Q&a for Universitytransfer stUdents

What is a university transfer degree program? The university Transfer degree program is a set of courses that has been de-

signed to transfer to all public and many private four-year colleges and universities in north Carolina. This set of courses includes 60 semester hours of transferrable credit from general education courses and elective courses. in the north Caro-lina Community College System, the Associate in Arts (A.A.) and the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree programs are included in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (C.A.A.) as fully transferrable degrees. The Associate in Engineering (A.E.) and the Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A.) degree programs are not covered by the C.A.A. but have individual uniform Articulation Agreements with most of north Carolina’s college and universities that offer the same major.

What is the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement? The north Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) is a statewide

agreement governing the transfer of credits between north Carolina community colleges and north Carolina public universities and has as its objective the smooth transfer of students. A number of private institutions have also agreed to abide by the principles of the CAA. The CAA provides certain assurances to the transferring student such as:•Assures admission to one of the 16 unC institutions (Transfer Assured

Admissions Policy)•Enables nC community college graduates of two-year Associate in Arts

and Associate in Science degree programs who are admitted to constituent institutions of the university of nC to transfer with junior status.

For additional information on the CAA and transfer to the unC System, visit www.nccommunitycolleges.edu/Programs/comprehensive_a_a.htm#AA

What do I need to do to earn an A.A. or an A.S. degree? You need to complete the universal General Education Transfer Component

(uGETC) of each degree and the ACA 122 (College Transfer Success) course as well as additional general education courses and electives for a total of 60 hours. The specific courses you choose will depend on your major and the school to which you wish to transfer.

How do I decide between A.A. and A.S. programs? The Associate in Arts (A.A.) is a two-year degree with an emphasis on courses

such as English, fine arts, foreign languages, history, philosophy, psychology, computer science, business, or sociology. The Associate in Science (A.S.) is a two-year degree with an emphasis on courses such as biology, chemistry, en-gineering, geology, mathematics, or physics. Both of these programs prepare students for different majors at four-year institutions. The A.S. is for allied health, science or math-related majors. Talk with an advisor to develop a plan appropriate to your career goals.

When do I chose the A.F.A. or the A.E. program? The Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A.) degrees and the Associate in Engineering

(A.E.) degree are programs for students who are already sure that they would like to major in music, visual arts, or engineering and transfer to a specific institution that offers this major. Students who are still unsure should opt for the A.A. for mu-sic/visual arts and the A.E. for engineering to maximize flexibility.

Additionally, students may complete the A.A. and A.F.A. simultaneously as well as the A.S. and A.E. if proper electives are chosen.

How are the plans-of-study for the A.A. and the A.S. different? The plans-of-study start with universal General Education Transfer Component

courses. Those core courses form the foundation of a quality higher education for all students at a two-year or a four-year level. in addition to 45 hours of general education courses, you will select electives more specific to your areas of interest. You will complete an ACA 122 College Transfer Success course and 14 semester hours of elective courses to earn your A.A. or A.S. degree. For many students, the A.A. degree gives them flexibility in choosing courses. Students enrolling in the A.S. program should be future mathematics or natural science majors.

What is the Transfer Assured Admissions Policy (TAAP)?The TAAP assures admission to one of the 16 unC institutions under the follow-

ing conditions:•Admission is not assured to a specific campus or specific program or major.•Students must have graduated from a north Carolina community college with an

Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree. •Students must meet all requirements of the CAA. •Students must have an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, as calculated

by the college from which they graduated, and a grade of “C” or better in all CAA courses.

•Students must be academically eligible for re-admission to the last institution attended.

•Students must meet judicial requirements of the institution to which they apply.•Students must meet all application requirements at the receiving institution,

including the submission of all required documentation by stated deadlines.if a student is denied admission to a unC institution, then he or she will be noti-

fied in writing by the institution. in this notification, the student will be directed to the College Foundation of north Carolina (CFnC) website (www.cfnc.org) where the student will be given information regarding space availability and contacts in the respective unC Admissions offices. it is the student’s responsibility to contact each institution’s admissions office to get specific information about admissions and available majors.

if the previous steps do not result in admission to a unC institution, then the student should contact the CFnC Resource Center at 1-866-866-CFnC.

What is an advisor and how do I get one?upon admission to the program, the Student Development office will assign a

faculty member to serve as your personal advisor or you may request a particular instructor as an advisor. Your advisor will assist you in selecting courses appropri-ate to your areas of interest and provide a sense of continuity during your time here. You are required to meet with your advisor each semester prior to registra-tion in order to complete a plan of study.

Where can I find more information about the universities in North Carolina?

north Carolina maintains an excellent website, College Foundation of north Carolina, to assist you in collecting information about the universities in the state. it also has information to assist you in finding funding for your college education. You will find a wealth of information when you go to the CFnC website: www.cfnc.org. Recruiters from these institutions also visit Alamance on a regular basis. Watch for announcements.

When can I transfer? You can transfer whenever a school accepts you. This will vary depending on

the program you wish to enter, the school of your choice, the courses you have selected, and the grades you have earned at Alamance. ideally, you should stay to complete the A.A. or the A.S. degree. Uponcompletionof the 60 credit hours of the A.A. or A.S. degrees and uponacceptanceat the university, the student covered by the CAA will transfer as a junior. (Transferring as a junior will give you priority in registration and access to junior-level and program-specific classes.) if you transfer hours without a degree, the college will analyze the transferability of courses item by item. The courses included as universal General Education Transfer Component (uGETC) are guaranteed to transfer individually as General Education credit. Private universities will generally evaluate your transcript on a course-by-course basis and do not necessarily require a completed degree prior to transferring. However, if you transfer a degree to a university, it is an easier tran-sition most of the time.

Does the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement mean that I can automatically transfer to one of the 16 campuses within the University of North Carolina system? no. You must still apply and be accepted. The admissions procedure is still

quite competitive, and certain programs are highly selective in their admissions. in addition, some schools limit the number of transfer students they will accept. Talk to your advisor about any issues you have in regard to applying. However, the Transfer Assured Admissions Policy does assure A.A./A.S. graduates who are covered by the CAA that they will be accepted to at least one of the 16 unC insti-tutions. it does not guarantee that this will be the university of their choice.

What is the Reverse Transfer Program? This program awards an associate degree to students who previously attended

and received at least 16 college-level credit hours at one of north Carolina’s 58 community colleges and then fulfilled the remaining associate degree require-ments while working towards a bachelor’s degree at a participating north Ca-rooina university. Eligible students will be asked to opt in when they transfer to a participating university.

If I work, should I try to take fewer hours?Yes, so you have time and energy to do well in your

classes. if you work or if you have time-intensive fam-ily commitments, you will have less time available for classes, studying, and homework assignments. See the chart at left for recommendations of course loads for working students.

How do I qualify for financial aid?

We recommend that all students fill out the application for financial aid as soon as they receive their letter of acceptance into a program. The financial aid office is on the first floor of the Gee Building in the Student Development suite, room G 118. To schedule an appointment, call 506-4109. For additional information, go to the website, College Foundation of north Carolina,www.cfnc.org for information about financial aid or visit the Alamance Community College website at www.alamancecc.edu.

Is there a limit to how many semester hours of credit I can transfer to the university?

Most universities do not award transfer credit in excess of 64 hours. However, there are exceptions to that rule, especially private schools. You should talk with a university admissions counselor to find out if those exceptions apply in your case.

What if I wish to attend a private school? The basic procedure is the same. in fact, many of the state’s private schools

have also signed on to the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. You must make sure you are taking courses that correspond to courses at your senior insti-tution and that follow the program of study for your declared major. Most colleges have their catalogs posted on the world-wide-web. You should go to the web site, download the information about your intended major and share that information with your advisor as you select your courses.

How many credit hours are necessary to be considered a full-time student?

Twelve semester hours is considered full-time for purposes of insurance, vet-eran’s benefits, and financial aid. Check with Financial Aid to confirm your status.

How do I get special accommodations for my disability?

Students with special needs related to handicapping conditions should contact the Student Success office to obtain information on available services. Some of the ser-vices available are counseling, instructional accommo-dations, interpreting services, referral to other agencies, career development, educational assessment/placement, tutorial assistance, test accommodations, tape recorders, special chairs, and special computer monitors. informa-tion regarding disability documentation can be accessed on ACC’s website under “Services for Students.” Docu-mentation of student needs must be provided to Monica isbell, Disability Services Coordinator, in order for accom-modations to be provided. The Disability Services Office is located in the Student Success Center, Room 233. The coordinator can be reached by phone at 336-506-4130or email: [email protected].

Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP)Who is eligible for C-STEP?

The ideal C-STEP candidate is a strong student whose household income falls at or below 300 percent of the fed-eral poverty guidelines. To be eligible, students also must have completed all necessary developmental coursework and place into college-level coursework. The screening process for candidates is comprehensive and holistic and considers, among other criteria, demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles, first-generation college sta-tus, diversity, employment history, and family responsibilities.

What are the requirements of the program? The goal of this program is the development of ways to assist community col-

lege students in making the transition to the university setting. Therefore, students who are admitted to C-STEP are required to participate in the program activities and events both at ACC, and after transferring, at unC.

These events include cultural events, social activities, academic development workshops, professional development workshops, advising sessions, tours of the unC campus, and campus service activities. The purposes of these activities are to help the student develop leadership skills, social skills, and academic skills. These skills will provide the student with a greater potential for success at unC and in his/her professional life.

Students admitted to the program will sign an agreement committing them-selves to full participation in these activities. Admission to unC is contingent on completion of the associate degree at ACC with a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA, completion of three semesters of a foreign language, and completion of program activities. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the student not being admitted to unC.

While at ACC, C-STEP students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity. Any cheating, plagiarism, or misconduct by a student in the program may result in dismissal from the program and loss of the guarantee of admission to unC.

What is the application process? To determine your eligibility, each potential candidate should complete and

submit the C-STEP interest form available at www.admissions.unc.edu/CSTEP/. A screening committee will review and confirm students enrolling in the program by early fall. Before enrollment, C-STEP students will sign a letter of understand-ing and intent and meet with C-STEP advisors Perry Hardison (Room 204) or Julie Trotter (Room B211).

ACA 122 College Transfer Success 1

“After spending time as a homeschooled student, I found ACC’s University Transfer program extremely beneficial in my academic endeavors. Career and College Promise classes allowed me to get two years of college behind me by age 18, even as I was finishing up my high school credits. I met an array of people through interactions with different age groups of students. CCP classes also provided me an opportunity to explore different career options before going to a four-year school. Where else could I have completed an associate’s degree in culinary arts, as well as taken courses in psychology? The people at ACC made it easy to get answers to any transfer questions I had. Now with two years of college behind me, I may work as a chef or earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology with an eye toward becoming a psychiatrist. Whatever I decide, I know that ACC was key in helping me see that my future is wide open.”

inforMation aboUt transferrinG

Transferring to N.C. State University (NCSU)•nCSu is a school oriented towards math and science. nCSu requires two pure mathematics courses as a part

of its General Education Core courses. The mathematics courses you select to fulfill the General Education Core requirements must be from MAT 171, 172, 271, or 272. (MAT143 is not recommended for those planning to attend nCSu in any science, engineering, or computer field.)

•nCSu states that it admits students after they have completed 30 hours of transferable courses. These 30 hours must include EnG 111 and EnG 112.

•nCSu has limited transfer openings for the spring semester. Most nCSu admissions are for the fall. The nCSu catalog is electronic and available online only. Engineering students will be admitted in fall only.

•nCSu applicants MuST apply for admittance to a specific program. Requirements for admittance to each program are on the college’s website.

Transferring to UNC Chapel HillTransfer admission to university of north Carolina at Chapel Hill (unC-CH) can be highly competitive. Stu-

dents interested in transferring to unC-CH should involve themselves in campus and/or community activities. unC-CH considers everything a student submits for admissions including community involvement, sustained commitment, work history, and life involvement. These activities will give potential transfer students an advan-tage in the admissions process. unC-CH will place emphasis on the application essays and letters of recom-mendation from faculty members and/or from other professionals as well.•unC requires the third semester of foreign language for graduation. We recommend that students complete

their foreign language requirements here at ACC. Some programs require four semesters. Go to the website listed below to identify which ones.

•Students interested in applying to transfer into one of the professional programs at unC-CH should refer to the website below as these programs have specific requirements and deadlines.

•Associate in Science students should complete Chemistry i and ii (CHM 151, CHM 152) or Physics i and ii (PHY 151, PHY 152 for their required A.S. science sequence (depending on planned major). Biology i (BiO 111) should be taken for other required A.S. hours.

•unC-CH requires only 1 credit hour PED.

•unC admits students in the fall only.
