SAY I AM YOU

I am dust particles in sunlight.I am the round sun.

To the bits of dust I say, Stay.To the sun, Keep moving.

I am morning mist, and the breathing of evening.

I am wind in the top of a grove, and surf on the cliff.

Mast, rudder, helmsman, and keel,I am also the coral reef they founder on.

I am tree with a trained parrot in its branches. Silence, thought, and voice.

The musical air coming through a lute,a spark off a stone, lickering in metal.

Both candle and the moth crazy around it.Rose and nightingale lost in the fragrance.

I am all orders of being, the circling galaxy, the evolutionary intelligence, the lift and falling away.

What is and what is not. You know ............................,

You the one in all, say who I am.Say I am you. Rumi

Managing Hazardous Waste at your FacilitySharif Rahman, P.E.

Improper management of hazardous waste poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. Mismanagement of hazardous waste has resulted ires, explosions, or the generation of toxic gases that have killed or seriously injured workers, people, and ireighters. Even when hazardous waste is managed or disposed of in a careful manner, it may still pose a threat to human health and the environment. For example, toxic hazardous wastes can leach from a hazardous waste landill that is poorly constructed, improperly maintained, or structurally compromised. Such waste contamination can severely, and sometimes irreversibly pollute ground water, and the primary source of drinking water in many places. In other cases, careless waste disposal has been linked to respiratory illnesses, skin diseases (including skin cancer), and elevated levels of toxic materials in the blood, and tissue of human body and domestic livestock.

What is a hazardous waste? A hazardous waste is a waste with properties that make it dangerous or capable of having a harmful effect on human health or the environment. Hazardous wastes can be liquid, solid, compressed gas, or sludge. They can be the by-products of manufacturing process, off-spec commercial product, or other discarded article or waste.

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) is the public law that creates the framework for the proper management of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste. The law describes the waste management program mandated by Congress that gave Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) authority to develop the RCRA program. If your facility potentially generating hazardous waste, it is wise to know the RCRA regulations in order to manage the hazardous waste properly, and to avoid penalty that may be imposed for violating the law.

Business Generated Hazardous Waste:Auto-body shop, Chemical Manufacturer, Printing shop, Dry cleaner, Painter & Construction Contractor, Retail Centers, Laboratory, School, Hospital, Pharmacy (acute hazardous waste), Furniture Repair, Cabinet Maker, Electroplating & other Metal Finishing Shop, Treatment Plant, etc.

EPA has deined hazardous waste by using two different mechanism:

a. Listed Hazardous Waste:

F LIST - wastes from non-speciic sources such as solvent, still bottom, and plating Waste. K LIST – speciic waste from the chemical manufacturing industry P, U LISTS – discarded and/or, off-spec chemical product, container residue and spill residue P – acute hazardous waste U – toxic hazardous waste

b. Characteristics of Hazardous Waste:

i) Ignitability = D001 The lashpoint is < 140º F (60º C). Common wastes include: Paint Thinner, Gasoline, Alcohol, Solvent, Flammable compressed gas

ii) Corrosivity = D002 It is an aqueous solution with a pH of ≤ 2 or ≥12.5. Hydrochloric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide. It corrodes steel at 6.35 mm/year at 55º C. Common example include: Waste from rust remover, Alkaline cleaning luid, Battery acid.

iii) Reactivity = D003 Normally unstable, explosive, reacts violently with water or form toxic gass. Cyanide or Sulide bearing waste when exposed to pH conditions between 2 and 12.5 can generate toxic gas. Capable of explosion or detonation. Example include: waste from Cyanide plating, bleach.

iv) Toxicity = D004 –D043 Regulatory levels are based on ability to leach to groundwater. Laboratory Analysis assess concentration in sample (TCLP Test).

Measures the potential to seep or "leach" into groundwater if a waste is landill disposed. 40 parameters, speciic regulatory limit for each. Must be done by a certiied lab. Example, for lead(D008)-regulatory limit 5.0 mg/L.

Few Requirements for a Hazardous Waste Generator:

i) Making a hazardous waste determination, keeping all supporting documentation.

ii) Proper Container, Satellite Accumulation, Labeling Properly, Central Accumulation Area, Weekly Inspections

iii) Central Accumulation Area Containers handled so they will not rupture or leak Access control Secondary Containment for liquid storage Waste segregated if incompatible Maintain aisle space

iv) Preparedness and Prevention Emergency Coordinator Spill Response Kit Preparedness and Prevention Plan Training on hazardous waste management

v) Required Equipment All facilities are required to have: • Internal communication or alarm system (voice or signal) (i.e. a telephone or two-way radio) • Portable ire extinguisher • Spill control equipment • Decontamination equipment (if required) and • Water in adequate volume and pressure

vi) Manifests Must be used by all SQG and LQGs that ship hazardous waste off-site for treatment, storage, disposal, or recycling. Provide tracking from your facility to TSDF. • Generator initiates the manifest • TSDF sends signed copy back to generator • Keep on ile for 3 years

Universal Waste:

Streamline collection and management standard for certain hazardous waste stream: • Used luorescent, Neon, Mercury Vapor, Sodium, and HID lamps • Batteries • Recalled/Suspended Pesticides • Mercury-Containing Equipment

Basic Responsibilities as a Hazardous Waste Generator: • Follow procedures for labeling, storing and disposing of hazardous waste • Minimize the amount of waste generated • Maintain proper records and paperwork, including LDR notice • Prepare ahead of time for spills or other mishaps • To export a hazardous waste, the exporter must notify the EPA Administrator 60 days prior to when the waste is scheduled to leave the United States.

Proper Universal Waste Storage

Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR):Congress created the LDR program on November 8, 1984 as part of the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments (HSWA) to the Resource Conservation and Recov-ery Act (RCRA). This law prohibits the land disposal of untreated hazardous wastes.

The LDR program identiies treatment standards for hazardous wastes and speciies requirements that generators, transporters, and owners or operators of treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) that manage restricted wastes destined for land disposal must meet.

STRESS WAVE PROPAGATION IN KOLSKY BAR Bazle Z. (Gama) Haque

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Senior Scientist of Center for Composite Materials University of Delaware, Newark DE 19716, USA

Tel: +1 (302) 690 4741 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Kolsky bar (aka Split Hopkinson Bar) is used to test engineering materials under high strain rate dynamic loading conditions. This paper outlines the fundamental working principle and mathematical framework for understanding the theory and practice of Kolsky bar experiment. Fundamentals of Kolsky Bar (Split Hopkinson Bar) The Kolsky bar (or Split Hopkinson Bar) is used to test materials under dynamic uniaxial stress loading, which consists of a long cylindrical incident bar (IB, Fig. 1a) with high length to diameter ratio, a shorter striker bar (SB) of same diameter, and a transmitter bar (TB, not shown in Fig. 1a) of similar length of the incident bar. The striker bar, SB, is launched from a pneumatic launcher which impacts the end of the incident bar on yz plane at the origin at

. Stress wave propagation in the incident bar can be considered as 1D longitudinal stress wave provided the fact that the length of the bar is very long as compared to its diameter.

opposite direction in the SB (a left traveling wave, LTW) at any time (Fig. 1b). The particle velocities in the wave segments are denoted by and respectively. The compressive wave-fronts propagate in both the bars with a wave-front velocity and , respectively. It is important to mention that during the impact-contact period, the SB-IB interface moves together, and the SB-IB interface velocity can be assumed to be . Since the particle velocity of the wave-front in the IB is given by , the location of the SB-IB interface, , can be expressed as:

(1)

Since the initial impact velocity of the SB is , and the wave-segment in SB is moving in the opposite direction of SB motion with a particle velocity of , the absolute or relative velocity of the wave-segment ‘ ’ can be written as (Fig. 2):

(2)

Figure 2: Absolute Velocity of the LTW Segment in the Striker Bar at Time . Since , Eq. (2) represents a positive value which means that the particles in the wave-segment is moving towards the positive direction. Thus the SB-IB interface location can also be expressed as:

(3)

Continuity of displacements at the SB-IB interface can be expressed as: (4)

Thus,

Let us define the characteristic time ( ) of the striker bar as follows:

At time , the wave-front at point ‘o’ in the SB reaches at the left edge of the striker bar at point ‘m’ (Figs. 2 & 3a), and the rigid body velocity of the entire SB in the direction of impact becomes:

particle velocity of as per Eq. (1). At , the wave-front in the IB travels a distance .

(9)

At time , the stress wave reflects back from the free left end (point ‘m’) of the striker bar as a tensile wave and the wave-front moves toward the right with the wave-front velocity

. The absolute velocity of the right traveling wave (RTW) in the left side of the SB (Fig. 4) between points ‘m’ and ‘o’ can be expressed as (Fig. 4a):

Figure 5: Wave-Front Locations at .

Momentum Balance Momentum ( ) of the striker bar (SB) at time, can be written as:

(13)

Momentum of the SB at time is: (14)

Momentum of the wave-segment in the IB at . (15)

Conservation of momentum can be written as: (16a)

(17)

If the bars are made of the same material and have the same cross-sectional area, then:

Eq. (17) can then be written as: (18)

From Eq. (6) we have (19a)

(19b)

Thus for equal diameter bars of the same material, the rigid body velocity of the SB at time from Eqs. (11), (18) and (19) can be written as:

(20)

Which tells us that at time , the SB will stop moving in the -direction. In fact, the right traveling tensile wave in the SB will reflect back from the right end of the SB (point ‘n’) as a left traveling compressive wave, rigid body velocity of which (wave-segment ) is equal to in the direction (to the left) opposite to the impact direction (to the right, Fig. 6a). Since the particle velocity of the RTW segment in the IB at time was equal

, contact of the SB at the SB-IB interface will cease and the left end of the SB at point ‘n’ will start moving to the left (Fig. 6b).

(a) Absolute Velocity of the RTW Segment in the Striker Bar at Time .

Figure 6: Wave Propagation in the SB and IB at Time . At time , the RTW segment in the IB still has the particle velocity of . In absence of impact-contact at the SB-IB interface, the generation of the wave-segment will cease at the SB-IB interface, while the RTW segment of finite length ( ) between points ‘i’ and ‘j’ will continue to propagate in the IB with the wave-front velocity of (Fig. 6b). Strain and Stress in the Wave-Segment in the Incident Bar A rectangular RTW segment of length , and of duration (Fig. 7) has been generated in the IB upon the impact of a SB with length, impact velocity, and characteristic time of ; respectively. The particle velocity of this RTW segment in the IB is given by Eq. (19b) which is .

Strain and stress of this wave-segment can now be calculated as follows.

Leaders of TomorrowRazzaque ChokderInnovative Construction & Mgmt.

In the past when young professionals were climbing corporate ladders an MBA was seen as the key to fast tracking their careers. Companies invested heavily to those degree holders entrusting them with greater responsibility such as creating smarter management technology coming up with new policies and improving company’s overall performance and eficiency.

Most recently technology has disrupted the status quo, forcing business schools to rethink how their advanced degree program can best prepare the next generation of movers and shakers. Now they are focusing on developing leader’s skill to accommodate new business demands and differentiates themselves in an increasingly competitive higher education market place. Now the focus on PPP- Proit, People and Planet. They are producing savvy business leaders who can lead companies to successful inancial outcomes but not at the expense of everything else. Nurturing moral, ethics and social responsibility among the students is as important as teaching them inance, management and accounting. Now schools are providing training to their graduates to make data driven decisions. They are not applying known best practices rather they are creating the best practices of future.

Now how can an employer identify candidates who really do have a great future- irst step is by abandoning the Resume as currently conceived. Resumes are screening out exceptional people because most resume do not tell employers what they need to know information about creativity, willingness to work hard and love learning. That is most important when we are trying to evaluate potential. The most important is curiosity- openness to learn to new ideas. Also crucial are capability to adapt to deal with constant disruption and chaos. Overlaying all those abilities, willingness to learn about yourself. These factors combine to signal potential, which has become the crucial variable in top level people decision making. A company may have two candidates in the same ballpark but deining element is potential. But Resume probably would not disappear anytime soon so yours will somehow need to convey those traits and abilities.

One more theme comes through strongly in canvassing a wide range of job market authorities a trend more profound than others. The whole human side is now more important than skills or IQ. Everything we hear from clients is about human aspects of leadership, vulnerability and humility. Across industries, employers prizing people skills, the so called soft skills more highly than before. Even strictly deined technology job employers are increasingly looking for soft skill and leadership abilities.

Page 26: ianbuetian.us/2018-BUETian-Dinner/2018-March-BUETian... · 2018-03-18 · Rumi The Big Red Book, The Great Masterpiece Celebrating Mystical Love & Friendship Coleman Barks 01 . Sharif

24www.BUETian.us

The objectives of those human skills in companies today are clear. One is making people feel they are part of an organization that matters because today’s best candidates want to make a difference. They are very purpose driven. Another objective is building an emotional connection with followers.

Today people work for you because they want to not because they have to. May be the deepest part of that emotional connection is showing employees that leader genuinely cares about them. It may sound hopelessly warm and fuzzy but those in the think of hiring and evaluating leaders agree that it is important, and it is what employers are demanding. Employers want to know that someone is looking out for them. Many companies are thus coming late to realize that dawned on google almost a decade ago hiring on wrong criteria- SAT score and School Majors were not predictive of job performance. What predicted a leader’s success far better than tech. skills or test scores found was simply making a human connection with followers, being interested in their lives and careers and being accessible to them. Thus employees will be happier, more productive and less likely to leave. Employ-ers increasingly want deep human skills at all level which leads to a question for the ired up job seeker who wants to capitalize on this extraordinary favorable environment. Now if any candidate is luent in those skills how would he convey that fact to an investor. It is not as if you can put certiication on your Resume. You can anticipate 90% of the questions you are going to be get asked so the correct strategy is to practice answering those questions over and over. When you get those question, you can just talk without having to think too hard. Then if you have these social and emotional skills you need to apply that meeting like you never applied them in your life. In 30 minutes you have to get to make that person fall in love with you. That is the best way to convince an employer.

BUET Alumni NY, Feb 2018Nasim Jahan (Poly), Architect, R.A.

I am a Licensed Architect in New York, graduated from BUET1 in 1980, an Ex-Assistant Professor Dept. of Architecture, BUET, living in here since end of 2003.

The other day, I was having a social tele-conversation with a young female Architect from BUET, I heard from a voice from the back was saying “Ask Apa to do an introductory write up for this BUETian2 occasion”. I was totally confused and thought to do a write up for HAH3 (a web-based journal called “Home Abroad Home”). I thought I will check it out with our HAH leader and would put together something for HAH. Also, I came across a message in our HAH group messenger “Need a write up for BUETian souvenirs by January. Please provide. Thanks, by Zia”. Still confused and had no idea what to do. It was an invitation to submit an introductory essay for this irst inaugural dinner on BUET Alumni living in New York.

When I felt I understood the theme and the subject matter, I sat tight to jot down some thoughts. I am feeling blank. As if there is nothing inside my head. All my brilliant thoughts buzz my head when I am not doing anything or not able to do any substantial work. You name it, while riding in the subway or walking in the City or may be in a sleepless night. It is amazing, how our brain work. Never come to work in the right time or place.

I left BUET in 1988, was living and working in Toronto, Canada. I use to visit New York few times a year. At the beginning of my life in abroad, I guess I was more self-centered. All we could think is us our settlement or establishment, daily professional activity and some friends. Some of those friends are from BUET and that was it, never did much thought on that. When I moved to New York, I was wondering about my BUET Alumni and their where about. As New York is much larger city than Toronto, possibly it struck me to know who else are here from BUET and where are they?

Last Ramadan (in 2017) I was present at the irst Iftar party gathering of BUET professionals. It was amazing to see or meet such a good number of BUET Alumni living nearby. We have this one connection that we all come from one country, more over coming from BUET makes it as if we all grew up in one home. I describe BUET as Harvard in Bangladesh to express the quality or the status of the institute in Bangladesh. BUET is a hi- name to all other Bangladeshi living in NY or abroad.

I am tempted to share one incidence with my Alumni here. Once I was at a Thanks Giving Party in one of my friend’s home few years back. The host was serving me carefully at the dinner table. Someone jokingly raised a question, why they are specially serving me instead others?

Page 28: ianbuetian.us/2018-BUETian-Dinner/2018-March-BUETian... · 2018-03-18 · Rumi The Big Red Book, The Great Masterpiece Celebrating Mystical Love & Friendship Coleman Barks 01 . Sharif

www.BUETian.us 26

The answer by the host was, because “she is an ex teacher in BUET where I did not get selected as a student”. That was quite amusing and a great feeling. That means we are the precious bunch from Bangladesh. We are from BUET.

A couple of weeks back I got a group email, for a get together among Female Professional Architects and Engineers, a wonderful endeavor. This was a gathering of all female professionals in Architecture and Engineering irrespective of schools of origin. Unfortunately, I could not participate. The FB4 coverage on this event took me back in time to few decades and brought interesting memories at the University time at BUET. It’s the time of our life, when a kid is in a transition and turning into a leading person in the society. It was great to see the pictures of some of the senior students and the new generations of brilliant female professionals. Also, I am tempted to say, a bunch of brilliant mind and beauty together, almost all of them dressed in saree, was looking stunning, made me proud.

Finally, I am thinking, if we put together this intelligent head what would come out. We are diasporic BUET graduates, living in a New York. I am sure we connect each other via this diasporic situation too. I think at least we all are making New York a temporary or inal home. Sometimes I think we could contribute a lot to our community here. I ind New York has a lot common features like Bangladesh. The other day I was telling a friend that I feel like I am leaving in Shadarghat, Kamalapur, Bongshal area, among a lot of amazing neighborhoods. Most of all there is a vast community of diasporic Bangladeshis’ are living here. Our people are living and working in all levels in this society. Interestingly these days, I come across Bengalis in every form of business in New York, from High-end restaurant to street vendor selling fruit, lower or chicken on the rice. I am proud of them. Just a few years back, all street food venders in New York City were from Middle East or Afghanistan. A shift of ownership is evident these days to our people. On my subway ride to Manhattan every morning I come across at least a Bengali sitting next to me or standing by me. I tried counting few times; the number of Bengali riders in a subway coach is almost ten on average. Once I found a person was sick on the ride, he was a Bengali and few Bengalis came together to support him. It is a sad story but remarkable. I feel very much at home in this City. We the graduates from BUET, is a small part to it.

Maybe we can share our brilliant ideas. These talented professionals have other attributes or passion present to almost all of them are, Musician, Actor, Writer, Dancer, Comedian, Poet, Reciter and many more. We can put together a wonderful cultural show just by using the talents of our BUET Alumni. Our training from BUET and some occasion further enhancement in abroad, mixed with the exposure in New York made us a unique individual. We can use this special quality for our future generations. We could get our professional advice/ support from each other. I know some of us are already actively doing so. This BUET organization inception came from the Institute where we all graduated from.

Page 29: ianbuetian.us/2018-BUETian-Dinner/2018-March-BUETian... · 2018-03-18 · Rumi The Big Red Book, The Great Masterpiece Celebrating Mystical Love & Friendship Coleman Barks 01 . Sharif

We studied in BUET with absolutely no cost to us. Yet we are the most respected professionals in our society at home and abroad. I must say that we were also competent enough to enter and study in such prestigious institution. But still I believe, it is time for returning our gratitude to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. I was thinking to offer a scholarship program to the needy student on a merit basis. This is just a thought; we can work out a way to do this. We can have all kinds of communal celebration here, such as Iftar, Eid Party, Annual Dinner or Picnic. But a contribution to our root will deepen and widen our effort in connection to BUET. Possibly you all could come up with other brilliant thoughts; I would leave it with you all.

And Then It Was Painted Through Pain: A Paradox of Sistine Chapel in OculusLaila Farzana, Architect, LEED AP BD+C, Associate AIA, NCARB, USGBCNYC School Construction Authority, New York.

Being a New Yorker living with controversy and experiencing new thing nothing new. Ever Since Westield initiated the exhibition of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel installation on the loor of World Trade Center Oculus, the idea became a debatable issue. I personally believe even the thought of bringing down the remarkable ceiling works to the loor level of world’s most expensive train station needs serious courage. In some news, the demonstration was brutally criticized as another “kind of commercialism many New Yorkers feared”. Good remarks were also in the air; some of them quoted here: “The magniicent reproductions were displayed to guests in a way that only Michelangelo was able to view them”“Presentation of world renowned pieces like The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgement brings audiences face to face with the artwork “ “A perfect experience for those who have already seen them in all their grandeur in the Eternal City yet want to take a closer look, or for those who have never made the trip but want to experience the ingenuity and beauty themselves”.

This incredible installation ran from June 23 through July 23 of this summer, 2017, described as “a way to engage with the master works of art like never before”. There were 34 life size photographic recreations of the great Italian Sculptor’s Sistine frescoes, displayed in the Oculus.Looking at these images in Oculus apart from the harsh criticisms or praising statements, no matter what the inner idea behind it, I could somehow connect Sistine chapel and Oculus in a strange manner. The immersive environment created through remarkable frescos under the serene warm light through the ceiling of oculus appeared rather surrealistic to me. The graceful Oculus like a white blank canvas with a piercing light of hope on his crown waiting to get colorful through the robust brush strokes of the greatest sculptor of all times. A rebel widow covered by white drapery was announcing the screaming pain of Michelangelo what he went through during the creation of enormous artwork of Sistine chapel.

History of The Sistine Chapel Ceiling in Rome is rather historic than any other history of Art. It took 15 years to complete this gigantic work of art. It depicts the pain, frustration, trauma and the helplessness of an artist yet it is the masterpiece of one of its kinds. In 1508, Pope Julius II asked the 33-year-old Michelangelo the renounced sculptor of the time to decorate the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling. Although Michelangelo was not so happy about this, as he would rather assert himself a sculptor rather than a painter, completed his sketches. He himself built a scaffold with platform 60 feet above the chapel loor and in December 1508, he began to paint the irst of nine episodes from the Book of Genesis. He had to paint in an extremely painful and uncomfortable posture, facing up and bending backwards. In the center, he positioned one of his most famous creations: ‘God-Creating Adam, God extending the inger that will give Adam life. Under God’s left arm, Eve emerges and the rest of humanity follows.’

That brutal painful time of his intense creative phase was full of his psychological agony. Captivated by the fears of death and mental anxiety, he wrote more than 300 poems describing those distressful experiences.Stubborn, impulsive and ill-tempered Michelangelo was always insecure. Out of the frustration of the quality of work, he ired all his helpers and decided to do almost all the work himself. It was also his relationship with the Pope, which elevated even more tensions. Pope Julius was impatient about the timely completion of the work and constantly pressuring Michelangelo for prompt completeness. Once in a dark day agitated by the artist’s equally impatient reply, he struck Michelangelo with his cane. It is a sad and shameful incident of the

history and anybody who is knowledgeable about art knows ‘It took 500 crowns and a written apology to persuade Michelangelo to return to work.’Soon after his return Michelangelo worked through ‘four hot summers and cold winters’ eating only stale breads he kept on the scaffold with him. Days after days of his awkward positions to paint the works, he grew terrible body ache; furthermore, with paint dripping on his face, he almost went blind. Finally, the suffering of Michelangelo ended, the scaffold was down in November 1512. The outcome of his extensive labor and enormous creation then brought in to light. The painted masterpiece, of the sculptor Michelangelo stunned the whole world with astonishing marble of wonder.Michelangelo’s struggle behind the creation of this unique masterpiece purely makes sense to why the Sistine chapel would be displayed in Oculus. Surrealistic of course! If Sistine Chapel Ceiling in Rome is the forceful application of power on an artist of that time, High Renaissance, then Oculus is a statement to that of Artist’s liberty, in New York. If the action-packed ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was for the creations of God, or the religious base of genesis , then the naked and empty ceiling of Oculus stands for humanity and the bare truth of freedom that breaks the boundary of Orthodoxy.

Some theorist believe the most famous panel of Sistine Chapel ceiling “The Creation of Adam,” contains the distinctive outline of a human brain, formed by the angels and robes surrounding God. “Frank Lynn Meshberger, a doctor who pioneered this hypothesis, Michelangelo meant to evoke God’s bestowal of intelligence on the irst human.” Oculus on the other hand resembles the skeleton of a lying bird. The white ribbed inner dome emerges as a skull of an ancient intelligent creature of some unknown world. The central spine of mysterious lights creates the dilemma of dividing the creator and the creations.

Images of God and His creations conquered the entire ceiling of Sistine chapel, don’t know how much of it actually Michelangelo wanted or was it against his vision! Santiago Calatrava on the other hand, states in his own language “My intention was for the commuters to always have a view of the sky. Visitors can see the morning light, as it rises along Fulton Street, on their daily commute. This, “wedge of light,” as named by Daniel Libeskind, should be very special to witness. The idea of placing this gap there, to see the sky and to bring in bright light is, for me, very symbolic.”

To me Santiago Calatrava through his bold bare basic structure of oculus stated the untold words of Michelangelo that he would like to deliver to his audience. He fulilled the uninished job of an Artist right. The colorlessness of the oculus depicts the denial of a sculptor for paint and his restless journey. An artist journey never ends and the message successfully transported from the Renaissance period to a 20th century curious visitor through the symbolic mystic consoling light falling from above to the surfaces of frescos of Sistine Chapel!

Unlike the comedy movie, “EuroTrip” I wasn't going there to meet “the one”. I have never been to Europe. A few years back, I decided to experience the old continent and meet old college friends after many years. As a landscape photographer, I was salivating at the prospect Europe offered. Call it Ek Dhile Tin Pakhi. To be precise, I killed a 4th one too, that's later.

It all started with the Cathay Paciic All Asia Pass ad I saw online. Buy one ticket, ly to Hong Kong and visit up to four other Asian destinations for a ixed price. That got me thinking about a whirlwind trip across Asia. Quickly I found out how dificult it would be to take advantage of it due to the restrictions. Instead of the All Asia Pass, I selected a few places I wanted to visit and strung together an itinerary on my own. I went to Bali, Singapore, Malaysia, Tokyo, and Dhaka in 12 days. Couple of things made it possible. I became a US citizen. This truly was like the passport to the world. The places I went to either did not require visa or I got visa on arrival. It helps that I don’t get jet lag (joined ofice the very next day after coming back, for example). With the Asia trip under my belt, I was ready to repeat the feat the next year. This time Europe was in the cross hair. Started with the places I wanted to visit: Paris, London, Amsterdam and Finland. And could not pass on the opportunity to be in Dhaka. The challenge was to connect them in an optimal way - it was like solving the traveling salesman problem. The constraints being time and money. Besides, one has to ensure not to spend too much time traveling while ensuring there is enough cushion in case there are light delays or cancellations. I chose London as the hub for the trip. Then gradually tried different combination of cities, and modes of transportation. The planning was vital. I know that kills the spontaneity. Nor is it the ideal way to get to know people, enjoy a new culture. Given the number of vacation days and resources, I didn't have much wiggle room. Once the itinerary was inalized, hotels were easy. All that I needed was a safe, secure, clean room with bathroom (yes that is important, a criterion we take for granted in the States). Used ‘Trip Advisor’ to igure out the best options.

My Itinerary looked like this (2 weeks in Dhaka, 2 weeks in Europe) Virgin Atlantic: Newark, NJ -> Heathrow, London Gulf Air: Heathrow, London -> DhakaGulf Air: Dhaka -> Heathrow, LondonStena Ferry: Harwich Port, London -> Amsterdam Thalys Train: Amsterdam -> ParisEasy Jet: CDG, Paris -> Luton, LondonRyan Air: Stansted, London -> Tampere, FinlandRyan Air: Tampere, Finland -> Stansted, LondonVirgin Atlantic: Heathrow, London -> Newark, NJ

Obviously I had to travel light. One backpack with my cameras, lenses and photographic gears. And a carry-on, small enough to be allowed on any carrier.

I fall in the category of ‘quiet introvert’. But that changes when I'm traveling. Striking up a conversation with a stranger comes naturally, I easily get along with fellow passengers. I make even shy persons feel comfortable. Not only does it make for interesting stories, you get valuable information about the place you are going to, the kind you will never ind in a guidebook. With right company the time lies, you gain friendship and lasting memory to talk about.

First up, London - reached there in the morning. Took the Heathrow Express to terminal 5 (to my surprise, there were helpful attendants!) to buy a SIM card. Bought a Vodafone prepaid SIM card. Inserted the SIM and my unlocked GSM phone asked for a pin! Disappointed, I used the payphone near the left luggage store to call a friend’s cousin, my guide in London. Maybe the SIM was an early sign of things to come. There was massive disruption of tube service. Trains were not running between a no of stations. Bought a day pass. That's usable on both trains and buses. I arrived at the Westminster station 2 hours later. Growing up read, heard so much about the tube service. The tube trains were shaped more like a cylinder and were smaller in size than their NYC counterparts. They were really crowded. And they didn’t have a/c. The stations had displays showing when to expect the next train (something the New Yorkers started to see only recently. BTW, it was an American who made the tube service so much better). The seats were cushioned. The Londoners didn’t look as stressed as we do across the pond. And people dressed more formally.

The Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye were all near the Westminster station. I spent a lot of time photographing the Tower Bridge. The bridge above the Thames looked amazing at night. It was getting really cold in the evening. Fortunately, my guide was very patient. Once again I had to struggle to get back to Heathrow for my light to Dhaka.

During my Asia trip, Dhaka was allocated just four days. So this time I was obligated to spend more time with my parents and brothers. Interestingly, I met a Dutch woman at ZIA who was visiting her sister in Dhaka and were planning to visit Cox’s Bazar and the Sundarbans. Told her about my upcoming trip to her country, and we shared tips about our respective countries. The highlight of the Dhaka trip was meeting “the one”, Tuli. A common friend gave her contact a while back. It wasn't until the day before I left Dhaka that I met her. We connected instantly. Our irst phone conversation lasted ive hours. From then on it was a slippery slope! (here we are, years later, still writing our “happily ever after”).

I left Dhaka for London a happy person. This time the SIM worked. I kept in touch with Tuli. She was pleasantly surprised. After wandering around in London for some time it was time to take the Stena Ferry to Holland. I went to Liverpool St Station. A train connects Liverpool St. Station to Harwich International Station. About an hour’s ride. But due to train service disruption we were taken to Harwich by bus. An older British gentleman sat next to me. As we were passing through London, he showed me important landmarks and historic places. He had survived WWII, he described how London, more speciically certain neighborhoods we passed through looked during those trying times. He has been to NY/NJ many times for his work in the aviation industry.

The ferry was pretty nice - they called it a super ferry. It had bars, restaurants, casino, shops, cinema etc. Free Wi-Fi. Had dinner at the restaurant on the 9th loor, met the British gentleman again. He recommended a ish entree to me. After seeing it I decided against it. Dinner was OK. After checking the emails at a terminal I went back to my cabin, it was tiny but had bunk beds, TV, shower. Not much to watch on TV. The adult ads did make those in the states seem prudish. After sailing for nine and half hours overnight, we reached the Hook of Holland (Rotterdam) early morning. My ticket included high-speed train transfer to Amsterdam. Puspak, my junior friend from BUET/AIT made that irrelevant by picking me up at the pier. I met him after more than a decade. He had hardly changed. He said the same to me.

After dropping my stuff at his house and meeting his family, we went to Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum with cheese factory, clog makers, and windmills. Warned Puspak about the photo shoot part in advance. He too was very understanding as I spent hours photographing the landscape.

Next, Amsterdam. It was different than London. Looked more ancient and as if out of a fairy tale with its narrow cobbled streets, crisscrossing canals, boats, picturesque houses (just like the ones in the stamps we collected in childhood), tall people. In comparison, Rotterdam looked out of place, it's a totally new city. In WWII it was totally destroyed. It has been reconstructed ground up.

Amsterdam was surprisingly tiny. In an hour one could walk from one end to the other, I was somewhat disappointed. Bikes were everywhere. So were the canals and the boats. There’s a multi-storied bike-parking garage near the central station. I could see why it is possible for Amsterdam to think about getting rid of cars. Loved the houseboats with addresses. From my research, I knew I could get a wonderful view of the city from the metropolis museum (NEMO). The Amsterdam VOC ship was moored next to the museum. It’s an exact copy of the Dutch East India Company Ship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1749. Tulips were over by April but I was happy to locate Bloemenmarkt, the loating market. Unlike Bangkok, the market was not on boats. The market still had a lot of bulbs on sale. Visited the famous drawbridge. I expected it to be larger and grander. Picked up a few Dutch words courtesy of Puspak. Kerk means church, Gracht canal, Welkom is welcome.

The next day Puspak dropped me at the Den Haag Mariahoeve train station. It was minutes away from his home. Took Train 106 to Amsterdam Central. As I was boarding the train I saw Metro, the free magazine I am used to seeing in NJ/NY train stations. Didn’t know it was available elsewhere. And there was an article on Bangladesh. It was in Dutch, but could say it was not anything positive. Changed for Amsterdam right across the platform at Leiden Central. Met a guy who was going to the Philippines to his wife. He was knowledgeable about Bangladesh. Once in central Amsterdam station, located the Thalys platform. Then walked off to central Amsterdam one more time, I had a few hours to kill. It seemed weird to pay to use the toilets in the station (same as in the Liverpool station).

If we removed cars, buses, trains (trams were the best way to get around) Amsterdam probably would look no different than how it looked hundreds of years ago. It was another sunny day. Lunch options were not good. Being used to plethora of options in NYC, I was very disappointed, Opted for pita sandwich with Doner Kebab. The dessert options were much better. Had some pastries in an East European bakery. Thalys ride was smooth. To my disappointment the Wi-Fi didn’t work on Thalys. The Netherlands was lat like Bangladesh and saw lush green ields. As the train crossed borders, I got SMS from Vodafone telling me the calling rates in each country e.g. 38p/minute.

I asked the conductor if he could place me in an empty row. He came back after a while and changed my seat. I had all three seats to myself. That didn't do me any good, quite the opposite.

I woke up with knee pain. I slept with one leg stretched to the next seat. Thalys was late in arriving at Paris, instead of three hours it took about ive. Just like in the Amsterdam station, there were a lot of soldiers in Paris Gare du Nord station. I saw a number of bags being searched, felt sorry for those passengers. I remembered Tuli cautioning me about security alert in Europe. Went one level down to the info booth. Actually I found a shopkeeper (an immigrant) more helpful than the expressionless info booth lady. Bought one way metro ticket for 1.7 euro. Took Line 4 to Sebastopol then line 3 to Gallieni/Parc de Bagnolet exit. As I was looking at the local map in the station to locate my hotel, someone asked me something in Hindi. Saw a friendly desi face. Told him I didn't speak Hindi. He too tried to help me with the map. As he was scanning the map, a Bengali word escaped from him. Well, he was from Narsingdi. Told me there were other Bangladeshis who lived nearby and that I didn't have to stay in hotel, could share a room with them. He spoke to the local attendant in French about my hotel location. Turned out, the next station was the closest one to the hotel. Deshi bhai also let me into the metro using his card. As I walked out of the metro station, I saw a big neon sign of Mister Bed City (I know, the name sounds Engrish). Anyway, checked into the hotel. For 55 euro (including breakfast) I didn't expect as much. The room was tiny but neat and clean. Asked the front desk about dinner options. Stopped at the Belest mall next door. Most shops were closed by then, so was the dining area. I had two options, McDonald’s or a sandwich shop. Obviously I didn't go to Paris to eat at a McDonald’s.

After dinner, headed straight to Eiffel tower via Metro. The attendant at the station surprisingly spoke good English. Paris metro was different than NYC subway. No a/c or heating. Old, dirty but spacious. Stations were stinky. Uneven loors, rare escalators at the stations. Had to take lights of stairs. Saw performers on the train, and in the stations some were playing music for money. The air quality was better than in NY. Most annoying thing was opening train doors manually from inside using a latch. The doors closed automatically though.

Paris, the city of light: grew up reading about Paris in literature, listening to Jean Michel Jarre, watching French movies. I also worked for Alcatel in Dhaka. You get the impression this city is where romanticism seeps through music, food, architecture, air. As for the people, I had this idea of them being snob, not helpful etc. But they were surprisingly nice and helpful.

I spent many hours photographing Eiffel tower from various locations, which I found out from other photographers online. Part of the tower was covered due to maintenance. There were a lot of souvenir peddlers. The moment they thought cops were coming they would just vanish! I guess that was illegal. I saw an Indian hawker too. The Seine looked amazing after the rains. I came back to hotel really late.

After Latin Quarter, spent some time going to just random places. Everywhere I went I found people (especially women) very helpful. One of the women I asked for directions became so friendly that she was disappointed as I cut short our conversation as I had to hurry into the metro station. For lunch I had mussels and Coq au vin. I didn’t enjoy the Coq au Vin, the mussels and the dessert saved me.

The service was really slow, cost me two hours and forced me to forgo any more formal dinners or lunch in Paris. Regardless, I did leave a large tip. The waiter wasn't there when I left. He saw me later from the window as I walked past and waved at me showing his thankfulness. As I walked through alleys, I discovered a Moroccan bakery, the pastries were beautiful and delicious.

I had time to visit the Louvre, Napoleon Gate, Champs Elysees, and Arc de Triomphe. Champs Elysees had this street fair kind of liveliness. I fell in love with the street book ended by the Place de la Concorde and Arc de Triomphe. I went to Mont Martre to visit Sacré-Cœur - the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Even there the guy running the deli was conversant in English and helpful. In the evening arrived at the modern part of Paris, the Le Defense business district. The trains matched the area - new, modern and cool. The Grande Arche,

The next morning the knee pain was almost gone. Breakfast buffet was OK. Not much variety. I loved the croissant though. Started the day with a visit to the Notre Dame. Spent a lot of time wandering around the Latin Quarter (an area frequented by the intellectuals in the past) and its surrounding areas. Loved walking through alleys lined with bookshops, eateries, cafes, clothing shops.

the 20th century version of the Arc de Triomphe was an interesting building. There was a street fair near the esplanade. One of the stalls was selling framed photographs of NYC skyscrapers. Curious, I went inside and talked to the sales associate. No, she was not American, a local student working part time, she had never been to NYC. Around midnight went back to Champs Elysees avenue one more time. Delicious crepes kept me fueled. After being on foot the whole day, my left knee could no longer bear it without letting me know. I had to walk the stairs in excruciating pain. As I walked more, it only got worse. I realized how important accessibility was. Unfortunately, a lot of the metro stations didn’t have accessibility. BTW, there's no such thing as 911 service in Paris (in London it is 999).

Next day, it was time to head back to London – this leg via air. The station attendant told me to take Bus 351. Asked a woman at the bus station to make sure I was taking the right bus - ‘Pardon, parlez vous anglais’, a few of the French sentences I found very useful. She said ‘oui’ and she was very helpful.

Told her about my preconceived notion of Parisians not speaking English even if they could. She said the new generation in general was good at English. And they were not reluctant in speaking English. I agreed, I had never faced problem communicating with people in Paris. Maybe one has to know whom to ask and how. The bus driver too spoke English. He informed me when I reached my terminal. It took an hour to reach the airport. One of the terminals was shaped like a UFO.

As I was going thru the airport security, I saw a girl who smiled at me as if she knew me. I smiled back confused. Meanwhile, I was offered disposable shoe covers after taking my shoes off. But the niceties couldn't hide the fact that airport employees were really slow and ineficient. I saw that girl again with her wide and friendly smile infused with familiarity near the boarding gate. Turns out, she was the Spanish girl who asked me to take a picture for her in the Louvre. She was visiting 3 countries in 9 days. The light on EasyJet was un-eventful. It didn't have any assigned seats. It was a 50 minute light. After landing at Luton airport I helped the Spanish girl ind the right transport. My preparation helped. Greenline bus ran every 10 minutes. It’s over an hour’s trip to Victoria station. Like me, the Chinese lady next to me on the bus was visiting Europe for the irst time. She came to visit her daughter studying in England. She too was nearing the end of her trip. We talked in length about what we liked and disliked. At Victoria station bought 2-1-4 region card for 6.30 pounds. The fair card worked both on trains and buses. Reached the Kensington Hotel in the afternoon. The hotel was in a nice residential area. Another bright, sunny cold day - I had to be thankful for the streak of ine weather so far. Found a cyber cafe next to the Shepherds Bush tube station. It was cheap, a pound an hour. I was happy to ind Tuli online - I updated her on my trip. I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant next door, it was way better than the Chinese food we get stateside.

I wanted to visit Brick Lane. To my surprise, people could not recognize the place. Not even the Indians. I thought people knew about the novel and the movie of its namesake. Instead of Brick Lane, I ended up in Whitechapel area. I had dinner at a Bangladeshi restaurant. The owner went out of his way to accept Euro (the UK didn’t give up its currency) - the restaurant didn't accept credit cards. He had to ind out the latest pound-euro conversion rate from Internet to help.

As I was leaving the restaurant, I found a Bangladeshi student who knew where brick lane was. Apparently people know the area as Banglatown. It’s a small area full of Bangladeshi owned restaurants (near the East Aldgate station). I had dessert in one of them (Bonoful Sweets). One of the guys there was a recent immigrant. For the irst time, I met a person who grew up in Bangladesh who barely spoke Bengali, he was from Sylhet.

The next day I left London for Finland. The Ryanair light to Tampere was from Stansted airport. I had to take the Stansted express train from central London to get there. On air, I struck up conversation with the young Finnish guy next to me. BTW, Finns in general all spoke good English. I found out from him the most interesting spots in Turku, where I was headed. He took me by surprise by offering me ride in his car once we landed. Even though he was not going to where I was. It would have been 4-5 hours of extra driving for him in that severe cold weather. I politely declined saying my friend was picking me up. My very close friend from AIT Shamim and another BUETite/AITian Miraj picked me up at the airport. Both of them worked for Nokia. On the way to his home, we stopped at the city center. As we walked toward the main street, we saw a bunch of guys in a tent waving at us. We stopped; they had hot dogs on a charcoal grill. We thanked them for the fresh hot dogs off the grill. We weren't out for too long,

it was so cold I had trouble using the camera. Stayed overnight at Miraj’s place. Hearing about my interest in the northern lights, Miraj showed me a book of photography with amazing pictures of the aurora borealis. One more time I felt I had to come back to this part if only to see that.

In the morning, Shamim and I started for Helsinki via train. As the conductor looked at our tickets, he said we were headed the wrong way. He was nice enough to stop the train. We were lucky that he came to us right after the train pulled away from the station and we were in the last car. We got to the capital without

incident. Zahed, another AITian picked us up. Unlike the sedentary life typical of our age, he was a marathon runner. We spent some time around the market square next to the port. We could see the Uspenski Cathedral, it's hard not to notice this imposing structure, it’s a constant ixture of the Helsinki skyline. We went near a frozen lake and a bunch of locals anxiously told us not to, probably they thought we were new and could endanger ourselves. Also visited Esplanade park. Loved the Havis Amanda sculpture. It was wonderful to meet Zahed’s wife Asma after a long time, she too was in AIT.

In the afternoon, we went to Shamim’s place in Turku. Shamim’s son was very shy, but somehow he quickly became very close to me (he drew me a robot as a parting gift). We all went to an Eid Reunion party of the local Bangladeshis. The gathering reminded us of our AIT days. It was organized mostly by the students. I can still remember one person from that gathering, Nazrul. He was so full of life one could easily tell him apart. To him, I was the chief guest of the program. He oficially introduced me to the crowd. He wanted me to deliver a speech. With the help of Shamim I dodged that bullet. Undeterred, he had special magic show, Halloween costume, role of judge in a couple quiz show just for me. Finally I had to distribute prizes among the winners. That was a irst for me. Back to his place from the Eid party, Shamim and I reminisced the good old AIT days. The next day I took the return light from Tampere. Shamim didn’t allow me to travel alone to Tampere from Turku. He came with me despite my insistence not to. This time Shamim left his cell phone in the taxi. We called the taxi company. As we were waiting for the train, the cabbie brought it back. It was hard to say bye to Shamim.

Asked shamim to make the USA trip soon. Unless he did that, I could not visit the Poconos for skiing. When I irst arrived in NJ, we had a large gathering of our BUET class mates.

Some of The same people who saw me off to AIT were present in EWR to welcome me. Shamim too came from New Foundland. Shamim & I were very excited about skiing in the Poconos as we headed that way. Too bad we had to come back from halfway for not so enthusiastic friends of ours. Then on we had this pact that some day when Shamim visited the USA we would make the trip together. Sort of became part of our bucket list now.

Back to London. To the same hotel. On the way there on bus, I was talking to a woman sitting next to me. She lived in the UK but was originally from NJ. She told me unlike the Americans, the Europeans were not used to making small talk. That made me realize, I was not my usual shy self when traveling.

Went to the British Museum. Wanted to see at least the artifacts from Bangladesh. No such luck. It was almost closing time when I got there. Instead, spent my time there to take some architectural shots.

Next thing was the Gherkin building. Asked passengers in the train, showed them a picture of the building - no, they were not sure how to get there. The attendants in the tube station were happy to help, they had to call the headquarters to ind out. Well, their direction was not correct either but I appreciated their effort. It became a now or never thing for me. Instead of relying on others, just looked at the building and tried to extrapolate its location on the tube map. It worked. By the time I got there I was greeted by extreme cold, and strong breeze. And the place looked deserted. But I was happy with my shots. Once again I found a help-ful local to ind my way back to the hotel. A student missed her bus to show me mine.

I will always fondly cherish the good times I had in Europe. I am glad my trip was not in the summer. No rush of tourists, no crowds to compete with, no thieves to worry about. Now that the US inluence on the world in general had been on the decline, I wasn't sure what to expect. To my surprise I found TV, newspapers all dedicating a large portion of time, space to news, celebrities, programs, music from the states. And saw American brands everywhere (even 5 hour energy drink was available in London). All that assured me that the USA was still the country every-one looked up to.

Place where I would always love to goAreeb Islam

My name is Areeb. I am 10 years old. I was 3 years old the irst time when I went to Bangladesh. I don’t remember my irst trip to Bangladesh but I think I enjoyed a lot. On my 2nd trip to Bangladesh, I played cricket inside and outside of my relative’s house, I went to my dad’s university BUET and his dorm Sher E Bangla Hall, Dhaka University and saw Sahid Minar, Oporajeyo Bangla, went to see Sat Gambuj Masjid. I also went to Pohela Biashakh festival and a carnival and went to a carnival where I shot a gun targeting balloon, saw snake games, and played a game where I threw a tennis ball at soda bottles. One my 3rd trip, I attended International Mother Language Day Festival and Ekushe Boi Mela. Lastly, I celebrated my sister’s birthday.

I like Bangladesh because I get to spend time with my family there, play games, and going to many places. One time, me and my cousin played cricket inside his house and he broke a plate that he was going to use to eat lunch with.

I want to see Cox’s Bazar, Liberation War Museum, Sundarban, and Lalbagh Fort.

I want to visit Bangladesh again and again and again, the place where my root would take me back, it is full of love, fun and care.

Engineering problems are under-deined, there are many solutions, good, bad and indifferent. The art

is to arrive at a good solution. This is a creative activity, involving imagination, intuition and delib-
