A Heartfelt Welcome

Dear students of the 2017 ICSB Academy: It is with great delight that the organizing committees of the 3rd Academy and the 62nd World Conference of the International Council for Small Business welcome you to Buenos Aires, Argentina. We encourage you make full use of this opportunity to learn from and interact with people from around the world. Here you are going to meet:

• One hundred students from around the world seeking to make a positive and sustainable impact on society. • Active entrepreneurs who will share with you their successes and failures. • Renowned researchers and lecturers of entrepreneurship who will teach you strategy and techniques. • Administrators and government officials from around the world who promote entrepreneurship as a path to regional

prosperity. The Academy provides you with many opportunities to interact with the above. You will participate in courses, work in startup teams, give elevator pitches to entrepreneurs and officials, visit startup companies, witness a real Shark Tank (Slush) and defend your business concept to the entire Academy. Step outside your comfort zone, be an active participant, and expand your professional network across continents! - Cesar Bandera, 2017 ICSB Academy Director

2017 Cohort Represents 12 countries:

Afghanistan Argentina Brazil Canada China Finland France Germany Italy Korea Lebanon USA

Dear faculty and staff of the 2017 ICSB Academy: Thank you for your efforts in making this ICSB Academy a success. If you are a returning Global Faculty, thank you again for your continued participation. A frequent comment received from students in previous Academies has been the accessibility of the subject matter experts, and for this we can thank only you. This year we have added more opportunities for students to interact with you and among themselves. Before the Academy starts on June 26, students will have formed teams and each team will have drafted a business model canvas of its startup concept, which is related to one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. While these concepts may change during the week, they will nevertheless provide students with a context for your lectures and activities. We hope this yields deeper learning. I encourage you to attend the students’ business model canvas presentations on the morning of the 26th, have lunch with the students, help the students prepare their pitches on Wednesday afternoon, and/or be a judge in the final pitch competition on Friday (the latter is at the same venue as the conference). If you are a practicing entrepreneur willing to confess some real-life disasters, you are welcome to participate in the “Learn from Mistakes” panel on Monday at 5pm. - Cesar Bandera, 2017 ICSB Academy Director

The Curriculum (Before You Arrive)

We are going straight to work (and fun). PIOR to Monday, June 26, each student must

1. Introduce herself/himself in the introduction sheet http://bit.ly/2srsGY8 2. Either form or join a team in the team roster http://bit.ly/2sV8zDn . A team must have five members, no more than

three from the same university. We want you to collaborate with new people! 3. Enroll in the team’s online forum. Each team has its own forum where you can chat, post comments, and upload

files with any web browser. The link to your forum is provided in the above team roster form.

Now is when things get serious.

4. Each team must formulate a business idea that addresses a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/?menu=1300) and is financially viable. This is the business idea the team will present at the Academy (don’t worry – you can always revise it). Describe this business idea using a business model canvas, which is a single PowerPoint slide. A pre-formatted slide and instructions are provided for you at http://bit.ly/2tPAEIr .

5. Get ready to present your business model canvas slide to the Academy on Monday morning, January 26.

The Curriculum (Week of June 25)

Each team presents its business model canvas on Monday June 26. Through activities, lectures, and breakouts, each team will refine the business concept, and pivot if necessary. On the evening of Wednesday June 28, each team will have the opportunity to present their business concept to attendees at the reception of the 62nd World Conference of the ICSB http://icsb2017.org. You will give real elevator pitches, and the attendees will vote on your concept and delivery. The top teams will present to judges at noon on Saturday July 1.
