most pressing next steps within these key policy areas. A lively debate will provide an opportunity to contribute to the discussion and provide advice on the path forward.
We are calling on Canadian health leaders - from emerging to seasoned - to propose compelling and potentially controversial policy resolutions aimed at making an important impact on the health system. Together, we will prioritize those with the most power and impact that move forward.
To develop your motions, our key question to you is what are the most pressing issues that must be addressed in either mental health, Indigenous health or seniors’ health?
Any other key policy priority - the Opioid Crisis and response, national pharmacare, a national dementia strategy - can be used to submit your motion, as long as it links to either mental health, Indigenous health or seniors health.

Selection of motions to be debated All motions will be reviewed by the Great Canadian Healthcare Debate Policy Resolution Committee, chaired by Wendy Nicklin, CHE, FACHE (see list of Committee members below).
Motions will be reviewed, based on a scan of the current policy environment, to ensure they are a priority for discussion, debate and resolution at NHLC.
To be considered for inclusion, the motion should:
• beofsignificanceatthenationallevel;orhavethepotentialtocreatetransformationofservicedeliveryattheprovincialornationallevel;
• havethepotentialtorevealnewinsightsor tocreatepositivepolicychange;
• haveabroadimpactonthepopulation, healthcaredeliveryorganizationsand/orsystemperformance;
• havethepotentialtogeneratepublic/media interestanddebate;and
• beactionablewiththepotentialtocreate concreteoutcomesinthefirstyearandinthelong-term (e.g., opportunities for HealthCareCAN andCCHLtomovetheagendaforward).

Follow-up of adopted resolutions The co-hosts of the National Health Leadership Conference – the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) and HealthCareCAN – are committed to ensuring that priority motions adopted at the Great Canadian Healthcare Debate move forward.
InJune2019,HealthCareCAN and CCHL will report back to NHLC delegates on actions and initiatives related to priority motions from the 2018 Debate. Adopted resolutions may result in, for example, activities related to:
• awarenessraisingaroundprioritypolicyissues;• theengagementofhealthleaderstotakeaction;• consensusbuildingandsharedresponsibilityamongstakeholdersformovingforward;and,
• theestablishmentofissuespecific/timelimited strategic alliances.
