SSRC Survey

In order to evaluate and improve the services that the SSRC offers

our members, we have developed a survey to gather your feedback

about what is important to you and how well your experiences with

the Club have met your expectations.

We value your honest responses and

recommendations. The survey should

take you less than it takes to run a mile,

so grab a coffee, put your feet up

and take our online survey.

Your responses are completely

anonymous.

Welcome to our new members

We have had 26 new members sign up to the club this year. Join us at our next social to meet the newbies

Strider of the Year

Award We are looking for the Strider of the year for 2018. This

amazing creature is the Strider who logs the most mileage

when participating in any of the official races. It is open to

all Striders, whether you win or finish just ahead of the

sweeping bus.

The competition takes place from January to June (up to

and including Comrades). The award will be presented at

the Comrades Awards Dinner.

Apart from the usual road races, if there are any out of the

ordinary races you have completed (representing SSRC in

club kit) let Nestor know at [email protected]

for your mileage to be included.

Race Substitutions – Important Notice

We have all been there: an event sells out early and we don’t get an entry,

but all our fellow striders seem to be going and we don’t want to miss out

on the race and the amazing post-race vibe at the SSRC support tent. Then

an entry becomes available the day before and we are ready to fight to the

death for it…

A word of caution. For some small, manually timed events the pre-entries

are not linked to the name of the original entrant, usually you have to fill a

small form with the details of the runner using that number and you drop it

in a bucket just before the race. On the other hand, larger and better

organised events only accept substitutions during a strict time window and

the name of the runner is printed on the race bib.

While a last minute substitution in the former case is perfectly legal,

running with a number assigned to a different runner is a serious

contravention of ASA rules that carries harsh consequences. The reason for

it is that ASA interprets that situation as an attempt to fraudulently qualify

for big races like OMTOM and Comrades.

We cannot provide specific instructions for each race, so please use

common sense. When you are offered an entry first check that it is not

assigned to another runner, and then make sure it is the correct type of

entry (i.e. don’t use a discounted grand master entry if you are not one). In

case of doubt, don’t risk it.

Néstor Espinoza - Club Captain

Rand Athletic Club (RAC) In Memorium - Dorothy ‘Dot’ Barker

It was with deep sadness that Sunninghill Striders learnt of the

passing of Dorothy Barker, affectionately known as ‘Dot’, who was

the RAC club secretary for about 30 years. There so many

wonderful things we could mention about Dot, here are just a few.

All Dot’s work for RAC was voluntary. On Tuesday nights she would

often start the time trials, man the tog bags and keys, then perform

administration functions sometimes leaving late at night,

especially when RAC hosted runs and issued license renewals.

She would attend most of the Sunday Gauteng races. After

collecting runners who had no transport, early in the morning, she

would set up the umbrellas and ensure that the kit bags and car

keys were secure. She would strategically place RAC’s umbrella so

she could cheer every RAC runner by name as they finished. After

the run, she would pack up and then drop off the runners at their

homes, sometimes getting home late in the afternoon. Dot also assisted in excess of 20 Comrades

Marathons and for that she deserves her ‘double green’ and the 1st placed ladies’ Gold medal!

She only had two vices that I know of, the first

one was that she loved her cigarettes and

always took delight when a maverick running

smoker would “bum a smoke” from her. The

other was her love of coffee.

As a teetotaler she could spot a hangover from

a mile away and at races would say to the sorry

looking runner in her American accent with a

big smile on her face, “Hey, Susan would you

like some a Cwaffee?”

Dot sadly died of cancer in the USA on Sunday,

14th January 2018.

On behalf of the Sunninghill Striders we convey

our heartfelt condolences to her family and

friends at RAC.

Update from Patagonia Mike Sewell and Roger Cameron did it! They completed their journey, ending in Villa O'Higgins on 30 December 2017!

From Mike Sewell’s Facebook post on his Project Patagonia page:

“The last stretch was my favourite. The least travelled. The most wild. The moodiest weather. I really felt like we were exploring. Seeing things only seen by few. And a last set of challenges. One last mountain pass. One last bash of adverse weather. Tiring legs. But each day still a new adventure

It all finished in a town of only 600 people – at the end of the road. No big fanfare but wonderful to be met by Phillipa and her cousin Andre and then share a beer with our new friends and explorers who had gathered in Villa O’Higgins to celebrate the start of another exciting year.

Looking back on the expedition, what strikes me most is just how much there can be to life. The amazing places to explore and the inspiring people to meet. The variety of stories, background and plans. Life truly is what you make of it – and the opportunities and experiences are endless.

Project Patagonia was “born out of a passion to escape the familiar and explore the world – while challenging the body and mind to new limits and beyond”. While much of that was achieved – there is still so much to explore. And limits are definitely not reached, but instead only pushed out.”

And now….

Mike is doing a post expedition cross over to Argentina

Roger is enjoying time in the Seychelles

1,208km total distance

Over 6 weeks

33 running days

Average of 36.6km per day

We look forward to

welcoming you boys back to

share a beer and hear all

about your adventures!
