LEGGOTT COLLEGE
WELCOME TO JLC
From our Principal, Leon Riley and Chair of Governors, Andy Pascoe.
The college continues to inspire new cohorts of learners to achieve their potential and progress to a vast array of
universities and world leading employers. We are a hub that attracts learners both locally, regionally and nationally. I am very proud of the achievements of the 2018/19 cohort. They not only
excelled academically but got themselves involved in a huge array of activities. The college not only focuses on academic
progress but provides a wide holistic experience learners can get themselves involved in over 40 additional activities. We aim to ensure learners have the skills that will support them in their
future employment or progression routes.
I would like to thank all our key stakeholders that have supported us to enhance learner experience or provide our
learners with work experience or relevant industry updates. Without you JLC would be a lesser light.

SPOTLIGHT ONGovernorsPaul Raistrick I was elected as Parent Governor to the JLC Corporation in December 2017. I have enjoyed the challenge of being a governor at John Harrison CE Primary School in Barrow-upon-Humber since 2004 and Chair since 2011. My day-job is in Quality Assurance, so I’m pleased to have been given the opportunity to join the JLC governing board and Quality Assurance committee. My son recently successfully completed his A levels and is heading on to University soon. My daughter has just started at JLC and I am looking forward to helping the college to maintain and improve its performance and also expand my own experience of governance in education. I enjoy the challenge of debating the sometimes complex issues around educating students whilst ensuring good value for money for the taxpayer. My impression after two years at JLC are very positive – alongside a strong and approachable staff leadership team, there is a healthy blend of governors including former teachers and heads, business people, accountants and lawyers as well as current students and staff. All have a strong commitment to doing the best for our students.
Dave HarnessI was appointed as an External Governor to the JLC Corporation in June 2018. I have much enjoyed the experience so far. My career was with an international company, with overseas postings and a lot of international travel, so I feel I am able to bring both an international & cultural perspective and an industrial perspective to the discussions. I have a lot of experience in management, systems and processes as well as implementing change & simplification/optimisation programmes. I currently sit on the International committee, the Audit committee and am a guest member of the Health and Safety committee. I have a passion for developing people and have spent many years in coaching & development in Industry.
I have been very impressed with the staff and senior team in JLC. Education is a challenging environment to work in, and they are extremely committed to enabling the students to perform at their best.
Gareth HarleI’ve worked in education for over 10 years in as an IT Manager. I’m a governor and chair of resources at the primary school in my village so when a vacancy came up here as staff governor I felt it fit well with my experience. Governors here take the role very seriously. They provide a watchful eye and act as a ‘critical friend’ to management. They are able to supportively question the decisions made about the future of the college and are deeply committed to ensuring this college achieves its ambitious goals.

Leon Riley, Principal: “I am immensely proud of the 2019 leavers. They have been a fantastic cohort. These grades continue to build on the success they achieved in their schools and will support them on their journey to successful careers. How have you found your JLC experience?John Leggott is not just a college – it’s a family. We all look after each other and support each other. The teachers and staff are the best I’ve worked with.
Everyone gives you the time of day, whether it’s a little thing or a big thing. The highlight for me was getting my independence which I loved. That’s priceless. When I came to JLC I was a child; now, I’m a man.

Sixth Form Colleges are not school sixth forms; they provide a more mature environment for young people to grow and develop towards adulthood. The sixth form environment really helps to brige the gap between school and university or work, developing self-confidence and the student’s ability to navigate the real world of work or higher education.
Sixth forms are unique in that they specialise in this transition from school. JLC is proud to work alongside four other regional sixth form colleges as part of the Venn Group. The other members are Franklin College, Grimsby; Scarborough Sixth Form College, Wilberforce Sixth Form College, Hull, and Wyke Sixth Form College, also in Hull. Between us we have over 150 years’ experience in working with 16 to 19 year olds and excellent local reputations for delivering high quality sixth form education and skills based training. Between us we have over 7,700 students and 660 staff. Each college within the Venn Group aspires to become the outstanding provider of sixth form education in their area.
The future economic health of the region is also actively supported by the Venn Group. We work closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership, local authorities and employer organisations to ensure that our students graduate college with the skills and qualifications that meet the future needs of employers.
TOTAL ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OF THE VENN GROUP TO THE REGION IN 2017/18 ESTIMATED AT £50 MILLION. £12 MILLION IN NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE

Kexuan Zheng - Zhejiang, ChinaPresident of the Student Leadership Team. John Leggott College is a great place to study. In September I will be going to the University of Oxford. I would not have had this chance if it wasn’t for the support I have received at JLC. As an International Student, I have really enjoyed my life at JLC. Not only have I experienced a fantastic academic atmosphere but also I have made a lot of friends here from many different countries.
Emilija Kucerova - Vilnius, LithuaniaThere are many reasons why John Leggott College was the best option for me. Firstly, it has a fantastic reputation, a high pass rate and many great opportunities for students. My intention is to take this experience back to my country and study at the University of Vilnius.
