2017 IN REVIEW23 years of helping families and individuals fleeing domestic violence by connecting them to safe, affordable housing and services

Adults and children in seven buildings were offered a wide

range of on-site services including safety planning, domestic violence counseling, case management, budgeting, vocational counseling and referrals, parenting support, and health, education and legal referrals. During the past year, we began implementation of a trauma-informed care approach to service provision throughout the program; and hired a Children’s and Family Services Coordinator to conduct assessments and counseling for children who have been impacted by violence.

Units of new affordable housing in two buildings in the Bronx are in

our development pipeline. We closed on one building in June 2017 that will have 42 units for low-income households with 23 units set aside for homeless domestic violence survivors. A second affordable housing project that will have 62 affordable units for low-income households, with 37 units set aside for victims of domestic violence, is in pre-development.

Unique visitors to our online Housing

Resource Center which continues to be the “go to” resource for both advocates and domestic violence survivors. The Housing Resource Center provides accurate and up-to-date information on subsidies and rental assistance programs; advice on conducting a successful housing search and overcoming common housing challenges; and referrals and linkages to other useful resources.

Apartments in our four oldest buildings are undergoing renovations with tenants

remaining in place. Building and apartment upgrades will enable us to preserve these buildings as affordable housing for the long term.

of individuals in New York City’s shelter system are families with children, many of whom stay in the shelter system for over a year. New Destiny, Citizens’ Committee for Children

and Enterprise Community Partners convened over 40 stakeholders to call attention to the needs of homeless children and their families, ensure the well-being of families during the time they are living in shelter, and develop and advance recommendations to prevent and end family homelessness. At a June 2017 summit, a report with recommendations to address family homelessness was issued. The full report, Prioritizing Homeless Children and Their Families, can be accessed at www.newdestinyhousing.org.

Supporters and colleagues joined New Destiny at our annual

benefit, to celebrate our accomplishments and our honorees— RuthAnne Visnauskas, Commissioner/CEO of New York State Homes and Community Renewal, and Melissa Jeltsen, Senior Reporter at The Huffington Post.
