The Next Level of SELExciting things are happening in the realmof social-emotional learning (SEL). SEL hasbeen a focus in some buildings, with someteachers and administrators for awhile now,but this year we are taking SEL to the nextlevel. We have a wonderful committee comprisedof school counselors, psychologists, teachers, administrators, communitymembers and parents. Our task will be to
Mindfulness Based Stress ReductionGroups and found helpful ways to managetheir own stress and learned some newskills to bring into the classroom.Other teachers began a mindfulnesspractice of their own and brought mindfulmoments to the classroom. All of this hasbeen well researched and shown to havepositive impact on learning and academicscores. This year, we will continue to weavemindfulness into K-12 for staff andstudents.

The mission of the South Whidbey Academy’s 9th
– 12th
grade program is to encourage and enable our
students to be ready and capable to meet the challenges of life in school and beyond.
We offer a high school program with common goals that include:
· development of a more supportive classroom environment
· reducing the student / teacher ratio
· enhanced school / parent communication
· creating opportunities to meet students where they are at regarding their educational needs
In addition to SWA classes, SWA students also participate in courses South Whidbey High School. This
blended model helps prepare our students for the rigor and responsibility of school and life success.

No Child Left Inside
The South Whidbey School District is partnering with Young Women
Empowered (Y-WE) after Y-WE was awarded a "No Child Left Inside"
grant through the Washington State Parks and Recreation
Commission.
According to Susie Richards, S.W. Elementary Assistant Principal and No Child Left Inside Program
Coordinator for the district, the program will include four expeditionary learning experiences during the
school year. The first program will be based at Camp Casey Conference Center and will include the
entire 8th grade, engaging in a range of environmentally focused learning rotations.
The next expedition will be held at Deception Pass State Park in the Spring, and two additional programs
will be held in Seattle, engaging in urban focused environmental and social justice programs. These
programs will include 50 middle school girls who will be enrolled in the "No Child Left Inside"
enrichment classes that will be held each Wednesday. The classes will be led by Susan Milan and
Charlene Ray, both experienced environmental educators.
Richards noted "We are thrilled to once again be partnering with Young Women Empowered. Two years
ago, we engaged in the first No Child Left Inside program, working with South Whidbey Academy High
School students and it is exciting to be continuing the program, focusing on our middle school students.
We have a wide range of additional local partners who will be working with our students, including
Whidbey Island Conservation District, Sound Water Stewards, Fort Casey State Park staff, Deception
Pass State Park Staff, Whidbey Watershed Stewards, Charlene Ray, Ann Linnea, Maribeth Crandell
(Island Transit) and Dana Sawyer of the Veteran's Resource Center."
