A LETTER FROM KELLYAs the Kelly Brush Foundation continues growing its scope and impact, reflecting on 2018 and looking forward to 2019 for me isn’t about statistics or numbers, it’s about our community and the people who make it vibrant. I will remember 2018 for the people: new applicants to our Active Fund who became the newest members of the KBF family, new partners and the communities they represent, new riders (and golfers!) at the Kelly Brush Ride, and new volunteers and supporters at our first Inspire!SanFrancisco. San Francisco was a huge highlight of my year and a good example of the power of the KBF community. There were host committee members, sponsors, and volunteers who were just introduced to the KBF this year, yet spent time, energy, and money to help grow and support this event and our mission. Since then, they have invited each other to holiday parties and forged friendships. It is just so awesome and rewarding for me to see. I’m excited for all of the opportunities ahead in 2019: we’re growing our awesome team, developing and exploring innovative programs that could really expand the reach of our mission (stay tuned!), and we’re working to self-reflect and improve everything we do. Whether you are a close friend of mine since before my injury, someone new to the organization that I haven’t had a chance to meet in person yet, or someone touched by the work of our incredible supporters and staff, I cannot thank you enough for being part of the Kelly Brush Foundation community.

Let’s make 2019 awesome!

OUR MISSIONTo inspire and empower people with spinal cord injuries to live active and engaged lives.

ABOUT KBFAn active lifestyle fuels a healthy body and mind, allowing us to be the most full version of ourselves.

For those who have experienced a spinal cord injury, being active can feel out of reach. The obstacles are real: physical, financial, and even the belief it is possible.

The Kelly Brush Foundation (KBF) is dedicated to a making active lifestyles a reality for those who have experienced a spinal cord injury. We offer the inspiration to believe and the grants to enable anyone to buy the equipment they need to get out and go. But the KBF funds more that just recreation, because when you’re out there on the hill, road or trail, as your heart rate rises and you feel the wind on your face, disability fades away. An active lifestyle forges connections with others - both new friends and old, in and out of a chair.

The KBF was founded by Kelly and her family after Kelly was injured in 2006 at an NCAA alpine ski race. Since our founding, we’ve been committed to ski racing safety and will continue to advocate and provide resources so that every ski racer is training and competing on the safest possible venues.

Laura from Michigan

Laura embarked on a cross country cycling trip in 2016, but while she pursued her dream of riding her bike from coast-to-coast Laura was struck by a car and paralyzed. She applied for an Active Fund grant for a racing chair from the KBF because she missed running; both the quiet, meditative quality of solo runs and the community aspect of spending time outside with friends and family.

The KBF awarded Laura a grant in Fall 2018 to help her get back outside on her own terms and regain a sense of kinship that had felt lost to her after her injury.

“I rode the racing chair with my friend running beside me and it felt like we were part of the same sport again.”

Tim from Massachusetts

Tim has always felt at home high in the mountains, and moved to Aspen, Colorado to work as a ski patroller after college. In February of 2011 Tim was completing a sweep of the mountain at the end of the day, and was in a ski accident that left him paralyzed.

Tim was awarded a grant to purchase a bi-ski in Fall 2018 to help him get back out in the mountains he loves.

“This bi-ski is what I need to spend more time with the people and places that make me, well... ‘me’!”

11

Anna from California

In 2017, the summer after Anna completed her residency program, she was enjoying a day at the beach when she was struck by falling rocks and paralyzed from her injuries. She immediately got into adaptive sports for both the physical and social benefits they offered.

Anna received a KBF Active Fund grant to purchase a tennis chair this fall, after explaining how tennis brought her joy and community.

“I played tennis before my injury and miss playing with my mom, dad, brother, sister, and friends. I would love to be part of a team/group playing sports.”

Loren from Wisconsin

Loren was involved in a vehicle accident in 2015 that left him paralyzed. As an out-doorsman and father of two young chil-dren Loren was struggling to find a way to get back outside and keep up with his kids after his accident. He applied for a grant to purchase a handcycle that would allow him to cover more ground and explore bike paths with his kids.

“I want to ride bikes with my kids like any other dad. They did not sign up to have a dad with spinal cord injury. I want to make sure they are better people because of it.”

KBF awarded Loren a grant to buy a Force 3 handcycle, to help ensure that his injury doesn’t keep him from getting outside with the people he loves.

OUR SAFETY MISSION We innovated and increased the impact of our ski racing safety mission in 2018. In addition to our traditional Ski Racing Safety Equipment Grant program and our early-season advocacy campaign, we added two important new initiatives.

New 2018 Initiatives:Alpine Competition and Safety Consultant: a partnership between the KBF and US Ski & Snowboard to create a new position to serve as a national resource regarding issues of safety in alpine ski racing.

Stop the Bleed: we teamed up with the parent of a seriously injured high school racer to increase awareness of the risk of severe cuts and to distribute over 170 Bleeding Control Kits to alpine programs around the country.

Stop the Bleed Initiative• 174 Bleeding Control Kits distributed• 20 Instructional Seminars

Alpine Competition & Safety Consultant• 22 Safety Presentations given worldwide• 1 new safety module in US Ski & Snowboard Coaches Education Curriculum

Advocacy• 322 Ski Racing Safety Posters distributed• 15 Ski Racing Safety Banners distributed to grant recipients
